I highly recommend this company! My family and I couldn't stand the mission style staircase. After meeting with different contractors I felt confident that I could get what I wanted at a fair price from Coffman Stairworks. Glenn came with a lot of good suggestions and clearly knew what he was talking about. We changed the drywall look to a much more open and inviting handrail and baluster staircase. I absolutely LOVE it! The foreman Steve is truly an incredible craftsman and very hardworking. Matt was great and did an excellent job laying the stairs down...not even the slightest squeak! These guys know their business and get it done. A word to the wise....this company is a carpentry company, they do not stain the stairs at all. So it is up to you to find someone to stain your stairs if that is the look you are going for. I was pretty surprised at how expensive painting companies can be. The painting/staining of everything was about 1/3 the price I spent on the stair construction. You may also want to have someone who does good drywall repair on hand. As you can see in the pictures there was some massive changes made. The Coffman guys focused on all things woodwork but I needed someone to come in and do some patching and smoothing. You really can't go wrong hiring these guys, they are super skilled carpenters! read more

Pam and Glen was very professional in terms of communication and really understood my concerns as a first time home buyer. He started the project exactly on time and finished as promised. Glen and Steve started the job two days later than agreed per contract.  Refused to stain the wood even though the contract stated that a stained handrail would be provided. The staining was also discussed during the initial estimate verbally. And Glen was genuinely shocked that I asked for 5% off the contract price after the job. Because they started the job two days late, my painters were prevented from finishing their jobs in time. Coffman did stay past 5pm to finish the job in one day which led to a hurried exit and wood shavings left all around the stairs. On a positive note, Glen is very knowledgeable and clearly is a stair and handrail expert. But as a company, customer service is a work in progress. Coffman believes that pricing is non negotiable while start dates and other contract terms in favor of the company are negotiable. Not recommended. read more

A top-notch experience! I got bids from four different companies who are experienced in doing cable railings for stairs. Coffman Stair Works's price wasn't the cheapest but it was very reasonably price. Our townhome was built in the 1970's and so the stairway is quite narrow. As such, we could not use wood posts since the minimum wood post size would have to be 4" x 6" which would make the stairway feel too narrow, so we had to go with something sturdier like stainless stain newel posts that won't take much space. The communication from start to finish went very well and I can tell during the onsite visit that he was rather knowledgable about the latest stair codes, so I felt that I could trust him. He came across very friendly and professional. The fact that his stair company is licensed, insured, and bonded and does not subcontract the work was also a major plus for us. From their company website, they do all types of stair designs--from the classic look to the modern, sleek types. This was not an easy job as the narrow stairways have 29 steps in all, but Glen and I discussed where to position the posts and handrails and he went over the entire process. Looking back, I'm glad discussed and marked where to drill and decided on the heights of the railings as it prevented any potential miscommunication about the appearance of the railings and its placement, height, etc. The stainless steel parts ordered turned out to be very sleek and modern looking (see pics). Glen did a meticulous job of measuring, making the right cuts and drilling (there were a lot of holes to drill), tensioning the cables. Originally I had considered doing DIY stair railings, but looking back I'm glad I didn't, since the amount of time it took to drill holes and needing special tools for handling stainless material, it would not have been worth it. In total, the job took around 35-40 man hours to complete. Glen really goes the extra mile for his customers. I'm a very picky person especially when it comes to design considerations. On what was supposed to be the last day, I asked him during the final walkthrough if he could slide over part of the new balcony. Even though it would mean an additional 3-4 hours and he'd have to make another trip (two hours round-trip), he did not hesitate in agreeing to do so because at the end, he wanted me to be happy with the stairs. The workmanship is top notch, I could not be any happier with how my new cable stair railings turned out! read more

I called several stair companies and Glen and Pamela gave me the most reasonable price without compromising on the quality of the product.  I appreciate how prompt they were at giving me a quote and their contract was very clear.  It only took them two days to give me new stair railings for my four story home!  They worked very efficiently because I could tell they had pre-planned the workload by properly measuring everything and that their experience assured me my railings would be safe for my kids.  I highly recommend them base on quality, safety, and professionalism. read more

Glen is a master craftsman, we couldn't be happier with our wood to iron baluster replacement. He was able to save our existing original railing/ascending volute, and upgraded it's fastening to the walls. He has artistic skill in understanding the patterns to achieve the fresh updated look we were going for. His pricing was very reasonable, he runs things by the book, contract was in order, and his work was done cleanly. Glen did an incredible job on our stair railing, which were not child safe and not built to code. The previous owners decided to remedy this situation by screwing ugly plastic panels onto the railing which we'd been living with for years. When we finally decided to take on this project, we met with carpenters and stair companies, but after talking to Pamela who was so nice and reliable on the phone and after meeting Glen, it was evident that Coffman was by far the most professional and had a clear plan to tackle the job. They came in and matched the existing railing and moved some of it up so that it was safe. They rebuilt other parts so they matched perfectly. I can't overstate how perfectly they matched the original design. They found wood that matched ours and referred us to a staining specialist to finish the job off. The stairs and railing are such a prominent architectural feature of our indoor space, it had to be done correctly. I can't recommend Glen enough. He and his team really know what they're doing and they are also trustworthy which is HUGE. Given the level of intricate detail involved, had we gone with any of the others that said it was "no problem" we would have been in big trouble. read more

Glen and Pam were a big help when we redid our railing last month. We're DIY-ers, but Glen came by, measured everything, Pam ordered what we needed, and had the parts shipped. Very friendly, accomodating, and great to work with. After a lot of work on our end, it looks great! I wish we would have hired Glen to do the WHOLE THING because man, we had no idea what we were getting into. Framing, drywall, paint, molding, trim, all that is easy - railings need a professional and next time we'll hire Glen and Pam to do the whole thing. Lesson learned! read more

I have to say I expected more. Glen is very nice, but the lack of follow through and customer service is concerning. In addition, quality control is missing. I hired him to install iron balusters on my wooden curved staircase and when he finished, he messed up the pattern on one side and didn't realize it. I made him aware and he came back and corrected it, but I was a little surprised. In addition, I have small children and several (7) balusters were loose. One came off in my nephews hand; Thank God it was near the bottom of the staircase. Glen did come out and repair them, but this went on for a few weeks. I thought I would give him another chance so I referred my parents to him a month ago and its been weeks and all they get are delays and excuses for why no bid was given. Not the right way to do business. read more

We had our home totally renovated and used over a dozen different trades and a multitude of contractors. We didn't have a good experience with almost all of them unfortunately. Coffman Stair Works was a definite rare exception. We had them install a new stair rail, starting step and second story tread. Glen is super friendly and easy to work with. The craftsman who actually did our work was Steve and he was awesome too. There were lots of design decisions that needed to be made on the spot and Steve was great with suggestions and always did what we wanted with precision. They used stair parts from LJ Smith but Steve customized the newel posts for us. He's a master finish carpenter and did a lot of custom woodwork to give us the exact designs we wanted. We're super happy with the stairs and the work Coffman did. It came out beautifully and really elevated the prestige of our home to a new level. I highly recommend them. They genuinely care about pleasing the customer and will go to great lengths to ensure you're happy. read more

This is a belated review. Coffman Stair Works installed a railing and balustrade for us in 2013. We had an ornate railing and wanted it replaced with something contemporary to match our mid century modern interior in a newer 2000s home. Glen worked with us to arrive at a design that exactly matched our taste, giving us a nice range of materials and hardware options to select from, and then he built and installed a system that was nicer than we had anticipated with steel rods, blonde wood rail and simple oak newel posts, and exactly the right hardware. Unlike another posting here, our experience was that he worked closely with us to match the stain we wanted and the existing wood floor color. We could not have been more pleased. He was also attentive to how we use our stairs and our stated knee issues: He suggested an additional rail in an area of the stairwell that is framed by walls on both sides, and this extra railing is something we have greatly appreciated from day one. It is designed well and looks very well integrated with the whole moderne design. Not a week goes by that we don't comment how much we appreciate the foresight of that suggestion and the overall design of the whole system Glen built. He was on time, professional, and is a very nice person to deal with as well as a knowledgable woodworker. read more
