We had a bad experience here. My daughter called me from college and told me that a man at this business verbally quoted her $1100 for an oil change and a 4 wheel disk brake job. This prompted me to drive 4.5 hours one way to see just 'what was what' at this shop... In their defense, one caliper did need to be replaced (as one wheel's brake was 'metal on metal'), the 4 rotors needed to be replaced (along with pads), and one stud/lug nut was cross-threaded. My daughter is a 20 year old who 'calls em like she sees em'. All I know for certain is that she didn't like this place. I told him 'not everyone in Clinton is rich' during a civil 'one on one' conversation outside. I asked him rhetorically, "With all due respect, $1100 for brakes??; What do you think the car is worth, $2000?" He replied, "Well, maybe a little more than that." He shrugged his shoulders and went back inside. It is a 12 year old very common sedan. I took the car elsewhere, on the outskirts of an east coast city... It turns out that the car also needed a new lower control arm (it had a cracked bushing), badly needed new spark plugs, and needed a new oil sender unit (which was leaking a lot). ALL of this additional work (plus all of the work quoted) was completed for $1000 elsewhere, (Parts and labor fully warranted, licensed mechanic, done within 24 hours) Do the math & good luck in selecting your repair shop. read more

I've had several of my vehicles into C.A.S for service-Maintenance, repair, and even body work. All work was done when promised, the work was first rate, the prices were as agreed upon. Popped in with little notice on a Friday morning, having driven up from NJ and noticed a smell and smoking that I couldn't place. They took me in with a smile, put the car on the lift and diagnosed the problem as leaking transmission lines. We had a heart to heart discussion about the repair - possibly upwards of $800 if the radiator had to be replaced (because the trans hoses might be too rusted in the radiator ports) and the tight turnaround to get parts etc overnight. We opted to go all in and try to get the hoses out with only Friday afternoon and Saturday morning to pull off the repair before I was due to head back to NJ. They were enjoyable to work with, and I could tell they have a great rapport with the locals who came through during the day. Bottomine - the hoses were replaced without replacing the radiator and I got back on the road as I had planned on Sunday. My own local mechanic in NJ said they'd done a good job too. read more

I have a 20 year old car, I have been here many times in the past 3 years. Maybe 5-10 times. For oil changes, tires, inspections, brakes. Things like this. Never anything too major. I love the guys that work there. They're very nice to me, and make me feel important. They even trust me to come back to make payments once or twice when I just didn't have the money. So they've been very helpful and I appreciate that. Most of the time the cost's are reasonable to me. Only one time so far have I thought maybe I got screwed a bit on the price I paid. But I considered the good they've done for me and figured hey, it's all even. So I'm still currently taking my car there when I have the choice of where to take it. read more

Unfair pricing. My car was towed less than a mile. I was charged $225.00 for the tow (around here, standard is around $80.00) then I was charged $55.00 storage fee PER DAY. The car was towed Thursday around noon, and I picked it up Monday morning, for a total of $556.80. They tacked on an extra day! It wasn't even there for more than 4 - 24 hour increments! I'm sure they'll have some excuse. Either way you look at it, prices like these for towing and storage are insane. This is local thievery. read more

I've been to Clinton Auto twice in the last few months so this review is an average of those two experiences. The first time I went I needed my inspection done and found a great deal on the back of a Hannaford receipt. That's about as suburban mom as it gets (and I am a college male), but a deals a deal so I went. Inspection went well except they addressed my perpetual check engine light and told me I needed a new water pump and catalytic converter. I got the water pump fixed because: no water to cool down the motor, no more car. The converter, however, I didn't get fixed because my mechanic from home told me that you can drive you car across country before a bad converter does anything bad to your car. The guys at Clinton Auto were upfront that it wasn't a necessary repair when I asked, so I ended up not getting that done. I appreciated their honesty and the whole experience was quick despite it going from inspection to part replacement. That was 4/5. The second time I visited was for serious body work after an accident. I came into the shop with busted up steering and damage to both driver side doors. The estimate I got back from the shop was 6800. My dad, his mechanic, and I were all shocked but figured that replacing two doors was a lot of labor and finding the parts for a 10 year old car would be tricky. I had to wait two weeks before work could be started because my insurance inspector had to drive out from Albany to check the car, so that delay wasn't Clinton Auto's fault. That said, they started work on a Monday and I told them that I would like the car back by the following Friday (so the end of the next week), but I could wait until the Monday after that (two full weeks) if they needed more time. They said that might be possible, but they would give me an update when they could. I called back the following Wednesday (10 days later) and was told the steering was fixed but that the door "parts were ordered" by someone not working on my car, which wasn't an encouraging sign. The next day I called and the mechanic, Brandon, told me they had prepped the car, the parts were in and it would be done "Monday or Tuesday." I told them that was great, and Monday would be perfect. Naturally Brandon started to back track a little and said he would try to get it done by then, but not to get my hopes up. If Monday was an unreasonable date, please don't even mention it. Especially when we've already discussed how I really need the car by Monday at the latest. The next day I got a voicemail from Brandon saying that because of some personal problems on the staff the car wouldn't be ready until Tuesday or Wednesday. This was disappointing, but by this point I was already suspicious of their timeline. Unfortunately because of the delay I had to go home to Long Island without my car and wait two weeks to get it back. The cherry on top of all of this is that Brandon didn't call me back until Friday (nearly 3 weeks after the got to go ahead to start work) telling me my car was ready to be picked up. First I was told Monday, then Wednesday, and then, without even an update on the status, Friday. This all felt sloppy and unprofessional. Nice customer service is appreciated, but it doesn't make up for constant delays. I just got my car back and while it's running smoothly there are a few more wrinkles. One, their estimate was off by 1400 dollars. I appreciate them over-estimating so I wouldn't get slammed later, but 1400 dollars seems like a pretty substantial margin of error to give, and considering the age of my car their 6800 dollar estimate made it possible that my insurance was just going to scrap the car and cut me a check for the value of it. Second, on a pettier note, my car came back without cup holders or my pre-set radio stations. I don't know how the hell these two things happened, but it was really the cherry on top of a fairly brutal experience. No cup holders, I mean what an accomplishment. This was a 1.5/5 experience. The guys at Clinton auto are very friendly and sincere people who are upfront and helpful about everything, but it seems that their auto body division could use some help in pricing/scheduling/execution. Go there for an inspection, not for body work. There are plenty of other places in the area that do that kind of work so shop around first, so you don't endure the same kind of continual disappointment I did. read more
