Collective Roots Community Garden

hubby surprised me with a cheese making 101 class at collective roots this weekend. didn't know…read morethat this place existed in east palo alto and must admit was a little wary of the location, but once we got there it felt like we were at someone's private residence. there is a beautiful garden with herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, chicken coop with hens and roosters, and beehives! we made 5 different yogurts and cheeses in our short 3 hour class: -yogurt - went through the steps of yogurt making using culture from store bought yogurt -greek yogurt/yogurt cheese - let the yogurt drain and have a richer yogurt -cultured butter - yogurt culture in fresh butter -ricotta - super easy to make and enjoy -mozzarella - fresh mozzarella in 1 hour the class was enjoyable, we got to meet lots of new people and learned a lot about local produce and cheese making. the best part was using the fruits, herbs, and honey right from the grounds of collective roots! nothing like fresh, local produce. great experience...can't wait for cheese making 102!

Ohlone Humane Society - Little guy stuck in this terrible glue trap

Ohlone Humane Society

I am so thankful to Kelly for helping me save a tiny bird!…read more Somehow a little bird got stuck on a rat glue board that was in my garage. I didn't see it until 4+ hours later. I was panicking and didn't know what to do! Called San Ramon PD, Animal control, some wildlife rescues, 6-7 vets but no one was able to help me. I poured a lot of oil over the bird and was able to get his feet free, but I was too scared to do anything more. My SIL then left a message for Ohlone Humane Society. Kelly called her back right away and informed her that they will close in the next few minutes, but I can bring the bird to her house. Took me 30 min to go from SR to Fremont - kept checking on the bird to make sure he was alive! Kelly was able to remove the bird from the trap in just about a minute. The bird was ready to fly away but Kelly said she will keep him for 2-3 weeks or until he grows his feather back and then release him. I am soo glad Kelly called us back right away; she was his only hope. Thank you Kelly for going out of your way to save the little guy!

I can trap and do it myself there are 2 feral cats tipped ear and an older kitten out here being physically abused by a neighbor here . Kitten I may be able to get without trap. The 2 others no. I have placement for all of them and I am their feeder and I'm moving.

They SAVE video recordings of all your therapy sessions! wth!?…read more(This is another example of "guinea pig therapy", where your traumatizing life experiences are primarily for the benefit of interns to get clinical training hours. But you know, it's passed off as a super helpful nonprofit, as that gets the funding flowing in!) I was referred to this place by a previous therapist who was extremely awesome and helpful. I have nothing against therapy, and have known great organizations and therapists in the past. I met my SAVE intake therapist over the phone (named Jacob P.) - He seemed like a perfectly nice guy. He tells me can see me any day of the week, that the scheduling is flexible, and that he'll send over some paperwork. I look over the paperwork, and I'm absolutely *stunned* to see language that requires me to consent to having all of my therapy sessions video recorded. Can anyone say "triggering"? Imagine yourself as a survivor of domestic violence and sexual abuse, having all your most intimate experiences recorded by complete strangers and viewed by a supervisor you've never even met! But don't worry, they say they delete the recordings after a short amount of time, so they can't be subpoenaed and shown in court. Sure, that makes me feel safer....not. I asked if this policy could be changed, and if they could provide a form that I wouldn't have to give my consent for this. Jacob said no, and after repeat requests has not provided a supervisor contact I can speak to abut the issue. Oh, and did I mention they also said phone call appointments are impossible during Covid? And that they are absolutely requiring me to use a video chat platform? This shows how little respect and care they have for notifying survivors or prioritizing their health. This is clearly a lot more about the "training" of the therapist intern, and not about supporting survivors of domestic violence. I recommend going elsewhere. and SAVE staff, if you're reading this, please let applicants know the therapy sessions will be video recorded when they are applying, so they don't have to wait weeks or months to find this out the way I did.

Shakira is amazing, Heather has more compassion and understanding then most. Kelly is just an awesome and understanding human being.... please remember for those who are reading this SAVE is not a miracle worker you have to do work yourself and want it you have to be away from your abuser and want it. Save will always help you with resources applications and do the best that they can I for one who wish to remain anonymous he was helped out and helped into a transitional so for the people who talked badly about save I think the problem is there's not saves. There are many many many lives that does save has helped and some of us like me have ended up in another domestic violence situation and still save is there they do not discriminate they do not talk badly about and they do not look down upon they are women whom I cannot say for certain but believe they've been where we've been and walked in our shoes so for those who don't know save if you need help reach out they will help you.

Sulphur Creek Nature Center - Turkey vulture

Sulphur Creek Nature Center

A small, but interesting nature center in Hayward, CA, similar to the Lindsay Wildlife Experience…read morein Walnut Creek, but this one is quite a bit smaller and more "wild" in that it's basically all outdoors. The animals we saw that were rescued, rehabilitated, and now permanently residing here were mostly birds, with some reptiles and bugs thrown in. We actually didn't interact with any staff while we were here in the early afternoon, but we did see a couple of them working. It's more of a self-tour type of place it seems, rather than a guided tour experience, so we just walked around and looked at the different kinds of animals. We saw several hawks, a few owls, some ducks and chickens, and then we went into this building the size of a small house which houses the reptiles and bugs. We saw snakes, lizards, and a few bugs. My kids got a kick out of seeing all the wild animals. It's also nice that they take in injured wild animals and rehabilitate them so they can live out their lives there or maybe they go to other nature centers or zoos if the opportunities come up, rather than end up not surviving in the wild. All in all, this nature center was pretty cool for a casual short visit and it's free so the price was right, a good way to spend some time in the "wilderness."

We enjoyed viewing and reading about the various creatures on site in their separate enclosures, some up on a higher level with steps you can climb, others inside the discovery center building. Birds, great horned owls, turkey vulture, ducks, chickens, horse, goats, gray fox, coyote, reptiles, amphibians, and of course adorable bunnies, my fave! I loved exploring with my bf at our own pace without any crowds, in fact I only saw 2-3 other people there on a Saturday afternoon, probably cuz it's hidden in a residential neighborhood. Such a lovely find with easy access and free entry. There are also seating and picnic areas to make use of while appreciating the serene environment.
