The entire cafe has a cozy diner setup with plenty of seating. We decided to start the day with a simple bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich as well as a hot chocolate. The food was quickly prepared and brought to us. The hot chocolate was rich and warm while the sandwich was light yet filling. The cafe also offers boxed lunch options for the road which is a terrific option for travelers and visitors hitting the trail like us. My only complaint is that they were only open from Thursday to Monday, because I would easily return every morning!

We had received recommendations to go here if we were looking for local music from the information booth in Baddeck a few days before, and when we arrived in the area after travelling up over the Cape, it seemed like a good idea. We had already had a large lunch, so a big dinner wasn't really in our plans, but I still needed something so I settled on getting the chili, and was quite surprised to have served before me a bowl of chili that was excellent, beating out (in my not so humble opinion) some Triple-A rated chilis from Austin, Texas! This was just a very good chili! The jalapeño cornbread was a bit disappointing, as it was a bit dry and the jalapeño really didn't stand out at all. We had planned well, as there was lively entertainment that night with a fiddler who was holding her CD release party with help from one of the fiddlers from the Celtic Music Centre down in Judique. The pub itself is pleasant, and a place that you can just imagine locals going to all the time (and there were certainly locals there this evening). If I get back up into Cape Breton, I will certainly be returning to the Red Shoe Pub for another taste of what Cape Breton has to offer.

It's made pretty well, but this is very much one of those places that tries to be different for the sake of being different. Given that their competition is an old bar and hotel, this is a weird choice that makes just eating that granola bar you packed a whole lot more appealing. The entire restaurant is a medium sized room with no barriers or sections and a hallway leading to bathrooms, and it was probably the loudest I've ever been to. They have outdoor seating, but seem reluctant to use it for some reason. Skipped out on dessert just to get away from the rude and sickly guests, and taking the hint from everything else I ordered that it would probably be bad too. Servers were okay. One girl in particular had a demeanor and courtesy to her that ended up being the only real positive of my time here. But, tending to my water needs isn't enough, even if done well. A quick review of a quick lunch stop. My lobster roll, with lettuce, a few sprouts, and mayo on a…read morebrioche bun, toasted with garlic butter, was decent. (I'm not one of those purists that think a lobster roll should be just lobster meat on a roll; that's boring.) An adequate amount of lobster, mostly large chunks not shreds, but too much mayonnaise. Pretty expensive though at $32 including fries and coleslaw but I've seen worse. Not exactly traditional with lobster roll but I'm on a poutine kick so I upgraded the fries to poutine for an additional $4. I've had better and I've also had worse. The fries, with skins, seemed freshly made in house, the gravy ok, but a bit skimpy on the cheese curds and the pieces were too small. The coleslaw was very good, but why was the portion so skimpy? The wife's chicken sandwich (buttermilk fried chicken thigh, toasted brioche, honey hot drizzle, dill pickle slaw, mayo) was outstanding. I was thrilled to see that an excellent local cider, Rebel Rose from Island Folk in Sydney, was available, so of course I had one of those. Menu is pretty small but in addition to the sandwiches, "pub fare", and a few seafood items there are a small number of entrees (served after 4:00 PM), and some interesting appetizers and desserts. They host occasional music events (Celtic, folk, etc.) so this should be a pleasant place to spend an evening.
