This is a really wonderful dance studio. I appreciate the seriousness with which they teach the students. I can't speak about other styles, but the modern teachers are wonderful. The administration is very hard to get ahold of and things like getting parking pass, or replacing your lanyard if it's lost, are very challenging. But the teaching was wonderful. read more

My son attended their community piano school for two semesters. The faculty was great, and we were looking forward to spending more time with Colburn. However, their administration -- and the vice dean specifically -- are among the most unpleasant, entitled, and inflexible people I've ever dealt with. From making basic arithmetic mistakes to having the audacity to send multiple emails rescinding a discount they themselves offered, every interaction with them was worse than the last. While it's a great school, let's be honest: none of their alumni are truly world-class performers. Not that it would justify their behavior, but I'd be more inclined to put up with their administrative nonsense if their results matched their cockiness -- they don't. I encourage parents to support smaller community schools and independent individual teachers who aren't governed by entitled, shortsighted administration. read more

After a somewhat lengthy wait in the lobby before seating in Zipper Hall, considered one of the best venues for chamber music, we enjoyed a stunning night of flute and harpsichord/piano music. Our first concert here at the acclaimed Colburn School. Highly recommended for anyone with even the slightest interest in classical music. We both are longtime fans, as we are with many genres of good music. As a matter of fact, our next concert here will be coming up later this week. read more

Hmmm. Not sure how this prestigiously Private Music School in DTLA's 'The Music Center,' got itself down to 3.5 stars during the Pandemic. My friends and I visited this Concert venue for an all Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart program here years ago. Colburn School offers a smaller recital hall as compared to Walt Disney Concert Hall, so it's mostly used for Chamber Music groups to perform. I finally revisited them today for this event, 'DTLA's 23 Things to do in 2023,' Passport/Scavenger Hunt event. When I saw the event listing off Yelp Events, they looked manageable. So far, I've earned 400 points/2000. But I get the whole month to complete it: I got the feeling it's ASAP though. I had a blast browsing the paintings and walking around classroom hallways here today and it's surroundings. I got to grab a brochure here, So will share that in a tad bit! Will be back visiting soon in DTLA's 'The Music Center.' It was free admission just to visit! They are currently offering free concerts: I'll post a flyer pic shortly. read more

Update: after attending the summer program, we can see now why the poor communication. These camps are not meant to inspire and provide extended instruction for upcoming artists, they are a time filler and money generating mechanism. Staff was late most days, there was more talking than learning, and overall to have the 'Colburn' on these camps disgraces the name. Priory review: So far communication from the school has been abysmal. No one returns emails or calls, and it seems that no one knows what's going on and they're always "behind." The only communication we've had is to ask for donations, payments, or sell programs. And when we bought what they're selling, they don't even bother to reply. Not a good start on what's supposed to be a world-class educational opportunity. read more

I understand Colburn in Los Angeles, CA is one of the most competitive and prestigious music schools in the United States. The campus is beautiful, modern and new looking. If you are looking for a fantastic place to start dancing seriously as an adult, this is the place to go. Several weeks ago I started the Adult Beginner's Ballet class, and I am so happy with it so far. It's offered on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The teacher is fantastic, and the classes are always the perfect size (about 7 people). This class, unlike a lot of the adult classes I have been to, is nice in that it progresses. If you go one week, and then return the next week, you will build off of what you had learned the previous week. In other words, the class is designed not only for you to get in shape, but also so that you can legitimately improve on your techniques and learn new things if you attend the class regularly. The adult hip hop class on Thursdays is also fun, and is really good about teaching you different techniques and styles. There are fewer regulars to the class though, so the dynamic of the group definitely affects how much fun the class is that week. One word of warning, if you are planning on dropping into a class, you still have to get to the studio before 6pm in order to buy a dance card. The office is only open till 6, even if the class is at 7:30! That is the only inconvenience . . . If you are planning on taking more than one class there, ask for a decal for your car, and you can park in the Coulburn's lot whenever you would like for free. Highly recommend everyone to attend the Dilijian Chamber Music Concert Series. It is amazing. They bring so many talented people from all around the world. For the final concert of the 11th season Sergei Babayan played his magic on the piano and left us all in awe. There is a cafe right outside of the hall, with amazing food. Love what Colburn has to offer! Great classes for kids. My children use to spend all day Saturday taking several classes and hanging out with their new friends. Tap and ballet for my daughter and private music lessons and jazz band for my son. Unfortunately, I've noticed that some of the teachers with seniority tend to stay at Colburn regardless of their level of professionalism and/or appropriateness. The jazz band teacher, for example, would often yell and use profanity when he became frustrated with his young band students. Even after several parent complaints over the years, the teacher remains. There are solid and devoted teachers at Colburn, but our family has left Colburn as the jazz program was a major attraction for us. It is unfortunate that a teacher's longevity at Colburn far outweighs the well-being of the Colburn students. read more

Wow! We stumbled upon this school and decided to give it a try for my daughter's dance instruction. We couldnt have stumbled upon a more comprehensive, professional, and well managed school. She just completed their Tap Intensive after a couple of years off and it turned out to be just what she needed to get back into it. The teacher was interested and challenging. This review is for the Colburn School Suzuki String Program. It is written in a letter they gave us that this program is very popular and so they accept students based on lottery. Yet they have their 5 yr old applicants partake in an assessment meeting where the teachers judge these 5 yr olds on their potential to be great violinists. Not only is the admission guidelines misleading, but it goes against the Suzuki philosophy that all children, without prejudice, can be educated to have talent when given the opportunity to develop with love and patience. If there are not enough teachers to accept all children, then they should be true to themselves and fair to the children and follow their admission guidelines of accepting by lottery. read more

This is a review of the Adult Intermediate & Advanced Ballet classes offered for dancers over 13 yrs old through The Trudl Zipper Dance Institute at The Colburn School. I used to take ballet as a little girl and stopped training in my early twenties. Now in my thirties, I was looking for a ballet class that was reminiscent of the professional instruction I was used growing up. The Colburn School was a perfect fit! I love dancing here! The facility is quiet, clean, safe and professional. Parking is free! (Yes, in downtown?, I know!) This is the only place in LA were you can take a ballet class with a LIVE pianist for under $11 a class (when you purchase a 20 class dance card)! Ballet instructors: Hesen Weiren and Lucy Record are top-notch. I take twice a week and have the pleasure of learning from them both. Classes are classically structured and tailored towards dancers from all levels. They also offer Adult Beginning Ballet, Adult Intermediate Ballet. You can also use your dance card towards Pilates Mat, Anusara-Inspired Yoga and Adult Contemporary Jazz Classes, too. Come on out and check it out, you won't regret it! read more

My daughter takes ballet here 3 days a week and LOVES IT. She has been taking classes here at Colburn since she was 7 and a Level 1 and is now 11 and a level 4 on pointe. The teachers are amazing. The atmosphere is great and it's a massive overall building with lots of amazing programs. Also the concerts are outstanding and Zipper Hall is BREATHTAKING. We love this place read more

Attended the performance of Scheherazade by the Colburn Orchestra at the Ambassador Auditorium with my meetup group http://www.meetup.com/losangelesfreeconcerts/. The guest conductor Yehuda Gilad was excellent. His passion for the music was evident, and the musicians really responded to him. The Conservatory of Music is essentially a performing arts college, but these musicians did not play like college kids. They are the LA & NY Phil members of tomorrow. The school originated at USC, but don't hold that against them. Scheherazade really demonstrates what an orchestra can do. It has numerous solo parts to show off individual skills. The concertmaster Nigel Artmstrong was superb. My friend Koly quipped that he was making love to the violyn. I agreed and added he didn't use a condom. Their concerts are free: one of the best deals in town. Combine that with the majesty of the Ambassador Auditorium and you have a special, yet inexpensive, night out. The Orchestra received an extended standing ovation: deservedly so. read more
