I would not recommend this place. I will start off by saying that I usually get my shoes cleaned/fixed at Craft Shoe Shop in Kentlands, MD. That stop is run by Noah who is very nice and super knowledgeable about his craft and has been in the service for 10 plus years. I couldn't go to him this time because of circumstances so I decided to try this cobbler in Westfield Montgomery Mall that I will be writing about. Below is my experience and review and it is VERY lengthy: I brought in shoes that I bought from the thrift store to be repaired. The soles of the derby's were coming apart so I just needed them to be glued back to the midsole. Somewhat easy fix. I go to this cobbler on a Friday and inquire about the service. The man who runs the shop tells me it is about $65 to repair, which I would say is reasonable. I ask him how long it would take him to fix and he tells me, "about a week." The man gives me a ticket and says to bring it back when I pick them up and that I would get "a text message" from him when the shoes are finished, as he asks for your phone number. This is where the problem arises. A week passes by and I even wait an extra day, so it is now Saturday of the next week. I receive no text so I decide to call the shop and inquire about the shoes. The man picks up and I ask about the shoes and I give him the ticket number, he goes to check. He comes back to the phone and says, "I'm still working on your shoes" and has the AUDACITY to say "don't call the shop unless you get a text." What? There is no point in having a phone if you're just going to answer and say that when people are inquiring about their stuff. There are previous reviews where the same situation is mentioned. So I ask him about how long until they are ready, he says "probably Monday and Tuesday." So a service that was first said to only take a week now needs another 4 days, which is I think in my opinion, unprofessional. I wait the extra couple days, and it is now Thursday, an extra TWO DAYS later after he said he would be finished and I STILL have no text message. I decide to call the shop AGAIN and this time he surprisingly says "yes it is ready, I just need to clean them up." At this point I rush over to the shop to pick up the shoes because I no longer want to deal with this shop. When I go to pick them up, I see one of my shoes in his hand and I tell him that those are mine, he says "oh I am just finishing up, sorry I was busy this morning" that's not really an excuse when the service was literally extended by 6 days. The shoes themselves are okay but like another prior review had said, the hassle alone is not worth the service. Would not recommend. read more

I've been to this Cobbler's Bench location a few times and I've yet to be disappointed. The first item I brought was actually a very old and worn down leather purse that they completely refinished and fixed all of the broken pieces. My most recent trip was for a leather pair of Madewell booties that were falling apart, literally. The heel was uneven and scuffed. The gluing was coming apart - they were basically talking to me! And the insoles were coming off. It was a bit on the pricey side to take care of everything but they turned out great and I can't wait to wear them. The turn around time was 3 days and it took longer for me to pick them up!! Some tips: Be prepared to pay when you leave the the shoes for repair. If you park in the covered garage area and enter the mall where Lucky Strike is, the location is right there on your right beside a nail salon - quick in and out of the mall. :) read more

The workmanship was very good, but it was expensive and it took them four weeks to finish - even though they committed to two. I had $300 dress shoes completely re-soled for $150. They lost two stars because the store ghosted me. I stopped by twice to check on my shoes and they were not ready either time. Last, I would have chosen to leave a comment on their company website, but they do not offer that. They insist on texting the customer the status of the repair and then they do not text. I have mixed feelings about this shoe repair shop. To echo Maggie M, I'm extremely wary and skeptical of places that demand upfront payment for their services, but I was desperate. Picture this: you have a brand new pair of Steve Madden boots. You wear them to your first Yelp Elite event and even get complimented on them. You go to put them on two days later and find that the heel has broken completely off (it was a low heel, so I didn't notice right away). Disappointment and anger severely understate my feelings in that moment. Anyway, I couldn't go without these boots during the Christmas holidays, so I took them to the Cobbler's bench at the last minute, hoping for a small Christmas miracle. I get there and the "cobbler" tells me he can fix my boot for $15. Sounds a little steep for one small heel, but again, I'm desperate. I pay up and he says the boot will be ready tomorrow, or possibly before I leave the mall in the evening. I leave both boots so he can have the other as a model for what the broken boot should look like, and I go shopping amid the holiday frenzy. I come back to the "bench" before leaving the mall and he's putting the finishing touches on my boot. When he hands them to me, I realize that he has "re-heeled" both boots. I then ask, "Is that why I had to pay $15? Was I charged for both boots?" He says yes and that they never charge for one shoe in a pair, they always charge for two. Okay, fine, whatever. But like the saying goes, why fix what isn't broken? To that I add, why pay to fix what isn't broken?? All the same, I was happy with the quick turnaround. My boot has a heel now, not to mention a scuff that wasn't there before, but I'll forgive that since it isn't too noticeable. Quick tip, if you come here (or visit any place that requires payment upfront), put your negotiating hat on and make sure that they will correct any wrongs free of charge. Better yet, ask them for a guarantee of 100% satisfaction that either replaces your shoes or refunds the money you spent to repair them. If they can't honor a guarantee, take your business elsewhere. Oh and one question for Maggie M: why pay $65 to repair boots? I know they are your favorite, but that money could've gone to a new pair that I'm sure you'd love just as much or more. I brought new boots I'd just bought in France to have pads put on the bottom soles to prolong the wear. Price? $45. Could it be he calculated that based on the sticker price on the bottom of the new boots? (Which did not reflect the heavy discount I got on sale.) Maybe. Maybe not. LOST MY BOOTS!! Definitely would NOT recommend this place for a number of reasons: 1- A customer of the cobbler just called me (yes a customer, not an employee of the store) to notify me that they had mistakenly received one of my boots and the cobbler GAVE them my phone number to call and coordinate with me. Ok, first I am pissed they gave my boot to someone else and more importantly I am pissed they gave my name and phone number willingly to a customer. This 100% violates client confidentiality. 2- Not only did a customer call me, but the Cobbler has not called me to confirm they have given my boot away. The Cobbler should have told the customer that they would coordinate with me. 3 - The customer told me that they did not have my other boot and there was nothing they can do about it. Hmm this is weird, because I have yet to pick up my boots ( well one boot). And there is nothing they can do? Are you kidding me? I will be going to the store tonight to receive a $25 credit for the original shoe repair AND receive $ for the cost of my lost boots! I will update this tonight when I return. Brought a pair of Kate Spade leather pumps that had terribly scuffed heels. And when I say terribly scuffed, I meant the leather was all pushed up and the plastic was showing, it was not pretty. For $20 ($10 a shoe), they replaced the bottom and smoothed the leather out, the results looked great! It was a bit more expensive than I had thought it'd be, but considering the location, the condition of my shoes, and the results, I'm pretty happy. read more

BEWARE! This shop is SHADY.. They don't stand by their word, ruined my shoes, and don't tell the truth. Think twice before bringing your shoes here, I wish I had read the reviews prior to doing so. 1) I stumbled upon the shop and inquired about fixing the bottoms on a pair of Cole Haan shoes I had only worn 4 times. I showed the representative pictures and was quoted $35 to fix the shoes. I came back with the shoes a few days later and a different representative insisted I pay $45 to fix the shoe despite what the other representative told me. At this time, the original representative denied ever telling me $35. 2) I arrived to pick up the shoes one day after the day I was told they would be ready and the shoes were not ready as they still needed to be polished. At this time, I inspected the fixed shoe thoroughly and initially thought they did a good job. 3) I came back two days later to pick up the shoes and the shoes were now polished BUT had stains all over the top and side of the shoes (appeared to be oil stains). The store insisted I brought the shoes in like that and the staining did not happen while in their care. I showed them pictures detailing the condition of the shoes just before I brought them in and also notified them that when I was in the shop two days prior, the shoes did not have this staining. They also claimed they don't keep any oil in the store (meanwhile I noticed WD40 sitting on top of one of the machines). After lots of excuses from the shop and much complaining on my behalf, they agreed to try to get the stains off the shoe (they still never admitted fault and it was a mistake for me to leave the shoes there again). 4) I came back a few days later to pick the shoes up and the stains were less visible HOWEVER the shoe was now a darker shade of brown. It clearly appeared they had polished the shoe in a darker, non-cognac brown in attempts to get the stains out. I asked how they went about getting the stains out they didn't give me an answer and said all they put on the shoe was a cleaner and clear polish (this was clearly not the case). I got tired of bickering with them and decided to just take the shoes with me and leave. 5) I wore the shoes a few days later. While wearing the shoes, I realized the coating of whatever they had put on the shoe appeared to be peeling and flaking after an hour of wearing the shoe with minimal walking. I took the shoes off to inspect and to my surprise, the shoes were indeed peeling, flaking, and had a rippled surface in many places on the surface. At this time I also noticed that they didn't just replace the bottom on the shoe that was bad but also changed the perfectly new and good bottom on the other shoe (this wouldn't be a huge deal BUT they never made me aware of this). 6) I returned to the store that afternoon with the shoes on my feet and stood there barefooted expressing how upset I was with the quality of the work they provided me and the way they've handled things as a whole. They showed no remorse for DESTROYING my practically new shoes. I insisted on a refund and they gave it to me but my shoes are RUINED. read more

The guy is shady! I went one night to ask how much it would cost to replace a heel on my boots. The guy said $10. I needed to bring another pair of shoes to get the heel replaced at the same time so I went back the next evening. I brought a pair of dress shoes and my boots and asked the guy how much it would cost. He said $10 for the shoes and $15 for the boots. I was like "WHAT?! You said $10 for these boots yesterday!" Brought in a pair of tall boots recently because the zipper had come partially unstitched on one of them. They charged me $30 to fix the single boot zipper, which I thought seemed quite steep. Within a month the zipper they replaced was coming off again. I do not live in the area so I cannot bring them back in however I did email them about this issue and received zero response.
