The interior is dark and cosy with comfy seating and an open fire. The bar itself is clean and modern and the beer is very well kept. There is the standard telly on the wall - so you can watch the rugby, and the beer garden is small and a little tatty. All said and done, it's a good crowd that you find drinking here and the atmosphere in the evenings is always convivial and busy. Definitely worth a visit

I left the main street though, making my way towards Two Brewers, comfortable with the idea that if it wasn't what I wanted, I'd just return to the hub of town. Then I made my way down a quiet street, past an old cemetery in an even older churchyard. I continued on, noticing the little lights that stood outside buildings older than my last few generations of ancestors. Two Brewers stood at the end of this road, announcing itself as "the oldest pub in Marlow". With its comically low ceiling in parts I can only assume that past generations were Lilliputian. I came only for alcohol but the gastropub menu soon called my name. Two Brewers serves really delicious food if the Chickpea & Spinach Curry (£9.95) and the Steak & Ale Pie (£11) were any indicator. While enjoying these dishes and accompanying brews, Two Brewers grew livelier, filled with locals, and before long one stood beside my table. "I saw you on the train today. How'd you wind up here?" he asked, baffled. His comment and the conversation which followed solidified my hunch that I'd successfully found a spot that the tourists don't usually find. I wore it like a badge of pride. When in Marlow, take the time to seek out Two Brewers. It's a bit off the beaten path but you can be back to that path in minutes. Various pretentious little pots of sauce did nothing to improve the flavour or substance. I thought that treacle tart would cheer me up but it was not treacle tart. It was a mousse like cold cake with a layer of liquid salt on top. So disappointing. As if all this was'nt bad enough. Nobody apologised and the bar man refused to let us sit at the bar claiming it was booked. An hour and a half went by and nobody sat there. Dont go here

We had the sharing chicken kebab which was amazing, cooked in the wood fired oven gives it a really smoky taste. The fish and chips were superb, really crispy batter and just enough chips which were cooked to perfection. The kids had pizzas which they described as the best pizza ever. This pub is great for larger groups and families, the kids playground has to be the best in the area. An added bonus is the ice cream cart selling really delicious Italian ice cream. We look forward to our next visit.

Faced with the insidious march of Beefeater conversions and gastro-pubs, fifty intrepid villagers bought The Jolly some 20 years ago with the simple objective of keeping it as a local. At the time, it made the national press, slightly derisively, but, with time, it's proved to be a huge success. It's still a free-house, the restaurant is still an add-on to the main bar and, good or bad, it's still frequented by a large number of villagers. You might be surprised by the number of brass medallions hanging by the log fireplaces, the number of strange old bottles surrounding the bar, and the photos of locals from previous generations supping ale on the adjoining village green but, equally, you might be relieved to find that a fast disappearing example of a genuine British pub still survives.
