In the past a prong had broken and been repaired by another jeweler, but recently the ring broke again and needed repair. I didn't want to return to the previous place so I looked far and wide for a reputable jewelry repair person. Because the ring is over 100 years old and the setting is complicated, I wasn't sure that it could be repaired. I kept it in a box and was sad that I couldn't wear it. After consulting lots of recommendations and reviews, one jeweler really stood out in terms of customer happiness: Emerald Jewelers in Salem, in Tuscan Village. I brought my ring in last week and was greeted by very kind staff who made me feel really comfortable. Charly the owner is clearly an expert at what he does: he gave his honest assessment and several repair open options and offered several price points. He also noted that the ring was a half size too small and my wedding ring was a half size too large, and ordered to size and refinish both. I went with the more extensive repair and I'm extremely happy that I did. The band was replaced and stones reset in the intricate settings which were rebuilt The rings are white gold and they were also refinished with rhodium plating. All of this took many hours of work, but my rings were ready in less than a week. I was astonished when I picked them up: they retained the same antique style and design but they looked brand new! I'm sure my ring has not looked so beautiful in 100 years. The band is much thicker and wider, and both rings fit perfectly and look amazing together now that they're the correct sizes. I can't believe this is the same ring! I noticed that the store had many beautiful items for sale as well, and that Charly took the time to really talk to every customer who came in: several seemed like repeat customers and I can certainly understand why. They would be ready in time for the graduations. I chose a setting displayed in the store that was thick, heavy gold. My husband's ring had 12 diamonds, 3 in each setting. I asked Charlie the cost and I agreed. When I picked up the rings, I was in shock!!!!! They were literally the quality of bubblegum machine setting with obvious much smaller diamonds than my husband's ring..... They denied it all, fast talked me in my state of grief as I had just lost my husband.... I left the store horrified. I called and left a message on their voicemail when I got home. Crying. I said I would be embarrassed and ashamed to give our sons these rings.... I was told I couldn't prove they switched diamonds because they were not "certified " and I had no proof. I took the appraisal from my husband's ring with the specifications to another jeweler. He confirmed the diamonds in the rings were not from my husband's ring. They were significantly smaller with less quality. After weeks of going in the store and battling with them, they beat me down.... I was heartbroken and grieving the loss of my husband of 48 years .... I was not in a mental or financial position to fight them in court. I settled to get my money back.... There was no compensation for the sentimental value of my husband's wedding ring....... I will NEVER trust another jewelry or business person..... There are more awful details to this story...
