It is kind of funny, for how incredibly otherwise interesting Lisbon is as a city, foodie-wise,…read morethat it definitely doesn't have much of a craft *cocktail* scene, and what it does have, is hidden in plain sight, whether as a pizza shop (the other surprisingly good actually-a-cocktail-bar I found), or in this case more literally, as a brothel turned tourist trap-looking bar that actually does have quite good cocktails. Admittedly - it was clearly designed so that it could function at night, when my hunch is that it's more likely to be an absolute madhouse, and it probably a bit feels more like a nightclub. Good thing for me, then, that they're open, and I visited, at 2 PM on a Friday, when they only had a few customers, my favorite sort of vibe for a bar. Yes, they do have extremely suggestively murals up all over the place, because they're committed to the bit (committed enough that if it turned out they were actually also a secret brothel to this day, I'd be like... yeah, that'd track. To my knowledge they are in fact just a bar, though.) But at least when they aren't busy, it is *also* one of the small number of proper craft cocktail bars I found in Lisbon while I was there. Their cocktails were 12-14 euro as of when I was there a few months ago - which a couple years ago would've felt a little pricey, but now feels pretty par for the course. The menu cocktails were mostly all prebatched, but have clearly been prebatched freshly and with *purpose*, as the two cocktails I tried here were *quite* good. One with gin, roobois, ancho reyes and yellow pepper, and one, I was excited to finally see, using Beirao in something more interesting than just tonics or spritzes, with pisco, Beirao, pineaple and eucalyptus. Great presentation, great drinks, and again at least as of when they were least busy, quick service (as you would expect, given that, again, it is mostly prebatched.) That said, if like me, you only speak English, ymmv - the one bartender when I was there spoke English like a native English speaker. Great bartender, too. Then he left and another bartender took over, who spoke zero English whatsoever. As it turns out, you also don't need to speak the same language to order a drink off a menu and then pay for it, though, but it is still *nice* speaking the same language as the bartender.

Such a bad experience we had to check out early. Hoping to…read moreenjoy a fun vacation with my partner, I booked the World's Pearl room, compete with air conditioning, breakfast, and a steam shower, the works! Upon arriving we were greeted by a lovely woman who told us a cool story about the hotel, gave us a bottle of wine, and showed us how to get to our room. When we arrived in the room, the thermostat read 30 degrees (86f). We figured out how to turn the air on, which, at full fan was a trickle at best. After speaking to the front desk, we were told that, yes, it was in fact hot, but it would be looked at. It was, but no solution was given. At around midnight, another person came up to check, apologized profusely for how hot the room was (now at 28c/85f) and left to hopefully go find a solution. He did not. When he came back he again, he apologized and asked if I would stick it out for the night even though it would be difficult to sleep in hopes that a fix could be found in the morning. After about 60-90 minutes of sleep and lots of frustration, the next morning I had to hunt down the staff in hopes that there would be a fix. The staff member (a new one) came and again checked out the room, apologized profusely, and asked if I would be willing to change rooms. I said absolutely yes. After about an hour or so, he told me via WhatsApp that changing rooms would not be an option and the only solution is if the technician could come fix the air conditioning. Several hours passed, and at 4pm I was told that the technician had come and said that there was nothing wrong with the ac, even though the thermostat still read 28 degrees. I went back to the office to get my cancellation and refund and was denied that opportunity. The staff member (the same very lovely lady from before) tried to get her manager to reason and help, but he refused, and said that he would come speak to me but I had to wait 30 minutes. 45 minutes passed and I had to go downstairs AGAIN to see where he was. He came up the stairs and immediately started interrupting me, not listening, accusing me of lying, and didn't even offer to give a refund, cancel my upcoming nights' stay, or make anything right. He then said, after going up to room and feeling the heat himself that he could switch my room with somebody else, not solving the problem, but merely passing it on to another customer. During that conversation, he: · Interrupted me at every chance. He never let me explain the issue because he had already made up his mind. · Told me I left all the windos open which caused the ac to be off, but then changed his story to just one shutter · Accused me of bullying him, when he insinuated that my size is what caused the room to "feel" too hot. · Accused me of calling him and his colleagues various names, when I only said that it was "dumb shit" (possibly a language barrier issue) · Acted erraticly, and thought he could use my frustrations against me. · Spoke about me right in front of me in Portuguese, unknowing that my partner could understand. This was just the beginning. We ended up eating the cost of the room and leaving because of the abuse and terrible treatment by the manager. His name, he said: was "lulu. Because it doesn't matter". He wouldn't even give me the respect or professional curtesy of telling me his name, but accused me of being the bully. Just arrived to my new hotel, the Docas, where I was greeted with a smile, given some snacks, AND they even called the owner of the fado bar I have reservations to so that I would have a great experience! And the ac works! Stay away from this hotel.

I came across Cinco Lounge through my travel guide and I'm happy I did. Cinco Lounge is located in a residential neighborhood across the street from a casual park. As you walk into Cinco, you immediately feel the vibe with the dim lights and lounge feel. Since I was riding solo, I sat at the bar and was welcomed immediately by the friendly bartenders. They also have some tables and comfortable seating. I really can't say enough about the service. Both bartenders were cool and make you feel right at home. They have an extensive cocktail list and this is what you should go with as their cocktails are creative to say the least. I saw one guy next to me drinking a cocktail that had an ice cream cone in it...mind blown. I went with a refreshing cocktail with kiwi and other fresh fruit which hit the spot. I only stayed for an hour or so but met a girl from Argentina at the bar. Along with the bartenders, it was nice to be a part of a group in a foreign land. Hands-down my favorite bar in Lisbon so it's a must!

This is his newest venture. 14 course tasting dinner and live entertainment. A tidbit: The chefs' great great grandfather opened the most elegant of clubs back in the 1900's, and BECO is inspired by its glamour and sophistication. Beyond my expectations from the very beginning. As we make our way into the address given on site, it is in the very back of Bairro do Avillez, behind a hidden secret curio cabinet cupboard. Think of it like a 1920's speakeasy. Glamorous venue, dimly lit. Unbeknownst to us, we are greeted by the hilariously rude (an act) master of ceremonies posing also as the maître de. He looks me up and down and looks at us with disdain (only because he turns 4 guests in front of us without advanced tickets away with a "shhhhaaaa". I mention we have a reservation, and he retorts with a snarl. Oh do you? I am loving this. His act is on par! We are then sat at a table close enough to the stage and in front of a faux dressing/powder room stage. About 20 tables in total, and only one reservation per evening, promptly at 8:30M, don't be late. André, our server from India, was helpful and very nice! They do not reveal the tasting menu ahead of time, so prepared to be surprised. If you any allergens or dietary restrictions, let your server know ahead of time, and they are very accommodating. I am allergic to capsacin (the seeds inside peppers). My only upset was that I wish I had requested a table closer to the stage, I was stuffed in the corner by the ladies powder room stage, and hard to see in front of the table in front of, I was dodging and sitting up in my seat often. (I'm 5'3). Our dining experience: The show, in between courses: Talented actors, engaging, and even stopping at our respective tables here and there. A bit risqué, but I loved every second of it. The show does not distract from the food, it's all part of the experience! 1. A beautiful centerpiece of a rose, and soft delicate apple inside! 2. Sunroot and mustard seeds. Crunchy thin root chip with exquisite filling. 4. Olive oil "ravioli", if you've seen molecular gastronomy, this is something fun. One gulp, and "squish" explosion in your mouth. 5. Foie gras with cotton candy and lyo raspberry. Super fun play with the candy! 6. Coastal prawn ceviche and flowers with yuzu honey, tigers' milk snow and lyo corn. Ceviche was born here. 7. LT yolk, artichokes, parm, and truffle. Every texture in the book. Plus shaved truffles. Yes please. 8. Tagliatelle with giant prawn, fennel, and caviar. Pretty dish, the seafood was perfectly cooked and firm to the bite. I didn't love the pasta. 9. Snapper (they served oxtail, but I'm allergic to hot peppers, so this dish was changed out), this was tasty enough, but I hear the oxtail was out of this world. 10. Mon Chēri, a frozen treat of what appeared to look like a cherry, but it was not. But, it was good! 11. Strawberry, chantilly cream, basil ice cream with a tuile basket on top. I think the chantilly was frozen with nitrogen, and the basil ice cream was super refreshing. 12. Diamonds are a girls best friend. Very cutesy, I think it was lemon sorbet in the shape of diamonds. 13. Lipsticks made of a fruit sorbet. Also, classy and creative. 14. Chocolate Pearl, served in a clamshell. Cute, but just a piece of chocolate. NOTE: drinks are not included in the price. A few of them tasty, but a few of them not as good. Spent an additional $45 EUROS on 3 drinks and water.

We have total sixteen courses. Each course has different feelings and very creative. The Show: The show has four persons team. Most of them can dance and sing except one is very good dancer. The show was divided into segments. Begin with cabaret, fado, modern and mixed. The show is a plus to the dinner. Great performance. Some dance puppets dance. The dinner is amazing. We started surprising compliment dish - Minha Rose. The trick is to find out one paddle is eatable. Then follow by four courses of appetizers. I like the most is the taco and control candy four-gras. The main course includes flower paddle ceviche and OX tail are great item to have. They close with many appetizers such as strawberry lipsticks and more. The food and dinner not cheap but worth more.

Having experienced fado outside of Portugal I didn't feel strongly that it was a must-do, but when I found myself at night on the street that is known for fado I prioritized it. For the best fado experience I recommend an intimate space, hopefully crowded with people but also with a view to the performers. Tasca do Chico is exactly that place. The doorman told us that space was standing room only, at the (tiny) bar. From there we could see and hear the performers while ordering food and drink. We'd not been there long before we were offered an available seat at a table which caused us to order more food and drink and stay a little longer. The fado here is quite good, made even more enjoyable as the artists change quite frequently; a song or two and a new artist steps forward, all very talented and enjoyable to watch and hear. The fado places tend to have lines out the door and a doorman managing entry. A place across the street looked much bigger but the intimacy is, in my opinion, what makes the experience both unique and special. Even if you have to start at the bar, Tasca do Chico is a great place to experience fado.
