Anthony Bean Community Theater & Acting School

Located on the second floor of the building occupied by St. Matthew United Church, Anthony Bean has…read morecreated his own little piece of theater paradise. It's a quaint operation with a big heart. Bean put a lot of work into the effort, building a box office, providing refreshments including wine, a crawfish spinach artichoke dip, and hot dogs, chips, etc. for the kiddos. :-) The menu mixture threw me off for a minute until I thought about young theater-goers. The theater puts on good productions which normally win praises from people who truly appreciate seeing local talent at work. Bean's dedication to providing that venue for local actors and playwrights, who are mostly African-American, has been a joy to follow. His acting school component provides an opportunity for amateur thespians to learn and sharpen their skills. Most impressive is the effort the Anthony Bean Community Theater has put into the little things which make the theater experience enjoyable. The chairs are nicely covered, the surrounding curtains and risers make you forget that you are on the second floor of an old school, and (best of all) the lighting and sets are very good.

I have heard nothing but positive comments and stories from the audience members. Mr. Bean directs his focus on developing the talents and acting skills of local children. When you attend a production at the theater, you get the whole theater package with superb actors, dancing, set design, and costumes as well. This has to be one of New Orleans best kept secrets, a small theater company with first-class productions that will rank way beyond your expectations. I am looking forward to the new location in Gentilly on Paris Ave.

Something has to be done to control and organize the crowds. It's not fair to the regular members or the front desk. The workout facilities are excellent. However, effective 8-01-26, they are closing both locker rooms for 9 months!

Re: COVID-19 operations and safety practices…read more I gotta slow clap for y'all because I am loving the new implementation of the appointments online and how serious the JCC is taking COVID-19. Members of JCC Uptown are able to book appointments up to three days in advance for one hour block sessions. Everyone has to wear a mask upon entry and get your temperature checked. Per their constant email communications all members must arrive ready to workout (lockers are only available for bathrooms so no showers or storage purposes) and bring in your own towel and water bottle. They allow no more than 7 people at a time in the cardio room and around 8/9 in the weights room. Within the cardio room every other machine is shut down to practice social distancing. You'll also find plenty of marked disinfected and used cleaning sprays so you can wipe your machine before and after. Their team also cleans the machines CONSTANTLY. Like I seriously would get off the cardio machine wipe it down, just to then see them wipe it down again themselves. I feel safe coming here and appreciate there isn't a crazy occupancy capacity happening right now. TAKE MY MONIES. *Just know you will have to sign a waiver the first time you initially go during COVID-19, because liability and lawsuits ya know...

Well, no. Actually, I discovered that other parents found help for their similarly-disposed children via the martial arts. Many said that the emphasis on discipline and focus was the reason. Others said it was their child's increased confidence. Whichever reason, they were saying it worked, so I was intrigued. But I was also cautious. I didn't want this to become another "you damn well are going to practice" struggle, ending with an unused violin in the closet. Or whatever the karate equivalent to that would be. I discovered the website for Church's Karate Academy, and the price and length of the trial package was fantastic. Low output of cash, two months, uniform included. After that, you enroll at the regular monthly rate, or you walk away. No strings. Not bad! I went to the studio with the intention of enrolling my son. So glad I did!! If you go to the website expecting to find information about the studio, please don't be put off. The website is flashy, but it's also a bit generic, offering reasons why studying the martial arts is a good choice but no sense of Master Church or his studio. Frankly, the website feels like more of a sales pitch than much else, but that is not how Master Church himself is. The studio works like this. Karate students are placed in a class group based on their age and expertise. Master Church holds classes for each of those groups five or six days per week at regularly scheduled times. You attend two of those classes per week, and he tracks this via an attendance card. You do not have to commit to particular classes. For example, if you can normally attend on Mondays and Wednesdays, but something comes up one Wednesday, you can go to the Monday and Friday class for your group instead. Or, if you split custody, perhaps it's easier for Mom to take Kid on Tues and Wed but Dad to take kid on Wed and Sat. No problem. No need to tell Master Church in advance. Just show up to whichever two classes per week for your group. So flexible. As for Master Church, enough cannot be said about how great of a teacher he is. It's obvious that he genuinely cares about and believes in them. In return, they want to do well and can't stand the thought of disappointing him. He's that kind of teacher. If you have ever had such a teacher yourself, you know their magic. He is firm, though, not a push over, and he has their respect for that. I eventually even enrolled a certain violin quitter, and she loves it. What's more? I honestly cannot remember the last time my son hit me, although I'm sure I'm just as frustrating as ever.
