They have friendly and presentable staff who are more than happy to chat to you about the local area, as long as they aren't too busy.

The Lakeside Bistro is a popular place and as it is not huge in size, it's a good idea to book, even during the week. The staff are warm and friendly, which adds to its popularity, some people have a meal here every weekend! The menu has expanded of late for Sunday lunches, offering other dishes, as well as the always popular roast dinners; with the Venison Pie being my particular favourite. Most of the dinners come in two portion sizes too, standard and for slightly less money, a portion with diners with a smaller appetite. The food won't break through any culinary boundaries for inventiveness, but it is tasty straightforward food at a reasonable price.

A paid car park (£1 an hour or £3 for all day) forms the start of most of the walks or cycle tracks. There are forest paths with short and long loops, as well as a circular 1.2 mile walk through open countryside, passed the many planted trees and at the apex, a lake frequented by many birds, including some very noisy Canada geese! A very pleasant early morning walk with the autumn dew, still on the trees. Hicks Lodge becomes much busier later, especially with cyclists. Hicks Lodge also has a rustic looking adventure playground for the children and an expansive bicycle hire area. This is associated with a busy cafe, with indoor and outdoor seating. All the cakes are homemade, having tried the Millionaires Shortbread and scones, I can heartily recommend them. As I can with the coffee, strong and flavoursome. This is one of our favourite places, as we strive to get a little fitter!

First stop was Matlock - cute little village, powerful river flowing though town, nice views all around. We wanted to have lunch but hadn't really seen anything and so we decided to head to Bakewell (about 20 minutes drive) when I noticed a classy, inviting, purple sign by the road "The Orangery". We quickly turned around and are so glad that we did! We had a really GREAT lunch and have already booked again for Christmas Eve when our daughter and new husband visit. It may sound odd but it used to be part of a very prestigious school for over a century - the most famous "Old Girl" was Richmal Crompton who wrote all the "William" books that I devoured as a kid. Now the whole complex is basically a old peoples home (Man are they lucky!!). So the lunchgoers were, on average, grey haired (but I am going that way too) - but it was fairly quiet in terms of lunchgoers and music (just the right volume - Christmas songs, Wham and many many more of the favorites. The restaurant drips class, the bistro also (full bar). A wide selection of offerings _ I seriously wanted the prawn curry but got lured into a Christmas special. I was introduced to Black Pudding, an acquired taste for even the English- pigs blood and intestines mashed into a hockey puck. I have nothing to compare it to but a taste of it was good for me. It was crispy, soft like pudding and a bit sweet. I opted for the tuna panini which was terrific. I read it came with chips which I figured were fries but got actual potato chips which was fine I guess. Michael said his All Day Breakfast was spot on except for the sausage which he described as cheap or watery. The other lads said there's were fine and devoured it spite being hung over. Before breakfast I asked to walk past the gates to witness the sprawling fields. I was welcomed with a bit of apprehension and took a few photos as you may see. Apparently no one asks to go back into the farm. I breathed in the cool air and appreciated the beauty of the English horizon. I was met by the owner, Bill Williams, in a tractor who stopped me to have a bit of a chat. He is a funny man when he said the view was "alright" and there wasn't much to see. I learned the farm was 400 acres and how he had a kick travelling the California coast line several years ago. When I return to Chester I will be sure to come back and eat here and say hello.

Breakfast Review:…read more Its a wonderful venue - but its not open on a Monday (as I found out to my cost, when I cycled there on a Monday!). Its Packington farm, where the fields are full of the free range pigs, where the incredible sausages come from. The bacon is pretty good too. You eat in a modern cafe on the farm that has the cafe at one end and the farm shop at the other. Be warned the farm shop will take all the money from your wallet - there is some incredible produce to buy. Breakfast was good but small for the price (£7.25). It has to be with sausages that are probably the best I have eaten. Bacon was pretty impressive too. The only things that left this breakfast down, was meager amount served up and the toast. At a farm shop, I expect really good bread and that bread to make really good toast. What we got here was supermarket sliced break. I think they have really let themselves down. Had they got the toast right and slapped another sausage and slice of bacon on it, could have been a contender for one of the Midlands best. One final thing: they don't serve baked beans with the breakfast. Weird?
