I've never been a "gym guy". I grew up thinking I was too small to be athletic until I rediscovered…read moresports as a young adult. So when I say, "I love this gym", know that it's not coming from somejock who loved working out...and I do love this gym. I had been searching for a form of exercise to replace the activity and community of a team sport after I suffered a ruptured Achilles. I found GLSC through a free trial and had no idea it was going to change the way I thought and felt about fitness. GLSC workouts were the highlight of my week, and over the course of a year, I saw my skills, strength, and enjoyment improved significantly. Here's why I love Green Lake Strength and conditioning: 1) The coaches: Shout out to Coaches Hannah, Zeyab, and Jonathan, who were my first and primary coaches. They are the perfect balance between motivating and moderating, helping you gauge your skill/strength limits and safely push them. They are excellent at teaching form and technique, and they brought my high-school-level understanding of weightlifting up to par. Despite having an injured Achilles shoulder, their guidance helped ensure that I never injured myself (and in fact reduced my pain through strengthening and increasing range of motion) even while greatly increasing my strength and endurance. They can help you improve whether you're a beginner or an expert. 2) The community: GLSC has a vibrant community. Members get to know each other but not in an in-your-face sort of way - you can be a casual weekly member or you can join your fellow members on unofficial hikes and official BBQs and gatherings. There's a very wide range of ages and experiences in these classes, and they didn't make me feel "dumb" or out of place. Classes have been kept to 12 people max, which after experiencing much smaller and larger classes, 12 is a great number - not too crowded but not awkwardly empty. You also get to know each other through the infamous question of the day - just lean into it, it'll be fun, I promise. ;) 3) Facilities/programming: After trying several other gyms, I can confidently say that none of them quite match up to GLSC's programming. GLSC excels because of the three distinct segments of their strenght & conditioning workouts: Warm-ups, skill/strength-building, and WOD. The warm-ups aren't just stretching and jumping jacks - they are specifically design to engage the muscle groups that you'll be using, they help reinforce the techniques needed to complete the rest of the workout of the day, and they get your heart pumping. Other gyms I've experienced rush this part or do the bare minimum. The skill/strength segment is where I learned the most over the last year because they remove the speed element and focus on quality over quantity. Again, the other gyms I've experienced rush this part and either skip teaching altogether or push you into a higher pace too soon. They also offer a wide range of modifications and equipment to meet each person's level of skill and strength. The WODs vary between low, medium, and high metabolic conditioning and are varied in type and style so you're never bored. There's no "leg day" or "arm day" - your entire body will be exhausted every day. They oddly fill you with both a sense of dread and excitement, knowing how hard they will be but also how good you'll feel afterwards. And for what it's worth, the coaches have generally good tastes in music - good balance between pumping you up but not obnoxious techno. A note about cost: It's expensive. But I look at value for cost, not low cost. The quality of the coaching and programming alone is easily worth it in my eyes. Add to that a clean, high-quality facility, fun community, and personal results and I was happy to pay the higher cost. I loved this gym...but sadly had to give up my membership when my workplace moved away. I'm still searching for a new gym, forever comparing it to GLSC and still not finding its equal. Congrats, Nate and team, for building this wonderful gym and community! Hit me up if you want to expand to S. Seattle!

Whenever I am trying to work at a steady pace, and move from one machine to another, most of the other members are monopolizing the equipment by sitting lazily on the machines, all the while staring at their phones. Hey, after all, the seats ARE comfortable, and everybody else does it! What can a fitness center do about this? Well, it would be nice if LA Fitness could put up a sign encouraging members to stand up and move away at the end of their set, and share their equipment with other members. LA Fitness could even provide little chairs or small benches, for the smart-phone addicts to sit on between sets. As for me, I like to quickly do my set, and then move on to the next machine---combining resistance training with cardio training. My approach is designed for overall health! Hey, I thought "health" was what these fitness centers were designed for....

He has helped me with phenomenal strength and development which has helped me in all areas of my life as a result of the power lifting methods and coaching. He even guided me to competitions where I got an American record and World record too for push pull in my age and weight class. He is knowledgeable, scientific and unafraid to point out an incorrect lift. It's for my safety and personal growth. Rebeca and Cris are two other excellent trainers at the gym as well. Very respectful and encouraging. They make the gym. It has everything you need for a community gym. I drive from Burien and in the few days per month I'm in the Seattle area, aiming at twice or three per week to lift, I make my schedule include aka Rose, Roosevelt. Skip the Space Needle. Go see Rose. No one should mess with a muscular, knowledgeable guy named Rose. Anyway, I have made big adjustments in my work life and to where I am in Seattle to make sure to continue training with this guy. He has his 84 year old mother in there lifting weights too. She has made the news by her showing up at American and World level competitions. He is incredibly respectful, down to earth and monumental in his knowledge about lifting. He used to also compete in body building so he knows a lot about diet and proper exercise. There are so many nice trainers out there. But he is the real deal. Other front desk people or staff is pretty nice and helpful. The club has a good welcoming feel. Kevin, a former long time manager who now manages a construction team, still comes in to say hello to patrons. There is something great about this gym set in motion by these folks I mentioned. I'm going to take it as long as it continues. Thank you!

There are always weight racks and machines available in the morning and there is plenty of space compared to the other options. The facilities look small from the outside, but they are much larger inside than you would imagine (basement gym room, pilates/dance room, and the sprawling floor with plenty of thread-mills, ellipticals, bike machines, rowing machines, weight machines, multiple weight racks, at least 4-5 adjustable benches near the free weights). Yes, the equipment is somewhat dated but for what you get it's a pretty good value considering you're not constantly colliding with people just to get a workout in in the morning. I've never had any issues here with cleanliness, and things are kept in tip-top shape. The folks who go to this gym are respectful of their surroundings and clean up after themselves for the most part, unlike the slobbery I saw down at the University YMCA (back ages ago in 2019-things might've changed!). Shoutout to Kevin for the friendliest service (the staff is helpful and responsive)! I can't speak for the other reviewers who seem to have a gross sense of entitlement, but this was the best gym I've been to in the Green Lake area. PS If you're afraid of COVID, why are you going to a gym? Just stay home, or exercise outside...for free.
