I am probably among his first customers, when he had the Euclid shop. This was in the hey days of the CWE, Flamingo Cafe, Europa, Balaban's, Culpepper's and others. I wanted a sandal with no back strap and with Steve's input, I got my first pair of custom sandals. The toe strap finally broke, and an identical new pair was purchased when the shop was on Delmar. The third pair was purchased while he was in Belleville. I wore and still wear these sandals virtually every day that the weather allows. Cheaper, accepted by the masses, but classless, flip-flops have never had a place in my closet. I don't need new sandals, but I need Steve's skill to see if he can salvage a Mary Francis purse in which the "leather" shoulder strap, cracked, peeled, chipped and is unusable, as it is. I believe anything that you buy from Steve will be as well made and your experience will make you believe that there are still people who don't accept mediocrity in their products. He carefully examined my piece, advised that it didn't need repair and explained how to get the zippers working smoothly again. Character and craftsmanship seem to be decreasing in supply these days in service professions. This gentleman's bedside manner may not be off the charts, but (judging from the shoes someone picked up before me), he is a skilled and very honest craftsman. We were referred to Hugo by the staff at Green Shag, who recommended text message as the best way to get in touch as it's easier for English/Spanish translation and communication. I text Hugo a photo of the chairs and he sent me a quote and instructions on how much fabric would be needed the same day. Hugo provided the foam, and we dropped off the chairs and fabric on a Tuesday. The chairs were completed by Sunday. They are beautifully done and I felt that the cost was more than fair and a great value. We would definitely enlist Hugo's help again whenever we next have upholstery needs.
