Shadow Creek Farm - Shadow Creek Farm party room (at Ridley Creek Park)

    Shadow Creek Farm

Shadow Creek Farm has taken over the lease at the equestrian facility inside Ridley Creek State…read morePark. I started a listing for their Media location but Yelp condensed it all to their main address. I'm sad to leave a negative first review, but this was a pretty bad experience. I emailed about renting the arena for a kid party (listed on their website at $30/hr). My purpose for it was for a 2-3hr birthday party where we would use it to see a presentation of rescue animals, and then have cake/games at the adjacent park pavilion if food could not be served in the arena. I was quite specific in email about my needs and intentions, and got a clear reply from Corrine that yes we could do that. Corrine then offered to use the party room (without making it clear that the party room is a completely separate rental fee of $375 for the first 2 hours, plus $50 each additional hour). I asked to visit the facility and with her slow response times, we finally set it up. Our appointment was for 8:45am. We arrived just before that. By 9am Corrine wasn't there yet. Corrine never gave her title but when we searched around for her, someone said she was the business owner and she'd be there by 9:15am. By 9:15am Corrine finally arrived, no apologies for her lateness, and she looked surprised to see us, like she forgot we were even coming. We found her standing at her car by the party room, and she proceeded to unload her car in front of us rather than address our business with her, for which she was already 30min late. She demonstrated zero sense of professionalism nor even simple self-awareness of etiquette. Corrine seemed to have no recollection of our email conversation, where I specified my need to use the arena, and why. She just tried to upsell us on the $375 party room the whole time when she never explained in emails that this was an added fee to more than triple the arena cost, and almost double my entertainment budget! I told her we were already spending $500 on entertainment and would only be interested in the arena and could use the adjacent park pavilion 100' away. She kind of blankly looked at me, then agreed to that. But it felt like bs given how forgetful and unprofessional she already showed herself to be. Unfortunately I was correct because I sent her a follow-up email later that same day to book the arena, and I never heard back from her again. Corrine wasted a bunch of my time in emails that made zero sense and were full of false promises. She further wasted half my Saturday with a trip out there for nothing. I understand the horse biz isn't run on corporate conduct, but transparency, respect for others' time, and manners apply to any business, and it is completely lacking here.

If you're lucky enough to own a horse, you're able to board them there for a monthly fee. Otherwise there are pony rentals and rides (for little kids, for sure), and riding lessons available. The set up utilizes some horse facilities from the Jeffords estate. Horse culture at this location dates back to the turn of the 19th C. and has links to Samuel Riddle, breeder of Man O' War and other famed racehorses. Boarding is available here with beautiful paddocks. There are 40 acres of pasture for grazing. There is a brand new enclosed ring that was built about a year ago. Also a heated tack room, and washing area (outside). We notice that horses are always blanketed when it is cold out, and they always look lively and content. In addition to boarding, they offer beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons, horse education ("hands-on"), pony rides, and parties. Often people host birthday parties at the nearby park picnic area with playground, and enjoy pony rides as part of the party. To visit and exercise your horse, there is a separate horse trail adjacent to the horse farm, just across Gradyville Road. North of Gradyville Rd the trail is roughly a figure 8 shape, & is the longest trail overall (4.7mi) for the park, and the only one equestrian-accessible. This is the widest unpaved park trail, since it is for horses. Note that walkers & dogs also use this trail, and populate it more than horses. A large northern section of the trail abuts Edgmont Country Club golf course, & the green's activities can be observed from the trail.
