The rest were just angels on earth caring for at risk babies. The food actually wasn't as bad as usual at hospitals you just have to navigate carefully LOL. All in all, I felt the maternity ward and NICU was warm and friendly. It was easy to park and go in and out of the hospital. Now the bill. It's exorbitant. I think 2 weeks of NICU was $479,000 LMAO I mean they have to just make this stuff up. Like there's a bowl of really horrible numbers and that's the one that got picked for me. I cannot fathom how someone without insurance can be faced with such a bill. But I digress about our healthcare system. Dr Greer and Dr Kaiser took great care of me and were super understanding and empathetic. Cathy in the NICU was a superstar human being. The hospital is beautiful and I felt cared for.

I was already extremely worried and emotional about his condition, so the way I was treated at the front desk made an already difficult situation even more stressful. I arrived around 2:00 PM and checked in to visit my brother. I was told to take a seat and that someone would call me in approximately 15 minutes. My older sister was already at the hospital and had been able to see my brother. At the time, we were told that he was unconscious and unable to speak or respond. When I checked in, one of the front desk employees told me that my brother was responsive and that visitors were not being allowed at that time. I was confused because we had been told only about 20 minutes earlier that he was unconscious. When I respectfully asked how his condition had suddenly changed, I felt that I was met with an unnecessarily rude and dismissive attitude. I understand that emergency departments are extremely busy, and I understand that staff have policies they need to follow. However, I believe family members deserve compassion, patience, and clear communication especially when they are dealing with a loved one in a serious medical situation. I also needed to request a doctor's note to excuse my brother from work because of his hospitalization. Rather than feeling supported, I felt as though my questions and requests were an inconvenience. Each time we approached the front desk for updates, we felt that the staff appeared annoyed or bothered by us asking questions about our own family member. I am not asking for special treatment. I am asking for basic compassion and communication. When a family member is hospitalized and their loved ones are frightened and unsure of what is happening, the last thing they should have to deal with is feeling dismissed or spoken to disrespectfully. I hope the hospital will take this feedback seriously and remind front-desk staff that their communication and attitude can have a significant impact on families during extremely difficult moments. We were already scared and worried about my brother's health, and we should not have been made to feel like a burden for wanting information and trying to support him. My one note is that it can feel like the patients are put through an assembly line so you might have to speak up to get extra attention on your exercise form or discuss what's working or not in the program. Very easy to call in to make an appointment or change it. The office also helped me deal with an insurance snafu. There's parking in the back but all the spaces are reserved for specific businesses so you may have to do street parking even if it looks like there are open spaces.

I have had plenty of other injuries in the past and this one has definitely been the slowest to heal and quite limiting in terms of going through daily lifestyle tasks. Finding a facility for physical therapy was a bit challenging. Many in my area had no reviews, or even worse, negative reviews. The facility which my doctor recommended did not even return my call for a consultation. I decided to take a chance on Mariners, which is established in Orange County, but new to this location. Upon my first consultation, I felt very comfortable there. It is organized, clean and professional. Service is great. They process your insurance claims, which I am finding several places do not do. The therapists are very knowledgeable and just pleasant - positive. They share duties so you may interact with multiple therapists and aides in one session. Most importantly I am seeing progress with my mobility and flexibility with their treatments. They add and remove exercises each week, so it is not monotonous. In the past I have had PT that involves lots of manual massage (which I love) and I've had some sessions where the therapists spend two-three minutes with you then send you to a roller table the rest of the time. Mariners definitely has substantive treatment the whole hour or so you are there. The only thing I would prefer is more of a massage component as it is a bit painful to just jump into exercises. They do however, do stretches with you before the exercise component. I would also like to see a more formalized program of at-home exercises to do. In the past I have received these plans with diagrams and instructions. I had to ask about at-home exercises after several weeks of treatment since none were offered to that point. Aside from those small matters, I do have lost of confidence in Mariners and will continue to work with them.
