I've often wondered about that large birdlike sculpture along NC 55. Today I stopped to get a…read morebetter view and found more than I was expecting. I had no idea this was a landscape business where the emphasis is on Japanese style landscaping and gardening. Adding that it also deals in natural rock sculptures is too obvious I suppose, given the name of this business and that large bird thing out by the road. Although it's probably too early in the year to get the full effect of the Japanese garden in various forms the landscape owners have built here, there was still enough green to see how the style incorporates the natural elements in the flora, water, stones and rocks. The display incorporates the elements into different styles to give a taste of how it works to evoke the beauty and simplicity. Sprinkled around are the stone sculptures. There are areas containing ponds, birdbaths, or free flowing water -- some with bamboo -- stone walkways and stone statues, and benches. This is certainly worth a visit, if you're looking for inspiration, but you may not get the full effect until later in the spring.

Tucked away on a side road that's nearer to civilization than it appears from the map, Salem Garden…read moreand Gift shop offers a selection of plants and gifts in quiet, almost rural setting. I spent about a half hour, but could have spent more, perusing the late season plants and arrangements. Despite the cold weather, the late season plants held up really well. I saw a white potted kale plant that would be a pretty accent piece in an arrangement. I kept returning to look at it, wondering if it was meant for eating or decoration, and decided decoration. Definitely decoration. Some of the pre-potted arrangements were cute in their burlap wrapped pots. Very creative and yet very simple. The plants were well marked and prices easy to find. What I noticed right away was how reasonably priced things were. I can't believe I've never stopped here before. I've driven by it lots of times and have seen it overflowing with plants and vegetables and people and cars. Now I know why. Salem Garden can accommodate the do-it-yourself gardeners and those who prefer others to handle the garden maintenance and landscaping. There's a small house on the property holding gifts such as candles from beeswax and soy as well as bags made from recycled plastic shopping bags and some jewelry and artwork. The hours vary by season but if you see something you absolutely must have, the owners have thoughtfully left instructions on the front door on how you can get what you need. Because there are always those who take advantage, you'll have to stop by and see for yourself how they accomplish it.

Multiple staff members have ignored me while standing around talking to each other, and when I finally asked for help, they seemed annoyed and uninterested. I won't be returning and wouldn't recommend this nursery to anyone. I would gladly drive twice the distance to visit another nursery in the future.
