Dodged a nightmare! Main points: - Overcharges for meds by 4X normal price - Long waiting time (you may wait for 2 hours without knowing what is going on) - Will try to pull as many of your dog's teeth when not necessary for a quick buck. - Not affordable - They lie about the current standing health of your animal to upsell you on unnecessary procedures My girlfriend and I brought our beloved dog, Shout, to Afford A Vet for a normal tooth cleaning. We had to pay for a mandatory checkup. At this checkup, they overcharged basic pet meds by 4X of what they're sold on Chewy. From that checkup, I spent $170 to get told we should schedule for dental cleaning & a box of pills that cost $12 that I should have bought elsewhere. I was then told would have to pay an additional estimated $1,700 for his dental work in a month. They said he would have to get around 10 teeth pulled!! Over the span of that month, we felt like terrible owners even though our dog was very happy. We went to Mission Vet Clinic in Kent to get a second opinion and the total was $350 with no teeth needing to be pulled, and no mandatory checkup scam. His teeth are very healthy! Save yourself the headache and DO NOT bring your animal here. They will try to exploit the sentimental attachments you have with your animal & permanently alter their appearance for a huge profit! Afford A Vet is a scam of a practice, and should not be in business; I'll never bring my dog or any future pet there again. If they deny any of this then I'll find the quote sheet and update the review.

So, as I scroll through the previous reviews, I'm a bit surprised to read the negative comments. I've been here a few times for our family dog, and now, for two of our kittens... and I gotta say... I have had nothing but great customer service. We came here, on potentially one of the Familia's saddest day, and had to put our beloved Thunder down. They staff was so gracious, understanding, and comforting. They allowed us time to grieve, with no pressure or hurry. They explained the process in detail and made sure we knew everything that they were doing all along the way. For that alone, I'm in full gratitude for their service. Since then, we have returned a couple of times for our kittens, and they've handled them with care and expertise. Never once did I see or hear any "rude" service from anyone, in the private rooms or in the lobby. Although, this place may not be a favorite of our fur babies, they've definitely earned our business and respect. The prices are decent, and I'm sure in comparison to other veterinary clinics, cheaper by most standards... but more importantly... their service has been great! I have no issues recommending this clinic to my family and friends. So... with that said... when your little companions are happy, they make you Happy!

Afford-A-Vet is not only very affordable but the staff are very professional, polite, and caring to your babies! I've taken my baby corgi, Bella here since i first got her at seven weeks, and now she's a healthy nine months old. I absolutely love coming here because the staff are warm welcoming and adore Bella! It makes me feel at ease when it's time to visit and i can put my trust in them. Today, I brought Bella to get spayed and the receptionist and veterinarian were very kind and thorough with explaining the procedure and price estimates. After leaving her there for seven hours I came back to the staff not wanting her to leave because they love and adore her! I was very glad the surgery went well considering she was in heat. I only hope that afford-a-vet gets an upgrade! More rooms for more furbabies, comfortable chairs in the waiting room, and just expanding their building! I only had one ok experience when i went during busy hours for Bella's vaccine shots and had to stand in the waiting room (because it was so packed) for about 45 minutes. Not too big of a deal, just try to avoid the busy hours! I highly highly recommend afford-a-vet!

They do not return phone calls or texts. The vets are great but they need better staffing or call management.

I see your price for dog teeth cleaning (dog is 4.5 yrs and 27 lbs) but there was a comment that made me nervous. Do you prices ($120) for teeth cleaning, include the anesthetic? Are there any other costs assuming no extractions?

A basic dental prophy starts at $89.00 for a dog that size. Assuming no extractions are needed, the only additional cost would be a penicillin injection, which prevents infection during the dental prophy. The cost averages around $16, but varies…

Their pricing for the feline spay surgery was reasonable, and procedure was pretty straightforward. Drop off the pet around 8-9am, and pick up around noon. There was a bit of a line during pickup because one of their machines was down, so they had to serve all customers AND answer the phone. It must've been quite busy for them. They gave detailed instructions for aftercare, as well as the pain & antibiotic medicine. I think we found our kitty's new regular vet. :)

One of the most traumatic and negligent veterinary experiences I've ever had…read more I trusted this clinic with my dog's life, and that trust was profoundly misplaced. Over the course of treatment, they performed four surgeries that were later confirmed to be unnecessary, putting my dog through repeated anesthesia, pain, and recovery for no legitimate medical reason. Their lack of proper diagnosis, poor judgment, and complete disregard for the physical toll on my dog nearly cost her her life. At no point were we given clear explanations, alternative options, or convincing medical justification for why surgery after surgery was supposedly required. Each procedure created more complications, more suffering, and more fear. What makes this unforgivable is that much of this could have been avoided with competent care, thorough diagnostics, and basic professional caution. Instead, we were met with confidence without competence, and reassurance that turned out to be dangerously wrong. The emotional distress this caused our family -- watching our dog deteriorate because we followed professional advice -- is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. Veterinary care requires trust, and this clinic shattered it. I strongly urge pet owners to seek second opinions before consenting to any major procedures here. Had we done so earlier, my dog may have been spared immense pain and trauma.

The staff were all SO NICE. The hospital itself was clean and organized! The vet tech (I don't know if she told us her name but she was amazing), and Dr. Murdock was straight to the point, patient, quick and both made sure we left with a clear solution (and different ones if others things would've happened). The pricing wasn't bad at all, we ended up getting 50% off our first exam too. For calming meds, probiotics/diarrhea meds + the first wellness exam ended up being a little over $100. We're glad we established care here! We will keep the review updated as we continue our services with them.

Bonnie at their clinic understood the problem right away, checked with the doctor to make sure what we wanted to do was safe for Pippa, got her in the next day, and worked with the kennel to make sure they got what they needed. What a relief. They were so kind and so professional. We are going to keep them as our regular vet from now on.

A couple of months ago I brought Millie in for her routine annual exam and Dr. Prater identified a dental issue which hadn't yet led to anything I was able to notice, and in addressing that a sinus tumor was identified. With limited treatment options available I opted to allow things to take their course, and over the last few weeks as the tumor grew and began to impact her activities and bring us back to the practice more often the staff was very kind and compassionate. Yesterday was her final appointment after her quality of life had decreased to where she was simply waiting on her body to stop. The staff had everything setup for us, the room was ready when we got there so no awkward waiting next to someone bringing in their new kitten or puppy. The paperwork was pre-filled, just needing me to make my final decision on how to handle her remains and sign. They were incredibly kind and compassionate, there was no rush whatsoever, and they made sure I was as involved in the process as I wanted to be. She fell asleep in my arms and passed on peacefully while I was holding her. I couldn't ask of anything more for the experience.

My 11 year old pitty, Thor has been a patient at VCA Covington since 2015 and is extremely anxious and fearful of many things, including visits to the vet. Dr. Walls has always done everything possible to make his visits as low-stress as possible. Most recently, Thor needed surgery to remove a mass from his tail. Dr. Walls was incredibly compassionate and communicated very clearly about my options, helping me think through a decision that wasn't easy to make. I never felt rushed or pressured. I also had questions about the cost of the surgery before moving forward. I received a call right away, my questions were answered thoroughly, and the explanation of the estimate made sense. I was able to bring Thor in for surgery feeling comfortable with both the plan and what I could expect financially, without worrying about unexpected costs appearing afterward. Having a veterinarian I trust with a dog who is so difficult to treat means a great deal to me. I'm very grateful to Dr. Walls and the VCA Covington team for the compassion they've shown Thor and me over the years.

Twelve years ago, as a severely underweight 2-year-old, she ran away from a meth house that was breeding her to sell her kittens (crazy story), finding us several miles away at the Yardarm after crossing Kent-Des Moines Road. (The burgers they grilled there obviously smelled really good!) She moved in with us and we took her to Dr. Onorati after we'd been to another vet that we didn't get a great vibe from. As we left with her that first time, Dr. Onorati thanked us for taking such good care of her. The kindnesses continued over time as we brought her back many times for regular care and emergencies - when she pulled a thigh muscle chasing a cat out of her yard like the bad-ass she was, when she cut herself on the sharp barbs of a fence she hopped over, when she got folded into the automated machinery as we lowered a garage door we didn't realize she was lying on top of, and more. She was 8 pounds of sass and awesomeness. Last month she developed a massive infection that did not respond to intensive treatment, and we ultimately made the decision to help her say good-bye. The doctors, the assistants, the technicians, and the front desk folks were all just incredibly kind to her and to us as we navigated the past month and the end. We are so grateful to each of them. As I spent lots of time there, I had the opportunity to witness the attention and care all the animals (and their people) coming in and out received. Very frustrating to take a day off of work and go through the hassle of getting the cats there only to be told they can't be seen. Things like this do happen, so we rescheduled for one week later, only to have the exact same thing happen!! We did at least get a call this time to tell us that no doctor would once again be coming in, but with less than 24hrs of notice. It is beyond frustrating to schedule two different days off of work to make a trip to the vet only to be told that sorry we don't have anyone that can help you. Needless to say we will be going to a different vet, that can hopefully keep up their end of the bargain. The lady working the front desk when we went in for the first failed appointment was at least nice, but beyond that this has been an awful experience.
