December 5, 2025 Edit: 0 stars I called Clayton's Crab Company today and inquired as to whether they had Whiting. I spoke to a man but didn't request his name. He enthusiastically told me with great glee, that yes. He had received 20 lbs. I was so glad to hear this and I requested he set aside some for me. He stated no meed because he has 20 lbs. I stated I'd had this conversation before regarding sheephead only to discover when I'd driven over 20 miles, that someone had purchased all of them. He asked me how much I wanted. I stated $30.00 and he replied four would cost about $20 plus dollars because he had recently sold that amount. He stated "I'll pick four or five hood ones for you and you can come pick them up". I thanked him heartily. LO AND BEHOLD! I arrive at Clayton's and there is a bag of Whiting with only a few small Whiting in the ice. The young man asks if the bagged Whiting are mine. I stated I don't know because I was told there would be four or five set aside for me. He's walking to the scale as I'm speaking. Some woman told him those fish were for Libby. I stated go to the back and bring me the four/five set aside for me. He stated there were no more. I looked at him incredulously and I began to state word for word what I was told. A large man emerged from the back and stated: "Just give her four of the large ones out of the bag." The same young man proceeds to the scale again and places the entire bag of fish on the scale; one was hanging over the scale. The price was $75. I stated to the young man that he was told to take out four of the large fish. He took out more than four and thectotal was $54.03. I stated I'd take them. This woman stated to the large man whom I'd spoken to earlier: "You will have to speak to Libby because this isn't right!" He said I will, I forgot to take the fish out. As I waited, they were discussing the issue of the fish. The big burly obese man asked me loudly "Didn't you say you wanted $30.00 worth?" I stated I would purchase the fish he was supposedly in the process of cleaning. I heard him tell the young man: "Just give her $30.00 worth!" He stated it irritably and emphatically. I told them (those gathered behind the counter) if you don't want to sell me the fish, then keep them. I'm walking toward the door and I hear a male's voice asking: "Do you want the fish?" I stated just as emphatically "No, because you don't want to sell me the fish!" I walked out, got into my car and left, seething. To state this was a miserable debacle, is an understatement! I'm very sure this could have been handled much better than it was. He changed my order without my permission and thought that I was obtuse and would accept it. Not today, Clayton's! I will no longer purchase seafood or anything else from Clayton's Crab Company. Their priorities are not customers, their actions scream bias, hypocrisy and arrogance. read more

Finally stopped here after months of driving by and wondering what was in that shop. Plenty of seafood to choose from including cooked dishes. We picked up a seafood linguini on sale and a seafood rice as a buy one get 50% off the second one. Great customer service too. The linguini was tasty once I warmed it up; however, the crab rice was a little dry for my husband's taste but you can't bear the price. I will definitely go back and see what other goodies they have. It also beats the prices at grocery stores for fresh seafood. read more

Great food! I was looking for a crab place that delivered & saw this on Uber eats. I ordered the crab & shrimp boil and the shrimp boil. My bf & I loved it! It was well seasoned & a nice portion size for the price. The crab & shrimp boil was only $16.99! It came with one big snow crab claw, 1 corn, about 6 shrimp & a lot of potatoes! The shrimp boil had about 8 shrimp, corn & potatoes. It was less than $8. The delivery was free with Uber eats. The food comes cooked, just needs to be warmed to melt the garlic butter. The only thing I would've preferred is an option add spice. I typically prefer my boils with mild or medium garlic butter. We will definitely order again. read more

Found this gem a few years ago. Fresh, fresh fish! Master filet man there. We often by snapper heads for soup and he expertly preps them for you at no extra cost. I grew up in Maryland on the Chesapeake bay, and Claytons has the best crabs found in Central Florida. Live or steamed, costly but worth it. They sell crab cakes that are spot on flavor wise. I usually add some fresh picked lump to them. Wish I had their recipe. Good Florida farm raised clams too. Staff is friendly and helpful. I recommend. read more

I've been to Clayton's several times. Coming from NYC ...the King Crab legs Clayton's carries are huge and they are a shade less than Costco prices (when they have their seafood specials). Clayton's have the biggest local blue crabs in the area. I mean, twice the size of blue crabs we would get in NY and NJ. They have a prepared dish that is amazing, cooked blue crabs in garlic butter and it is heavenly. Reheat it when you get home for 20 minutes ....and for a crab lover, you're in gastronomic ecstasy. They carry frozen soft shell crabs, lobster tails, fresh locally caught fish, clams and shrimp. Their soup was the only disappointing item we purchased. It was their new england clam chowder. At dinner, my nephew called it 'clam surprise', because he said, we'd be surprised if we found any clams in it. It was mostly broth and a few pieces of potato. read more

Really wanted to love this place. Have heard great things about it and it's close to home. Unfortunately when we got in the clerk was very rushy and seemed annoyed that we weren't sure what fish to go with the very second we walked up to the counter. I knew we wanted shrimp so I asked her to bag some for us while we looked at the fish. I'm pregnant so I had to actually google which fish options were safe. When I asked what kinds of whole fish they had we were automatically dismissed saying they can't sell a whole fish because they're too close to closing time and wouldn't have time. Fair enough if I was asking for her to filet it but we're capable of cleaning and cutting it ourselves but she wouldn't even tell us what kinds they had. We got snapper and grouper and shrimp. The fish had a slightly funky smell when we opened the bag but we paid over $35 for 3 small fillets of fish so we cooked it anyways. However the shrimp was filled with poop sacks which is normal but when cleaning them we realized half of the shrimp was mushy to the point where it fell apart like an over cooked potato and didn't seem safe to eat while pregnant. So ended up wasting about a pound and a half of shrimp. The couple that weren't mushy were very tasty but unfortunately the majority were inedible. Definitely will not be going back after the service and fact that most of the shrimp were tossed in the trash. Really upset to even have to leave this review because I wanted to love it sooo much! read more

Stopped at Publics today we wanted haddock or cod A simple Meaty mild fish!! Yes they had it at 13.00 a lb. really for cod!!! Thought if run over to claytons Long way home but oh well. I was driving back to Gainesville with 2 dozen oysters and several pounds of shrimp- thankfully there was a huge cooler of free ice out front to put in my cooler to keep the fish fresh on the drive. The restaurant is easily accessible off of US 1. If you are looking for fresh fish, then this is your spot. They sell live crabs and lobsters and will cook them for you onsite. I have tried their mussels and oysters. They were fresh and delicious. They make an excellent Shrimp Salad that is fabulous. Not sure how to prepare something, they will gladly give you instructions and tips. There are a lot of stores that sell fish, but Clayton's is worth the trip. read more

Very clean and an amazing variety of seafood and other delights. I saw lobster, crab, tuna, and even whole cleaned rabbit, frozen cleaned turtle meat, alligator sausage and boudin sausage. The only downside is that when we called ahead of time we were told that the crabs arrive by 11:30. We drove an hour to get here to find that the truck didn't arrive until 1:30-2p. read more

If you want excuses and awful customer service Clayton's is your place! Not only was my order not fulfilled with no explanation, I was charged almost double for the items actually did receive. I placed my order a week in advance wasn't even given the courtesy of being told it wasn't going to be fulfilled; it wasn't until I got home and counted my order that I noticed I was short changed. I did not realize I needed to treat this place like a fast food joint and double check my bag to make sure my order was fulfilled. Apparently being untrustworthy and charging you double for your order is their usual business practice, as they had no real excuse for treating us this way.
