Food was terrific , wait staff was fun and they played the best "old school" rap mix I've ever heard in a Resturant.

Great food. It was my first time trying Sri Lankan food and I was not disappointed. A lot of the dishes can be on the spicy side.

I stopped by for lunch around 2pm on a Saturday -- the place was still packed, but I was able to…read moresnag a cosy seat at the window since I was dining by myself. In a related and very lovely gesture, the server brought me a complimentary mutton roll (with chilli ketchup) and said they usually send something on the house for solo diners :) The roll was delicious -- savoury mutton without a strong game-y flavour that went really nicely with the mildly spicy ketchup. I decided to have an order of the Lankan chicken kari paired with a hopper. I did not know what a hopper was before then (let alone seen one), so it was an interesting surprise when I was served this unevenly thick, bowl-shaped rice pancake. Fortunately, I did not go wrong with this choice, as the hopper was so delicious. The light rice-based flavour of the hopper paired so nicely with the rich, slightly spicy curry and the tender and savoury chicken, and I really liked the textural variety of the hopper itself (thicker, spongier base and thinner, crispier sides). The ratio of hopper to curry was not quite right, though, so I ended up ordering another roti to enjoy the remaining half of my curry and chicken. The roti was really delicious -- fluffy on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside -- and similarly paired super well in carrying the curry flavour. All in all, price point was pretty solid for the quality and amount of food. I thought the hopper was pricier than expected, but conversely the curry was less so -- so overall it all seemed quite reasonable. I would love the chance to come visit again and try more of their deliciously fragrant curry options next time.

The server was a great help in guiding us through and helping us to order a good sample of items. The food was brought out a good pace. We had ti.e to eat each course and never felt overwhelmed. The food was delicious. There was no item we did not like. The items we ordered offered a balance of heat and cool.

Ambience is as good as it can get considering that it's on a high street. Sparkling clean and service with a smile. Why not give us a larger table in your completely empty restaurant? I like that they give your own bottle of water. The chicken kothu was really good. Street food from the eastern part of the island if I read it correctly. Chopped up roti, chicken, egg, onions and more. Tastes better than it sounds. They need to serve this dish in a larger bowl as it falls out when taking food out. The potato curry tastes good, but it's supposed to be in a coconut curry sauce. Which however was not very creamy and more on the watery side. As if someone had diluted the coconut with water and oil. Also a rather small curry portion. Also tried the puttu, which was three flour rolls, brown and white, good for pouring curry or Sambar over. The music makes for a not so very intimate and relaxing dining experience. Fast beat and loud like a Sri Lankan rave party, although quite entertaining music. They have a seafood Thali for £15 for those willing to splurge at lunch.

The Coconut Tree - A variety of vegan bites! Including Kaju Maluma, Sri-Tato, Chickpeas, Hot Battered Mushrooms, and Kale & Cabbage Sambol.

We decided to be adventurous on our first night in Bath and went for Sri Lankan food. We've had Sri…read moreLankan food before, but this menu had some fun new dishes to try. The vibe was casual, and we got seated right away. Since the portions looked like tapas, we went all out and ordered a bunch of stuff. Here's the breakdown: * Hopper: This seems to be the dish to try. It's made with a fermented batter and coconut milk, served with chutneys. The caramelized onion chutney was good. Solid 4 stars from me. Hubby tried the egg hopper (same thing, but with an egg on top). * Cheesy Colombo: Fried cheese in a saucy mix--it's giving chili paneer vibes, and I was here for it. Another 4 stars. * Kaju Maluwa: Cashews and peas in a coconut curry. Mild, creamy, and tasty! * Sri-tato: Spiced potatoes with onions and masalas. Pretty flavorful--3.5 stars. * Kos Mallun: Jackfruit with chilies, garlic, and onions. It was spicy but not my fave. I'll give it a 3. * Vegetarian Kotthu: Surprise! It has eggs, which they didn't mention on the menu. I didn't eat it, but hubby gave it a 3.5. (Pro tip: If you want vegan kotthu, ask for it specifically!) * Parottha: So good and perfect for scooping up all the curries. For drinks, hubby had the Sriki-tiki, which he thought was just okay. I went for a virgin piña colada, and it hit the spot. The service was decent, but the lighting? So dark. I get that they were going for a moody vibe, but we could barely read the menu or see what we were eating! Better lighting would've made the experience so much better. Overall, it was a fun night of trying new flavors!

Now that I've visited a handful of times, here are my favorites... COCKTAILS 1. Beach Boy (coconut rum and pineapple flavours "exuding warm sunset vibes; a Sri Lankan East Coast surfers fave") - it's refreshing and tropical and goes down way, way too easy. I've tried to replicate it at home and I can't figure out whyyyyyyyy it doesn't taste the same... 2. TCT Smoked Old Fashioned (bourbon, chocolate bitters, infused with smoke, and served over a giant coconut ice ball) - a perfect after dinner sipper! FOOD 1. Plain Hopper (a lacey-like coconut milk pancake served with coconut sambol, caramelized onions, and a Sri Lankan salsa on top) - you have to get one of these when you're here! There are so many delicious flavors and textures going on. 2. Hot Battered Mushrooms (polenta-battered mushrooms mixed with caramelized onions) - these are so rich, and so earthy, and so crunchy on the outside/melty on the inside! Don't eat them straight away, you will burn your mouth. And: DON'T FORGET TO SQUEEZE THE LEMON ALL OVER!!! Seriously, it makes the dish so much more complex and vibrant. 3. Kale & Cabbage Sambol (a fresh mix of kale and cabbage lightly sauteed in coconut oil) - for me, the brightness of this dish makes it a refreshing, lighter, cooler counterpart to the other much heavier foods.

Jaffna House - Good Chicken Kothu with extra curry and aubergine curry. In case you are wondering the aubergine is at the top right.

It's good for the people who just wants sit and have a some spicy meal.. No more authentic in dishes at all. Hoppers are like kerala style, Pittu was ok but the side dishes were horrible the potato curry and pol sambol. Ordered Prawn curry so much of salt when I complained they combined it with cold water and brought back to the table.. Idily good to break someone's head and Mutton Rolls were had a grassy smell of the mutton. String hoppers 5 for £ 5.95, that a crazy price. Hey what happened to you'll? After so many years of earning a goodwill now you'll just going down the drain.. feeling very sad.. I came back with so many reasons but I will not return again.

And it was AMAZING. On a weekend they do specials, and we were lucky it was a Friday because the Sat and Sun specials didn't seem that authentic. Friday's special was a vegetarian 12 item meal called Thali, which included 6 types of curry, rice, a vadai (Sri Lanken small doughnut shaped fried bread), a poppadom, and a rice based dessert like kheer (not sure what the Sri Lanken name is). We also ordered a portion of dosai (dosa), which comes as two pancakes, and the woman looked at us like we were crazy because the 12-item-dinner should have been enough. But screw it, it was payday today and I was going all out! It was such good food; deliciously homemade, varying levels of spice but nothing too hot and enjoyed with a mango lassi. And the price? Two Thalis, one dosai portion, one mango lassi and one mango juice for £15. FIFTEEN POUNDS for two people. Today I thought "I love living in Tooting!" They also do a lot of stuff to takeaway, including special takeaway meal deals for dirt cheap. Many families came in to pick up different rolls and fresh breads like chapatis and pooris. So, now Dosa n Chunty has been endorsed by Time Out and will receive more than enough custom from those willing to travel South of the river, we should support the other local restaurants. Go to Jaffna House!
