I recently visited the Ann Taylor store in the Riverside Mall in Hackensack, New Jersey. I received…read moreexcellent guidance from Stylist Jane Charshafian that led to my purchase of a suit jacket for my wife for Christmas. My wife was very pleased with the item's design, quality, and color, but as often happens when I buy clothes for my wife, the size I'd chosen, a 2, wasn't quite right. Accompanied by my wife, I returned to the store on December 26, but found no size 4 on the rack. Store Manager Debbie Connolly stepped in to help. She double-checked the rack, then the stock in back. When she couldn't find the exact replacement, she checked Ann Taylor's remote inventory. She then had my wife try on a jacket whose materials and design are identical except for its lapel in both a 4 regular and a 4 petite to ensure the optimal fit. With the 4 petite chosen, Ms. Connolly processed a refund for the returned jacket and took shipping details for its replacement. Despite the fact that the store was quite busy, Ms. Connolly calmly yet efficiently took what some might consider extra steps--all while maintaining a cordial, professional attitude--to make sure that my wife was happy with our purchase. I'm probably dating myself here, but this experience seemed a throwback to past generations' approach to customer service. The fact that I had a very positive interaction with Ms. Charshafian as well suggests that this high level of customer service wasn't a fluke, but rather a part of the store's culture--which, I'd suggest, can also be attributed to management. It's this kind of service that builds customer loyalty. Ms. Connolly and Ms. Charshafian are a credit to the Ann Taylor brand.

During my most recent trip, one of the associates, Delia, was incredibly rude and spoke to me in a condescending way throughout my time in the store. I'm a big fan of their bags & dresses, because they're always so colorful & reflective of the season. I stopped in a week after their grand opening, and it seemed like everyone was still in a festive mood! The employees are very sweet and friendly. The store has a great flow, with lots of open shelving (and not so many floor displays to maneuver around) and plenty of light. Bags are mostly up front (and along the windows), with jewelry in the middle and clothes/shoes near the back of the store. And everything is open, which means you can pick up, try on, and feel all the items in the store -- especially important when it comes to jewelry! So even though I tried my hardest to resist, I ended up buying a lovely springtime bracelet that perfectly matched my new dress. I took one from the display, but an employee offered to get me a "fresh" one from their storage and wrapped it nicely in one of their signature colorful boxes. Yay! I'm so happy to add this shop to my regular rotation at Garden State.

This is a small Banana Republic... OK, it's a VERY small Banana Republic…read more I have never had a bad experience with the people at this place. This may seem like an odd comment, but the area is very upper-middle class to upper class, where you sometimes get kids working the shops who feel superior to you for no reason other than their parents are rich. At Banana, they're always willing to help you out. Just the people alone would give this location 5 stars. Unfortunately, the place is really small (I know I keep saying it, but it is). I really feel like I can stick my head in the door and see everything they have without actually going in. The lay out is pretty standard for most BRs; nicer attire in the front (read: suits, suit separates, the hot new looks), with an area in the middle for check-out, some shoes and cologne in said middle section, followed by the more casual clothes at the end. It is obvious the women's side is a little bigger, and is not interrupted by the register area which does hinder your shopping experience by making it a hassle to get through. I feel that the clothes selection is very lacking (I can speak for the men not so much the women). I can rarely go in there and find anything I need. I've gone in and seen some very nice jackets, even a sweater or two, but they are always tiny. I can never go in expecting to find anything larger than a Medium. I need a size 38 pant, and you will not find that in stores (unless it is an online return), especially not in little shops like this one. I wish I could give this location the full 5 stars due to the helpful sales personnel, the fantastic out-of-the-way location, and the always classy attire they sell. Unfortunately it is a store, and the inability to have ever actually bought anything from this location stops me from doing so. I can honestly say the only things I have ever been able to purchase at this location are either cologne, perfume, or possibly a pair of glasses. Everything else I have had to head to one of the malls and deal with that mess. I know their space is limited, but I still feel it has to be compared to other similar shops. The fact of the matter is I can't give a clothing store I have never bought any clothes from a 5... not even a 4, no matter how great the sales reps are.
