This whitewashed inn accessed over an old packhorse bridge claims to 'probably' be Yorkshire's oldest (1307). Got to love them covering themselves for inaccuracy there. That's over seven centuries of beery goodness which was open for trade 40 years before the Black Death! A gem of a building with wooden beams throughout - the layout inside is stepped as it's built on a decline so disabled access is obviously limited (you may wish to phone in advance if you or your family member has any mobility concerns). There's plenty of seating throughout, however, with some set back in nooks in the walls. As well as serving real ale from independent brewers, they stock genuine imported lagers from around the world. Their fridge of bottled beers looked quite comprehensive. They also have guest beers which change regularly - when I visited they had Jaipur from Thornbridge on (one of my all time favourites). They serve food but we didn't eat here on this occasion. I can guarantee I will be a punter here again when I'm over next time.

Round the corner and to the back is the pool table room where I've enjoyed beating my good friend on many occasions. They have seating to the front and in a small garden to the back, plus a small car park. It's a nice tidy pub, with friendly staff and fairly good beer. Don't remember it ever going quiet when I, a stranger, walked in.

It has…read morechanged from being a disastrous, dirty, inhospitable and uncared for establishment to a clean, inviting, warm and friendly environment. The area outside, at the immediate rear, has been decked and covered over and the car park has been improved immensly. There is a childrens play area and it is very evident that this is a family friendly pub. The food is from a well balanced, unpretentious and reasonably priced menu and is always spot on. It's hard to resist a delicious beef baguette with gravy and real chunky home made chips! As well as providing a great place to drink and eat, The Flying Ferret is making a difference in Shelley as a place to meet and is doing great fund raising for various local charities. Thank you to all involved for making the time and effort to make that difference!

As a vegetarian there was an extremely limited choice. Two starters (both pastry) I chose a mediterranean veg pasty. this was very bland (forgot seasoning?) also very soggy with a great handful of green leaves and a watery spoonful of tomato sauce (it may have been just sieved tomatoes as there was no taste to it). for the main I had the other starter which was a goats cheese and caramelised onion tart, again with a handful of lollo rosso this time which is very bitter. (This tart was also very soggy) The veg (expensive extra charge) was very poor and the servings tiny. Never mind I thought the puddings might be better. No - a rock hard slice of cold treacle tart with ice cream. Sorry I won't go back. I don't mind the cost but expected the food to be good. The chef had offered to do a mushroom rissotto but as this takes a long time to cook and requires one to one attention I suspected it may not be fresh. Can anybody tell me of a restaurant that serves both non-veg (for husband) and interesting vegetarian for me.
