My family and I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Churchill for three nights. I cannot…read moresay enough kind things about this hotel. The staff is warm and welcoming, "special shout out to Ian", it was clean, the grounds were beautiful, the room was spacious, complimentary KitKats and beverages in the room daily, and great bathroom. A quick note on the subject of the bathroom; it was good size, had a tub with shower, great water pressure, plenty of hot water, and good quality complementary toiletries. There is a restaurant onsite serving delicious woodfired cooked pizzas with great service. The bar was warm and welcoming with attentive staff and lively conversations. On top of everything else it is a nearly perfect location. You are a quick walk from the train station and the center of town where all of the attractions are located. This hotel does not have AC in the rooms but it is York so usually that would not be much of a problem but when we visited it was a heat wave. That being said they did give us a fan and it was really not that bad because it stayed reasonably cool as well as it cooling more at night. In short I cannot recommend this hotel enough and we look forward to hopefully staying there again if we are so fortunate.

Grand Hotel & Spa - The Grand, York

    Grand Hotel & Spa

This is a lovely hotel in an excellent location. The concierge and valets were outstanding-helpful,…read moreattentive, and very personable. The one gentleman shook all of our hands as we left which was so nice. We had breakfast at the Rise twice, very good, and dinner once, which was good though only as one server was working our side of the busy dining room, it was slow. We stayed in the modern wing in a family room which was spacious and lovely. In terms of negatives, the mattress was hard and lumpy, and there was the only one small hook to hang towels and robes, so not much room for our party of three. I mention this because the Grand has a sustainability focus and encourages guests to re-use towels, which we did: more hooks are needed. The reading lamps on the headboard did not work. The major problem we had was the temperature of our room: the thermostat read 16 but it was more like 20; too warm for sleeping. I called down to reception and concierge and there was no answer - multiple times - I think perhaps the phones were malfunctioning. I reached an operator who said she'd leave a note as she was leaving in five minutes. I went down to the front desk and the staff member told me she could adjust it from a control panel in the lobby (?), however, the room stayed too warm. This definitely took away from the experience as I didn't sleep well and expected better from a five star hotel. Lastly, and this is small, but the greenery out front (topiaries and flowers) and in the hallways are plastic, again, not five star. For a hotel focused on sustainability, natural plants would be much more suitable.

Ask for an upgrade. Rooms are SMALL. VERY SMALL. The concierge is simply AMAZING and can help you…read morewith all your needs. Very VERY attentive and multitasking. The hotel is old and overwhelmingly big, but the location couldn't be better and the buffet breakfast with their beetroot smoked salmon was something we are STILL talking about. One of the spa employees was a real ditz, killing a star off the review. But on another visit, we had a tour of the vault, because my curious george husband HAD to see it (that is where the manicures happen). Upgraded room was super spacious and made for a lot of comfort with all the ammenities that make a "getaway" vacation special!

Carpet in this room was stained and filthy. it was also loose from the floor. Second room was larger, but also worn and tired with equally stained carpet. Outlet on bathroom did work. Included breakfast was just OK. this hotel needs a complete renovation to bring it up to Doubletree standards

DoubleTree by Hilton York is one of four Hilton branded properties in the city, this is one of the…read moremost reasonably priced hotels out of the four (even compared to some of the new built Hamptons), with room rates often available for between £50 and £70. The location at Monks Bar is especially good, it is a short walk away from the city centre's shops, restaurants and historic sights. There is also parking right outside the hotel, which can be reserved in advance. It is a fairly small hotel, so there is only limited availability for upgrades, they have three floors in the main building, there is also a building opposite the main hotel with some rooms located. Check-in is usually from 16:00, with check-out at 12:00 but I had no problem with both an early check-in and a late check-out. The best of both worlds! PRO TIP: The "Accessible Rooms" are amongst the best in the hotel, they are much more spacious with some being located on the Ground Floor opposite the main hotel building, I love how quiet they are as there's no lobby/hallway for people to pass meaning they're pretty much noise-free. I have stayed at the hotel on two occasions now and I have been impressed with the comfort of my room it is one of the most homely hotels I have ever stayed in, it has modern features without sacrificing the fact that it is located in an old building in a historic Roman city, the juxtaposing features of the hotel make it a relaxing, comfortable hotel that feels like you are in a home, rather than a hotel. The facilities inside the room were good, while there wasn't a desk, they did have a table, plenty of plug sockets (including two sockets on each side of the bed with USB charging) and a huge, modern TV. I also appreciated how the TV was on a stand, rather than a wall, meaning I could move it closer to the bed and access the HDMI port to connect my fire stick. The staff at the hotel seemed friendly and accomodating to the requests I had, such as late checkout and a fridge, even though they don't keep any in the rooms, they should be able to provide one on request. The double blinds were especially useful and blocked out the light, combined with how quiet the room was, I was able to relax and have a good nights sleep. I was unable to get hot water out of the bathroom tap and the shower's max temperature was not very hot at all, these weren't dealbreakers for me as I was only staying at the hotel for one night. 5* - The hotel offers a very good standard of rooms, service which many hotels even at a premium rate can not match, they deliver all this while also remaining reasonably priced. I look forward to returning when I visit York again.
