Hmmm. Not sure how this prestigiously Private Music School in DTLA's 'The Music Center,' got itself down to 3.5 stars during the Pandemic. My friends and I visited this Concert venue for an all Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart program here years ago. Colburn School offers a smaller recital hall as compared to Walt Disney Concert Hall, so it's mostly used for Chamber Music groups to perform. I finally revisited them today for this event, 'DTLA's 23 Things to do in 2023,' Passport/Scavenger Hunt event. When I saw the event listing off Yelp Events, they looked manageable. So far, I've earned 400 points/2000. But I get the whole month to complete it: I got the feeling it's ASAP though. I had a blast browsing the paintings and walking around classroom hallways here today and it's surroundings. I got to grab a brochure here, So will share that in a tad bit! Will be back visiting soon in DTLA's 'The Music Center.' It was free admission just to visit! They are currently offering free concerts: I'll post a flyer pic shortly.

    Lovely performance!

If you want your child to be the next Yo-Yo Ma or Midori, this is the place to send them. The Colburn School provides music, dance and drama training from the introductory to the advanced level to students from preschool to adult. The faculty is top notch and among the best on the West Coast. The Colburn School presents a full season of admission-free performances of music, dance, mime and drama. (This is not a review of their facilities such as Zipper Hall or Mayman Hall.)

Movies Pogossian, Varty Manouelian, Carrie Dennis, Clive agree smith and Sergie Babayan. AMAZING!

I was a bit hesitant to join as I felt the full series was a big commitment. Quickly after I joined, I ended up looking forward to being in class every week. Now I couldn't be happier that I went for it, and thankful for my friend suggesting it! Jasmine was the main instructor. She guided us with such passion and expertise, occasionally supported by Nicole. Together, they created an environment where I felt encouraged and challenged at all times. You can really see not only how much knowledge and skill they have, but also how much love they pour into what they do. This course has done wonders for my confidence on the dance floor. When I first started, I was nervous about dancing at socials (and clueless on how to do so), but by the end of the program, I have been able to dance through full songs without fear and very little hesitation. There's so much to learn still, but woah! This is a strong beginning. Plus, Dancer University provides a 2 hour space for all students from different courses/all levels to get together and practice on the weekend. It was SO helpful to build up confidence while dancing at socials was still too intimidating. Their logistics team is great too and will help accommodate you for a different class, if anything comes up and you can't make it to your usual class. That was a huge plus! Only thing I didn't like.. was I didn't want the series to end! Which means DU will continue to see more of me. Looking forward to it! Thank you all for an incredible experience learning and dancing with you. I loved every second of it!

They're always ready to help and guide you if something doesn't work out. They are always clean, cozy, well-ventilated, equipped with air conditioning, and have large mirrors, which is very important for dance practice. The receptionist is also very pleasant, positive, and friendly. I was absolutely delighted with my experience at this studio and would happily recommend it to my friends who love dancing.

Natalie takes the time to lay a solid foundation with proper technique and movement. Individual attention is given to each student with a focus on their unique body type, strength, and abilities. Natalie's knowledge about dance, anatomy, movement, musculature and other related areas are impressive. She leverages all of these to ensure that dancers are in proper alignment so they don't hurt themselves. She offers tenderness and grace in her instruction and builds rapport with each ballerina. She provides equitable treatment of each student, regardless of whether or not they aspire to be a professional ballerina. She makes sure you get the moves while also keeping the environment supportive, comfortable, and celebratory. I love when she gets so excited that she literally starts screaming because someone in class is going off. She celebrates people constantly, by name or even just noticing something they're rocking like, "Yes, GREEN JUMPSUIT!" Being the only guy in the class, I've never once felt isolated, judged, or uncomfortable about assumptions people might make about me. I've only ever felt celebrated. It was refreshing not having to navigate that in a public place. She encourages fluidity in whatever way feels right for you, whether it's super masc, super feminine, or somewhere in between. Her focus is helping you connect to your artistic dance spirit, and that's when you know you're doing it right. She also celebrates neurodiversity and really focuses on what the strengths are within that, while also helping people navigate certain challenges. Karma's class is more than just learning choreography. Watching her dance is witnessing powerful, raw, and inspiring artistry. When she demos, it honestly feels like a mini performance during class. Then when she dances with us right after, you feel like this epic backup dancer, and it inspires new moves and articulations within you. There's also a strong sense of community in Karma's class. She's built a culture where you not only bring self-love to the class, but appreciation and love for the people dancing alongside you. Someone might be doing a twerk, an offbeat wild move on their chair, or some epic crawl across the floor, and the whole class erupts with roaring encouragement. Karma encourages asking questions about the dance moves and routines. She absolutely loves them. But remember, she's an A-type personality, so be sure to raise your hand. ; ] She's also a motivational instructor because she's real. She doesn't say generic things. Sometimes she shares philosophies or lessons that helped her in life, and I've caught myself thinking, "How is this level of Impacting dialogue happening in a chair dance class?" It's a one-of-a-kind experience that involves a chair, saucy moves, and surprising moments of human-centered community, full of loving people hosted by the radiant Karma!

She loved it so much, we wished it was more than once a week and didn't stop for summer break. Something I would like to see more of is the teaching of short dance routines after all of the typical exercises they do. One thing that many of the parents were dissatisfied with was how often there was a substitute teacher, and the general lack of communication there was regarding class schedules and offerings from the office. I hope this review will help you in deciding which program to put your child in, and will provide the school some insite into our experience.
