I had an ER visit followed by a 6-day hospital stay in 2023. The care was outstanding and I was…read morevery impressed (and healed!). Subsequently, both my wife and I have been going to the VHC out-patient pavilion for primary care and cardiology and have been impressed with the patient care and customer service. Our only complaint is with the business office. Our insurance coverage has changed twice during that period and attempts to update the policies online (both on website patient portals and VHC app) proved fruitless. We received bills with substantial balances because the old insurance was billed and rejected. We tried to send emails to the business office asking them to resubmit the bill to the new policy but nothing happened. No one responded and the bills remained outstanding. Eventually we called the business office and resolved the issue within minutes. It is very frustrating trying to fix billing issues and update insurance online when whatever is done seems to disappear into a black hole. It seems the only way to successfully interact with the business office is by telephone.

Came to the ER here very unexpectedly while in the area. I'm not from Virginia and had no idea what…read moreto expect. Cons: no live wait time on website, registration staff who truly DGAF, dirty waiting area Wait time: 2.3 hours just to get into an exam room (I was balled up in a corner in pain and begged for a blanket because it was cold inside and 50 degrees outside. They triaged me, took blood and urine and had me remain in the waiting room. Once I actually got into an exam room, things started to move more quickly. Care: Dr. Sidara was actually the saving grace here. He was incredibly nice and thorough, spoke to me with respect and care, and worked to address my issues as soon as possible. He was even able to pull info from past doctors visits, which included a slight ear infection and double checked my ears while I was there to make sure he didn't miss anything further. I won't go into all of the details of what he discovered, but had he not caught one thing in particular, I might still be in excruciating pain. What I didn't like is the fact that I was in an exam room for maybe 30 minutes, then they took me to get a CT. And once I finished the CT, I was not taken back to the exam room, but taken to the "results waiting" room. There, my IV hung in front of me, without being connected, for about an hour. When all of my results were back, the doctor returned to me and told me all the findings and the plan moving forward. I do wish they would have kept me overnight so that I could continue to be monitored and receive pain management medication, but I understand that's not necessarily typical treatment for what I was experiencing. Shortly after the doctor checked in with me, my discharge papers were drafted, and I was on my way out. I was there from 3:50-9 p.m. ish.

This place is wonderful. They truly care about the patient. I have always been told that if you…read morecould ever get into this hospital to go there, but I had no idea what a difference it really was from all the others. In the last thirteen years we have dealt with too many hospitals to count. They have been generally the same. Get the patient in; evaluate quickly; take them off of whatever medication their regular psychiatrist usually has them on; have a peeing contest, so to say, with their regular psychiatrist, to show who really is the physician, with no real concern for the patient; not wanting any information from those who are around them most often; shipping them out of the hospital as quickly as possible, most often before the medication has even taken effect, to a Rehab, Home, or Halfway house; just to start the process again with another patient. Then the cycle keeps repeating itself. Our experience with Dominion Hospital was nothing like this. Leslie, the Social Worker, or Dr. Zoe, the Psychiatrist, would call whenever they felt the need to get further information or to advise about something they were concerned about. It was never a five minute phone call either. We would speak for long periods of time trying to find a solution that would most likely benefit the situation at hand. I never had this type of experience in any other place. It was amazing. They definitely put their whole heart into it. I will also say, they were dealing with a very difficult situation. In all cases, it is the responsibility of the patient to want to make the changes and put in the hard work to get things done. I will just say, Dominion sets them on that track by giving them a great beginning. They try to get them on the correct medications; get them into the right treatment programs; and offers them wonderful support along the way. This hospital is outstanding! Thank you to everyone.

When we spoke to our daughter the next morning, she stated everyone was very nice. So I was feeling even better about the place...then we went and visited her the day after that and the staff was very friendly, our daughter said everyone was pleasant including her roommate. It's unfortunate that there are so many negative reviews, but please remember most go there UNWILLINGLY and are going to make this place seem horrible! Our experience was quite the opposite and our daughter was treated VERY WELL and received the initial help she needed! Thank you Dominion and Staff!!!

After a doctor's visit, I can go to a lab to do my blood test and go to a pharmacy to get my medicines. Well let's start with when we signed up for KP and they said all my drugs…read morewere in their formulary and then once you sign up and are locked in for a year, that is when some Pharmacist calls you and tells you that several of the drugs you are on are "NOT" in their formulary and I should have gone to the some other book and on page 1872 it states that these three are not covered!! So one of these drugs was a blood thinner as I had a clot in my lower leg! Well after complaining constantly that I was not feeling right, and my feet were swelling up so bad I couldn't get a shoe on my foot!! Well this is when I decided to heck with this doc I am going to the ER!! Well Kaiser saved $8 on that blood thinner but then because I was developing blood clots, what they call Pulmonary embolism, then they had to do a Doppler imaging and 3 CT scans!! Oh and I had to go back on lovenox which is $1000 a shot!! When I was done with the 10 shots at two a day, I took back the five remaining needles and the pharmacy just threw them in the trash!! Then they put me back on my original blood thinner!! But that $8 savings took a bullet to the foot since the lovenox was very spendie!! Oh and I should add that all of this BS they never waived any copayments and I have had to pay them for the crappy thinner on their formulary that put me in this situation!! Kaiser sucks and I am stuck with these witless twits until January first! If you want to die by a thousand paper cuts then KP is the place! If you are an English speaking person you need several interpreters when you go because KP has a huge amount of non-English speaking help and when they say something to you and you do not understand them and say excuse me? They get upset with you because you do not speak whatever broken English they are trying to spew at you! This place is so worried about saving a few dollars that patient care suffers extremely! And then they wonder why people hate insurance companies!! If you have any choice, choose the other company because this place is horrible!! It is funny that they got bit so hard on the cost of that Lovenex!! It reminds me of an old saying; "Penny wise and pound (dollar) foolish! I should post some of the interactions between myself and one of the KP docs!! I would write this huge letter spelling out what was going on and her response to me was "Thank you for your concerns." What a piece of trash! Well I only have 7 months 14 days left of this hell! Insurance companies just turned a blind eye!! Shame on you Kaiser Permanente!

Later, Dr. Akl told me that he has his own private clinic and that he could do the tests there. I took an appointment at his travel clinic, but they quoted me $900-$1000, so I decided to return to the urgent care office since it was more affordable and we already had an agreed price. When the doctor saw me, he said: "You will pay $900 either here or there," implying that the decision was his, not mine. Honestly, the staff were very kind and cooperative, but this doctor's attitude was unprofessional, especially since there was already a price agreement at this clinic. When a patient is paying out of pocket, the final decision should always be the patient's, based on their budget and comfort -- not pressured into a more expensive option. Very disappointing experience. I will not be returning.
