At this point, I've been catching the train to and from Paterson for about a little over year or…read moreso. This station is your usual outdoor station stop on NJ Transit Main and Bergen lines. Nothing fancy. For detail, I recommend reading over Jeffrey D's Yelp review, which is good and provides thorough info. Trains on the Main/Bergen lines go directly to Hoboken. From the Paterson station, if you want to go to New York, you'll need to transfer at the Secaucus station (which is a major hub and has a bunch of amenities - bathroom, Dunkin, I think a bar, etc. There's a flight of stairs to the platform off of Market. The elevator is closer to Ward and by the underpass closer to the post office.

Paterson's one and only train station, served by New Jersey Transit's Main Line trains…read more(Hoboken-Suffern, NY), and rarely Port Jervis Line trains when it does local stops (Hoboken - Port Jervis, NY). A two track station serving the needs of local Patersonians & those in the area needing a local hop to other communities or a quick hop to Hoboken/New York or elsewhere, it's not used too often compared to the other stations in the network (such as those in the NE Corridor or Montclair-Boonton lines), seeing a slight increase in AM travel, before stabilizing for the rest of the day. The next stops are Hawthorne (north, 5 min ride), or Clifton (south, 5-7 minute ride), and depends on where you go, the end destination would be Hoboken (35 minutes, south), or New York Penn Station (45-55 minutes, south/east, after a transfer via Secaucus Junction). Depending on your end destination, prices can range from 2.25$ for a one zone trip (one or two stations like to Clifton/Hawthorne), 6,50$ to Hoboken, or 7,75$ to NYC, but from Labor Day (Sept 2018) until late January 2019, there's a 10% discount for trips due to maintenance & PTC upgrades, but tickets brought during this time must be used before they expire, same goes for MyTix/online passes. Fortunately most of the trains arrive on time, and rarely would you stumble upon overcrowding, unless if it's a weekend and/or reduced service times. The station is located at the edge of downtown Paterson & the entrance to the residential/small business areas (running above grade, historically it ran street level), running parallel to Railroad Ave, and above Market & Park Aves, and a short distance away from local areas such as downtown/Center City Mall (5-10 minutes of a walk), even in "walking distance" of the Great Falls, and close to PCCC & the city/county's offices (also within 5-10 minutes of a walk). There's two bus stations here (one alongside Market St, another alongside Ward St), with a mix of routes to NYC, routes to local towns, and within Paterson. The taxi stop is at the Market St side, and you'll usually find a taxi or two ready to take you to your destination, and Uber/Lyfts usually stop close by there too. There's two stairwells here, one on the Market St side, and another on the Ward St side, and the elevator is on the Ward St side. The train platform itself is open air, good for summer days & pleasant weather, but not so much for winter & chilly days, where there's no source of heating elements there, so at most riders would have to wait in horrid conditions. Unfortunately this station doesn't have an "official" parking lot so most people that come here on cars would park at the municipal parking garage across the street, for a good rate. If you've needed access to a phone, there's a payphone close by to the Ward St elevator, and fortunately it works. There are no food options within the station itself, so if you've wanted food, there's a large consortium of them in the area, ranging from chains such as Dunkin' & McDonalds, to local pizza joints, and a large number of small Dominican/Caribbean/Arabic spots to eat in, results may vary, or check on Yelp! In my personal experience, the station does seem woefully inadequate to be around, and in a dire need of some upgrades. Being the third largest city in the state, it does seem worrisome that this is the only station in the city (in the past it had more), whereas other commuter friendly cities such as Montclair would have 6 (even if they run "close" to each other). The station itself isn't in the brightest of neighborhoods, usually seeing homeless people camping out under the station's support beams, or loitering in nearby businesses. The elevator does seem filthy sometimes and with a questionable odor, and other times it runs "slow" I fear it might just sputter out one day! Rarely would one of the TVMs have an error with accepting cash, which would be an inconvenience to some commuters. The aforementioned issue with this station being (partially) open air does get problematic in winter since it leaves little in the way for people waiting to take the blunt of the cold/stormy weather, even a heating tower would've helped. A small bonus is that it does provide for some good views of the city during the evening, but it's not in a good spot to take sight of for a good while. Ending this, Paterson's NJ Transit station offers a decent way to leave/get into the city via rail and offers commuters who don't have access to a car a chance to travel/work/etc, but lacking amenities you'd find in other stations & being in an unsafe environment does leave much for the imagination. It'll always be around in one shape or another, so that's something to look forward to. Maybe next time?
