An absolute MUST for any visitor to Cape Briton and Nova Scotia. The people, music, food, service, and atmosphere is THE best of any pub I've ever visited, here or abroad. Ready to return tomorrow, and am highly recommending to any family or friend visiting the island. WONDERFUL and SO MUCH FUN.

Today was the final day of the season. Glad we came and stopped on our way to Cabot Cliffs Golf Course. Butternut Squash soup was excellent and the fish was in a homemade beer batter. My daughter had the vegan chili. Also excellent. The salad with their homemade dressing was unique. Full of nice greens and cucumber but the dressing was nice but different. I wouldn't buy it again. Otherwise, wonderful staff and food.

Fun Celtic music. Ordered the red shoe ale and loved it. My husband got the bulwark cider which was quite nice. Lively and crowded on a Sunday night. Cover charge of $8 for the music even though you are eating. Don't let that keep you away. I had the scallops and my husband had the fish and chips. The scallop fish came with 5 scallops, some vegetables and the best sauce ever!!!Good food. Not too expensive. It's loud with the music so don't come her to have a deep conversation. Good pub food, entertainment and fun ! We came on a Sunday night and it was crowded. I imagine their could be quite a wait on a Friday or Saturday and the bar is very small to wait (maybe 4 seats). So glad I came and will be back next time we are here!!!

This is definitely the place to be in Cape Breton if you are looking for a place that serves up the local entertainment. We had received recommendations to go here if we were looking for local music from the information booth in Baddeck a few days before, and when we arrived in the area after travelling up over the Cape, it seemed like a good idea. We had already had a large lunch, so a big dinner wasn't really in our plans, but I still needed something so I settled on getting the chili, and was quite surprised to have served before me a bowl of chili that was excellent, beating out (in my not so humble opinion) some Triple-A rated chilis from Austin, Texas! This was just a very good chili! The jalapeño cornbread was a bit disappointing, as it was a bit dry and the jalapeño really didn't stand out at all. We had planned well, as there was lively entertainment that night with a fiddler who was holding her CD release party with help from one of the fiddlers from the Celtic Music Centre down in Judique. The pub itself is pleasant, and a place that you can just imagine locals going to all the time (and there were certainly locals there this evening). If I get back up into Cape Breton, I will certainly be returning to the Red Shoe Pub for another taste of what Cape Breton has to offer.

    The scallop pasta special

Highly rated on various websites; yet, disappointed with this experience. The setting is an old house, quaint. We were also there during live music, more on that later. Two of us had a "catch of the day" special. It looked pretty interesting. Scallop and Chantrelle Crab Pasta with white wine & cream sauce, bacon and scallions. Man that sounded good. We were psyched to eat some scallops. Too bad we really did not get what we THOUGHT we were ordering. There were (count them) exactly TWO scallops in each order. So, technically the "Scallop" non-plural on the specials board was kinda prophetic. The pasta serving was large and consisted mainly of pasta and bacon with a rich sauce. The later two were a little overwhelming. Oh, and the live music - got nailed with a cover charge we were uninformed about.

Red Shoe beer on tap was good The lobster salad special was so-so. Mabou Seafood Chowder was good, and on a par with other chowder we've had in the Maritime Provinces. (That's pretty good!) Service friendly and efficient. Very pub like atmosphere. (That's a plus for a place with "pub" in it's name.) We liked the place enough to purchase a souvenir glass mug, but as tourists passing through, I doubt we will ever pass this way again.

Great find on the Cabot Trail! Have the meatloaf! A little pricey, but a great small-town pub. Very busy at dinner time, but quick and efficient service.

Wow. Delicious yet again. Today's special is a lemon & chive lobster salad sandwich. Oh and spicy tomato soup. I ordered both and was not disappointed. Well done Red Shoe.

After spending a brief time at the Port Hood Day Park enjoying the nice views of the water and Port Hood Island on a sunny Sunday morning, we decided to stop off for a light breakfast at Sandeannie's Bakery & Tea Room (formerly Greco Pizza Donair Xpress). The place was very busy when we arrived here with a mix of locals and tourists. The place is not fancy which consists of a cozy dining room with self serve table seating and order counter. There are also bakery goods & breads (in clear plastic bags)for sale on the shelf including rolls, biscuits, scones, cookies, muffins, and oatcakes. The breakfast menu (served all day) includes a variety of egg dishes, breakfast sandwiches, French toast, breakfast sides, cinnamon rolls, and other baked goods. The lunch menu (from 11AM) includes sandwiches, burgers, salads, soup, chili, seafood chowder or lobster bisk, seafood, fish cakes, and all beef meat pie. For dessert, they also offer Deep Fried Mars Bar and Deep Fried Ice Cream. The prices here seem reasonable, most entrees $6.00-$9.95 and seafood dishes $8.50-$12.95. They also offer a kids menu and specials too. This is how it works here. They have restaurant menus you can look at, but you have to order your food and drink at the register & pay first, then your order is brought out to your table. The coffee and tea is also self serve. For breakfast, we ordered 2 coffees, a cinnamon roll, and a classic breakfast with two eggs (scrambled) with fish cakes, home fries, homemade toast, oat mash, and orange slice garnish. The brewed coffee was good and refillls were self serve. The cinnamon roll was okay, which was served warm and slightly dry inside, and not the frosted icing kind we're accustomed to enjoying. As for the classic breakfast, the scrambled eggs were soft, the homemade bread was toasted crisp and lightly buttered. The soft grilled fish cakes had a slightly pungent odor, otherwise tasted just fine served with chow. The very modest portion of home fries were fresh cut potatoes lightly grilled and lightly oily outside. The "oat mash/porridge" was very dense and quite good. In all, breakfast here was good, but not wow. As we were finishing up and getting ready to head out on the road again, the very high pitched smoke detector went off over the register area near the kitchen. The owner was using a serving tray to try to fan the heat under the smoke detector. "A small lesson in fire safety" remarked another customer. FREE WIFI with password

(I'm not one of those purists that think a lobster roll should be just lobster meat on a roll; that's boring.) An adequate amount of lobster, mostly large chunks not shreds, but too much mayonnaise. Pretty expensive though at $32 including fries and coleslaw but I've seen worse. Not exactly traditional with lobster roll but I'm on a poutine kick so I upgraded the fries to poutine for an additional $4. I've had better and I've also had worse. The fries, with skins, seemed freshly made in house, the gravy ok, but a bit skimpy on the cheese curds and the pieces were too small. The coleslaw was very good, but why was the portion so skimpy? The wife's chicken sandwich (buttermilk fried chicken thigh, toasted brioche, honey hot drizzle, dill pickle slaw, mayo) was outstanding. I was thrilled to see that an excellent local cider, Rebel Rose from Island Folk in Sydney, was available, so of course I had one of those. Menu is pretty small but in addition to the sandwiches, "pub fare", and a few seafood items there are a small number of entrees (served after 4:00 PM), and some interesting appetizers and desserts. They host occasional music events (Celtic, folk, etc.) so this should be a pleasant place to spend an evening.

Stopping in for lunch, I went with their soup and half sandwich. For the soup, I got the daily special, hamburger, and tacked on a turkey sandwich. Oddly, for the sandwich they asked if I wanted lettuce, salt or pepper...and that was it. I guess Gram is staunchly against tomatoes! The sandwich was decent - chunks of actual roasted turkey breast, not sad, slimey slices. It was a bit more minimalist than I'd like, but the good meat and fresh, house-made bread definitely elevated it. The hamburger soup was rich and hearty, with a peppery bite. On a return visit, I was there during breakfast hours. They don't actually have a proper breakfast menu, but I grabbed a glazed cinnamon roll and a coffee. The cinnamon roll was very good - fluffy and fresh, with the added decadence of the icing.
