Payne's Gym - Squat racks

This is the best Gym in Odessa…read more The biggest difference between this gym and others is the environment. You can tell from when you walk in that all the staff love working here, the members are all serious about their workouts, and the equipment selection has thought and passion put into it. While most gyms stick to cheap plastic weights, Payne's gym chooses to use primarily old-school iron adding to a strong lifting environment. Then they go the extra mile providing Olympic plates and plastic plates if that's your preference. The barbells all seem well taken care of and they have a few unique bars (football, beginner, and safety squat) for variety. The staff informed me that they are happy to store your personal bar at the gym if you are a serious lifter as well. I know most people say that the gym is a little small but this is the definition of quality over quantity. Most big gyms are full of cheap and old machines, but every single machine here was chosen by someone who actually lifts and wants the best for the gym. I've seen special equipment here that I've only seen at famous gyms like Alphalete in Houston. On top of that they have the most full power racks (4), most working flat benches (4, plus they have free benches you can put in any of the squat racks), and the most working stair masters (4) which embarrasses all the other local gyms. I've never had to wait for any equipment but I do admit I've never been during peak times around 5-7pm. The money you pay to sign up isn't super cheap, but a fraction of the ridiculous prices at Flex24. And the value you get here is insane. They are currently expanding to add a room for group fitness and turf for functional training. I've been in Odessa for two years, and every other gym I've been to has stayed exactly the same. But here at Payne's they are constantly expanding, repairing equipment, and overall putting the money you pay back into the gym. You might even see Mr. Payne working out next to you, or hanging out ready to talk about how he can make the gym better for your needs. That level of passion from a business owner is something rare and unheard of in today's corporate business market. Don't make the same mistake I did signing up for the first gym you visit here! I highly encourage you to use a free day pass at Payne's and the other local gyms to see for yourself. Be a smart customer and you'll be confident signing up for Payne's in no time.

From a washed up athletes perspective this place is golden! Great environment and great staff who…read moreare there to answer questions and serve the Payne community. I feel like the negative reviews below are fabricated. Sauna is on constantly and is very very hot. Bathrooms are cleaned daily, you might run into a dirty sink after hours but isn't that normal? Every machine and rack are cleaned constantly due to patrons cleaning their sweat from the machines as well as staff cleaning. They have more than enough machines to never get stuck waiting on someone who is finishing. With 4 stairclimbers, 2 free squat racks, 2 smith machines, leg press, and more; this is a dream leg day spot. They also have an entire room dedicated to bench and incline. I can not speak from another persons perspective but I think that it's safe to say that from what I've witnessed, no one condones violence in this gym. Unless it's on some heavy weight!!!!!

TruFit Odessa - Worn out equipment

I joined TruFit a few months ago because my fiancé had her membership there before I & we usually…read moreworkout together when our schedule allows it. I had came from a really nice gym closer to town that was newer but much more pricey so because of this and my fiancé, I decided to give TruFit a chance. My experience with this gym is not a great one but not a horrible one either. I'll explain. The equipment is fair and it just seems like it takes a little longer than needed to get anything fixed. Since the merge with the new name it seems like they are revamping the place, which is a big plus but it still needs a lot of work. Dumbbells and misc equipment is always missing. I do believe it's mostly up to the member to return the weights to its designated area but I also do believe they should have staff helping to keep weights & equipment organized and in order. The men's restroom always needs attention of some sort. For some reason at least 1 urinal is always broke. It gets fixed but it's always something. I do give them credit for trying to make it suitable for its members but I believe it could do a better job at maintenance the restrooms and equipment. I understand it's going through a process of change at the moment & that's why I will not give it less stars because change does take time. Due to this, I will give them the benefit of doubt. Hopefully by then most of these issues will be addressed and it turns in to a great place that I know it can become. A future review will be provided once the gym is completed.

most of the equipment is broken, and charging bi weekly isn't ideal, I recommend planet fitness…read moreover TruFit any day.

Ive seen a guy with his poster on a wall. Take a machete because he got beat up by a blonde guy…read more The blonde guy was just minding his business. But poster guy said he was hitting the bags too hard. It escalated and they fought. I saw a young kid get angry at this guy there, because this guy would be training. He was real good. The kid would be with older guys, The kid would talk crap to this guy,I guess because this guy was good and maybe the kid was insecure. The guy just kept ignoring them and doing his thing. One day the guy and the kid were training. Then the kid yelled "this guys thinks he's tough!" he walked to his work out bag.His uncle laughed and said "what are you gonna do?" Then the kid pulled out a gun. The uncle looked like he saw a ghost and grabbed the gun and shoved back in the bag. The 3 older guys the kid was with.Shoved him back and held him back. They asked the kid if he was crazy. They left immediately while looking at the guy. The guy just stood there. I asked him if he knew them.He said no. I asked him what he did to them. He said nothing. He said he would just hear them talking crap. But he would just ignore them. He said he said he didn't even know what they looked like because he was just trying to mind his own busines.I didn't see that kid again. There's just those type of insecure people that go there. Don't pay in advance. The owner is a hard headed and insecure person.I mean if you sign up, you'll meet him and know exactly what I mean. His people skills aren't very, good. It's old school, yes.Which is why I like it.But the owner, Gino, hates, and I mean hates the loud noises. The loud noises infuriate him. Which is insane since it's a gym.It looks like an old school gym. But it doesn't have the same feel. Because if you're loud you'll hear whining from the Gino the owner. He should've made it meditating place instead of a gym. If you slam anything on the floor he freaks out. Whether it be weights, medicine balls, or jumping to hard. It drives him nuts. He had a tire and sledge hammer in there. But would go crazy when people would use it. He took out after a while. But why have in the first place? He acts tough with smaller people. So if you're big he probably won't say anything to your face but he'll whisper and pace around and watch you from a distance. Or he'll confront you when he has a group of guys with him. If you see a white guy with dread locks. Stay away from that guy he's one negative Nancy, a little b*tch, that one is. I was doing pull ups, some buffed guys are in there slamming weights onto the ground grunting, and just putting in work. He sees them you can tell the owners livid. The guys leave I was doing push ups by myself at this point. The owner goes in the room and yells at me  "are you the one slamming the weights!! Stop slamming the weights! And stop using heavy weights on the bars! You're bending them! Puffs up his chest and leaves. I'm almost 6 ft but very skinny. Just bu looking at me you know I don't lift heavy. The owner saw the guys who were doing the lifting, but stayed quiet. The big muscled guys leave. Sees a scrawny guy and decides to let out his frustration. I'm sure he felt big and strong in the moment. But those are the actions of a weak person. But I just know how he is and acts. So I just put my earbuds back in, listened to some music and finished my work out. I showed up late one day and there were weights everywhere, all over the floor. Some guys I'd never seen before were working out. They looked like bodybuilders. I went upstairs to do some stretching. The owner shows up with some skinny guy and the skinny guys asked me why I haven't put up the weights? Then he goes on a rant. The owner yells "when you use the weights put them back! I always have to pick them up!" I just stood there baffled. The skinny guy tells me to help him put up the weights. I said "no, I didn't even use the weights." He asked "who did then?" I walked to the stairs. Stared at the 5 huge guys lifting weights. Then stared at skinny guy and the owner like morons and shrugged. Then I went back to stretching. They went downstairs and began putting up the weights. After a while, I heard commotion, the big guys were leaving. I went to grab some water downstairs from the fountain. While the owner and the skinny guy, were picking up weights. The big guys left the weights on the bars. Left the bars and weights on the ground. Grabbed their stuff, one of the guys turned and looked at me then looked at the owner and skinny guy,  I guess they heard the yelling from upstairs, then the big guys left. The owner and skinny looked at them then looked down. They didn't tell them anything! Cowards. I couldn't believe it. They didn't say a word! You also can't kick the bags with shoes on. Not a bad thing but just so you know. You can't hit the bags without gloves. You can't hit the bags hard. You can't make noises while you lift or hit the bag. I've seen people get confronted for these things.
