Club Noir claims to be an "extraordinary burlesque club" / Club night.
A group of friends and myself went along to give it's christmas show a chance, after not being to a Club Noir night for along time, most recent experiences being unimpressive.
Well what to say, O2 Academy is it's usual and this is not a review of the venue so no comment on it.
The night started well enough with a few drinks before going along, arrived to find it was quite, but it was still relatively early so no big deal, few more drinks and it did pick up a bit, but never what you would call busy.
The burlesque performances were generally a bit below par except for one or two, the fire eater, think her stage name is Verity Power, was very good. Some of this I think comes down to Club Noir's old policy, where by if you work for them then you are not allowed to work for anyone else, which means that virtually all the decent / experienced / not new to the scene and didn't know any better burlesque acts wouldn't work for them, but I guess that changed as I recognized a couple of the names.
And the musical performers were good.
Generally it felt tired, and lack luster. This used to be a big night, and at Halloween I understand it still is, mainly due to the crowd. Now it has lost is originality and atmosphere, it needs an injection of something creative again.
Maybe it's because over the years I have been to too many really good burlesque shows, see anything which involves the "Academy of Burlesque & Cabaret" or Dolly Tartan, that I have become jaded when it come to people just doing a basic strip, and calling it burlesque.
So all in all a good night drinking and dancing with friends, but that could have been anywhere, the club itself was not up to past glories and needs an injection of originality and energy if it wants to get the crowds back. read more
