And, how to make those perfectly brown garlic bits without burning them? All of these are too complicated for my meager kitchen skills. So what's suitable for vegans and great to pair with the garlic fried rice? They have a stellar mapo tofu dish (omit meat, chicken powder, you know the drill) that just complements the rice in both taste and texture. Also, do get their garlic stir-fried broccoli--it's perfectly cooked, still firm with the right amount of crunch.

Kowloon claims to have the "world's best dimsum" and it's not an idle boast. How else could it have survived for the longest time? However, the outlet along Dona Soledad Avenue says it's open 24 hours a day, but there have been several occasions when I passed by and it was closed for business. The place is more kiosk than restaurant, by the way. There are only a handful of tables and chairs, but that's ok. Most customers order take out anyway. There's been only one out of so many times when I wasn't totally satisfied with my Kowloon siopao. The taste seemed funny, close to spoiling. I chalk up that one bad experience to their possibly recycling unsold siopao. Or maybe it was just one bad batch out of thousands sold every month. I then proceeded to their chicken rice. The chicken is served glistening with oil on its skin and meat. On the side, were servings of minced garlic and scallions best smeared all over a bowl of white rice. All in all, it's a good place for a meal.
