My stay at the Oak Villa was a bit of a whim as I was only looking for someplace to rest up after a…read moretrip up to Leeds to visit the Royal Armoury and attend a seminar there that same evening. I was hoping for an inn with some character. The Villa has that. The hotel, as Ariela M. mentioned in her review, impresses more from the road than within. If anything has been done at the Oak Villa since her 2009 review, I couldn't see it. The interior is firmly stuck somewhere between 1979 and 1983. Dusty rose colored bathroom fixtures, pretty unpleasant patterned utility carpet throughout, and the stiffest bed that I've every slept on (imagine a pullout sofa bed where you simply cannot avoid sleeping on one of the support bars). The feel was very "flophouse-ish", The flat screen television would only play internet radio, and the rumor of limited wifi was just that. Breakfast was standard (but not full) Engilsh and served hot and quickly. Cold cereal options were available for those inclined. While it didn't impact me, the serving time seemed short (this may be no more than my limited experience with British B&Bs) and would have annoyed me if I was traveling for business. On the pro side, the Oak Villa is on the number 19 bus route, and is an inexpensive 10 minute taxi ride making it easy access to the train station. I can't recommend the Oak Villa as it stands today. Equally far from awful as quite good, a little effort to freshen the facility would go a long way to making this a great place to take your ease.

A couple of weeks before she came up, I went to the Oak Villa Hotel to get a quote for 2 nights. Set back from the road, yet right on the corner of the 'mini roundabout' at the Cardigan Road/Victoria Road junction, from the outside it is an impressive and large old building. The house, teamed with the grand name choice raises expectations, prompting those approching it to gear themselves up to be blown away by a truely awe-inspiring, aesthetic triumph upon entry. Too much? Perhaps. But to be honest, the reality is a bit of a let down, and sadly verging on the polar opposite. Privately run, I entered a gloomy foyer, with a small bar on the left with a few men local men curiously sipping on their pints. Greeted by a timid girl, who appeared to be lurking in the shadows I asked for a quote on a 2 night stay, she then vanished for 5 minutes, leaving me to hover in the entrance hall. The decor and furnishings were ever so dated, and I couldn't help but feel that the place really could have done with a facelift. When the girl eventually returned she said that the owner was away, and that they would call me later to confirm a price for the 2 nights. Sure enough, later on I received a phonecall, and at about £20-£30 a night (bed and breakfast), I booked a room for my mum. When she stayed, I went to her room. Perfectly acceptable, her room had a dresser, wardrobe, single bed and a kettle. Unlike some of her other lodgings in Leeds, there was a communal shower/toilet area, but due to the fact one person could use it at a time, and the fact there were few other guests made it technically her own en suite, as it was just next door to her room. Durning her stay, the girl I mentioned above was the only other person my mum saw, other than a couple at breakfast (which the girl cooked herself). This beckons me to ask whether the owners have entrusted this girl to run their hotel, without giving her the freedom to set quotes, and really have a say in what is going on with the business.. The prices, though very reasonable, seem changeable and 'haggle-able', depending on the customer. Although perfectly comfortable, there was something I found incredibly eerie about the place, despite my mother seeming content and unphased by the entire experience and just grateful for a bed!

The location is fabulous, a short walk or cab ride from the train station and right at the heart of good shopping and eating and residence at the hotel gives you access to the gym at The Light. The hotel is housed in a stunning deco-themed space and the rooms here are extremely well-equipped and spacious bordering on the obscene if you're a single business traveller. Staff are polite, efficient and helpful, which is all you can ask for. In terms of refreshments there are options for eating and drinking in your room or at the hotel bar and restaurant, I've found both options to be perfectly good, although if you have the time please venture further afield!

The hotel is in the heart of Leeds making it perfect for exploring the city. Although it was very busy, the check in was good, fast and efficient and the staff were friendly and helpful. The room we had was small but very classy and had everything we needed. It was stylishly decorated and very clean and tidy with all the usual facilities you expect. There was a mini bar which as per usual was ridiculously overpriced so we steered clear! After having a lovely meal in Leeds we came back and sat in the bar and had a few drinks. Once again, the staff were happy and friendly and mad sure we had everything we needed. The bed was very comfortable and breakfast the next morning was very nice. I can recommend this hotel for anyone stayin for either business or pleasure and should we go to Leeds again I would definately choose the Radisson.

The Queens Hotel is a pub/bed and breakfast that looked big and cosy so i thought I'd give them a try. On entering, I was stared at slightly suspiciously (however, this may have been due to my bright red coat, bright yellow boots, and bright ginger hair) and I did feel a little uncomfortable. It was very quiet, and their were some local men propping up the bar as like in many traditional pubs in Leeds. I felt I had disturbed the peace a little, but it was warm, big and cosy as predicted so I just got on with ordering my coffee. The drink was £1.20 and delicious, (much better than my over milky Morrisons cafe disaster the other day) and it came with one of those straw shaped biscuits with the swirly chocolate inside. Mmm. Perfect and exactly what I needed. The interior of the place was very dated, like most of Moorley, but I found it charming. With thick floral carpets covering the floor and even the base of the bar, it felt warm and cocooned. Pictures and decorative bits and bobs covered the walls and beams which made it feel balanced and inhabited, but not cluttered or too busy. Drinks wise, I noticed that they do a small selection of red and white wines, bottles priced at £8.50 each, a huge selection of spirits around 2.10 a single, and the mainstream beers and bitters on tap. As for the Bed and Breakfast, I haven't stayed here but the website tells me that it is £18 per night per person or £22 pnpp including an evening meal. I have included a photo of the upstairs area for you to see. The kitchen is open Tuesday - Saturday 11am till 2pm and they do a senior citizens lunch deal of £3 between 11am and 12pm.

The reception and function areas are quite grand, but the bedrooms could do with a bit of a revamp. Still, there was a nice view of City Square and the proximity to the train station is obviously a bonus. Mum was in a twin room, which had two quite large single beds and all the amenities you'd expect from a hotel room - TV, coffee and tea making facilities and the bathroom was quite nice too. Quite a nice place all in all.

Set in a refurbished manor house from the eighteenth century, it is now a popular place for weekend breaks due to it's tranquil location, stunning surroundings and private golf course. It is also a favourite venue for conferences and weddings, amongst other special occasions. I recently went to a relative's wedding reception here and I was stunned by just how luxurious and elegant everything about Oulton Hall is. The decor is traditional yet has a contemporary twist, while the service is professional. The food and drink itself would not have been out of place in a Michelin starred restaurant, while the function room later served to be an excellent dancefloor. As for the hotel itself, I stayed just one night, but that was enough to make me want to go back. The rooms are furnished classically and come with everything you'd expect from a five-star establishment - television, en-suite bathroom, breaktaking view - and the beds are unbelievably comfortable. There is, of course, an excellent swimming pool and spa facilities, as well as an upmarket restaurant and bar on the ground floor. I would recommend Oulton Hall to anyone who wishes to have a weekend away without leaving Leeds - the only drawback, as you'd expect from a five-star hotel, are the prices.

Breakfast is always one of the highlights. Great selection and top quality food on offer; the temptation is always to try and turn it Into an eating competition. You get free use of the gym and pool, both of which are very small, but well equipped. They were never busy during the day when we used them, but I can imagine they are pretty cramped at peak times. Prices for additional food and drink are not cheap, but there are some great places to eat nearby, if you want to keep the costs down. Only ever had one problem with our room and the staff offered to switch us to another one immediately. It looks like the rooms have recently been refurbished; ours was a nice grey theme, with new HD TV. In general, the staff can't do enough to help either and always say hello when passing them in the corridors. Speaking of which, the carpets in the corridors are now starting to look shabby, with duck-tape covering various tears and splits right along the first floor - not a great first impression for a five star hotel. We have never had a problem with rowdy guests, or noisy kids during our stay, making them all the more relaxing. This place seems to attract professional people rather than large families or groups of teens; just as long as you don't mind a group of office-workers doing team building tasks in the grounds. While you feel like you are in the countryside, The location of the hotel is very close to major motorways, giving you loads of choice for day-trips, like shopping in Leeds or Wigan, or a great selection of National Trust venues and public houses. We have never done the same thing twice!
