R & J Auto Body - WASHVILLE CAR WASH SOMERSWORTH

R & J Auto Body

I cannot say enough good things about my experience with R & J Auto Body, particularly Jim, who…read morehandled my Scion's repair. The work on the car was absolutely flawless--it looks brand new, which is incredible considering the damage. What truly sets them apart is their customer service and integrity. First, the communication was stellar. Jim took the time to update me at each and every step of the repair process. More impressively, he went into great detail explaining the potential for any future problems related to the accident, setting clear expectations, which is a rare quality in this industry. Second, I had a very embarrassing mix-up regarding the payment. I was unable to process the payment for about an hour due to an issue on my end, and the team (Emma, etc.) showed me nothing but grace and patience. To make matters worse, I mistakenly and publicly blamed Jim for charging me twice when the duplicate charge was actually a pre-authorization that resolved almost instantly. Jim handled my mistake with total professionalism and kindness, immediately clarifying the situation without making me feel foolish. R & J Auto Body does amazing work, and they treat their customers with respect, even when the customers are wrong! As the saying should be, "We all make mistakes except for Jim and R & J auto body."

Many years ago, I had a legendarily terrible experience with an auto group in the seacoast area…read morethat shall remain unnamed because it's irrelevant to this review. I honestly believed the utter incompetence would remain unmatched until the day I died. And then I had the misfortune of having to deal with R&J Auto Body and I was proven wrong. I can't fault these people for the body work. They did the work, apparently properly, and it looks like the damage that occurred after my vehicle was stolen out of my yard and later recovered never happened. The problem is that what they told me would be a two and a half day job ended up taking just under three weeks, and even then it took me threatening to have the vehicle towed somewhere else for them to get it done. Customer service is an absolute joke to these people. They don't care how long it takes, they don't care how much hardship they cause you, and they don't care how they're perceived. I can only assume this is because they've somehow weaseled their way into being a "preferred" garage with at least one insurance company, so they figure they don't need repeat customers. Honestly, I should have known this would be an issue on day one, when I was told they would call me to schedule an appointment as soon as my insurance estimate was approved. After not hearing from them for six days, despite knowing the estimate had been approved, I gave up and called to make an appointment myself. They gave me one- for two weeks later. This wasn't a huge issue for me, since I understand it's a busy time of year, everyone is short handed, blah blah blah the usual. The day I finally dropped the car off, I was told it would be ready "at the end of the week." I heard nothing at the end of the week, so I called on Friday and was told "The lock set had to be sent back so as soon as that gets here today, we'll get it installed and tow it to the dealership to be reprogrammed." They told me they would call me back and let me know when it had been towed. I did not receive a call. I called again the following Monday to inquire and was told "The lock set is being installed today and then they have to tow it to the dealership to be reprogrammed." There was no explanation as to why this was not done on Friday when I was told it was being done, no apology for the delay, nothing. They told me they would call back as soon as they knew when the vehicle could be reprogrammed. I did not receive a call. I called again the next day and basically got blown off, so I called again a few hours later and mysteriously, the car "ready to be picked up." I drove over after work after arranging a second person to drive back from the garage. Upon pulling into the lot, we saw my car sitting right up front- with the key in the ignition and no one in sight, so that's neat when I've already recently had my car stolen once. We looked inside, and the interior detailing that was part of my estimate had not been done. The car was filled with trash and upon opening the door I was smacked in the face with the reek of cigarettes, exactly as it had been when I dropped it off. I walked in and inquired as to why the car was still full of trash and smelled of cigarette smoke and Jim's immediate response was "That's not on my estimate!" When I responded with "Well, it's on mine," he suddenly found the time to shuffle through the paperwork and see that, in fact, it was on the estimate and he had "missed it because there was a zero on that line." A quick rewind regarding this statement- the day I received the estimate, we heard Jim tell LJ, "Put a zero on that line and write 'per invoice' because we don't know what the final cost on the detailing will be" since the detailing is outsourced to someone else. Now, all of a sudden, Jim didn't see the detailing on the estimate even though he was the one who indicated there should be a zero on that line, so one assumes that's a regular practice? Interesting. Anyway, Jim told me he would call the detailer and find out when he could get the vehicle in for detailing, and indicated he would call and let me know. I left, still without my vehicle, and in case you haven't already been noticing a theme, I did not receive a call. On Wednesday morning I called AGAIN and was told, "I THINK they're on the way to drop it off to be detailed now." I specifically asked them to call me when the detailing was done and the car could be picked up. I did not receive a call. Long story short, at this point the next time I called it became a screaming match, he made more excuses and told more lies, and I finally got the vehicle back after threatening to have the vehicle towed somewhere else to have the work completed. I will not ever be back and I will make a point of telling everyone I know to go somewhere else.

Maybe this place was good in the past, but they seem to have fallen into disarray…read more I call to ask about having my bumper replaced. "Sure, bring it by," the guy says. "I'll be there in 20 minutes," I say. "See you then," the guy says. 20 minutes later, I arrive... and the guy I talked to is nowhere to be found, and the other guy there has no idea who I am, can't give me a quote, etc. Apparently, the guy I talked to stepped out... Later on, I drop off the bumper to be painted. More confusion ensues, but they take the bumper and the paint sample, and say they will match it. Many weeks go by.... finally I call them. Oh, yeah, the bumper is done, the guy says. But he had totally forgotten about it, he says. Can I bring the car to have the new bumper installed? More confusion ensues, where he can't tell me a day/time that will actually work. I'm going out of town in a few weeks, so I decide that I should call back after I get back in town. After I get back in town, I call to schedule, and he tells me he can install the bumper on Thursday, in two days. Sounds good! When should I bring it by? First thing in the morning, he says. Like, 8am? More like 8:30am, he says. By the way, we never talked price. How much will all this cost? More confusion, and then... roughly $800? I guess that sounds good? Thursday arrives, and I bring the car at 8:30 as planned. The guy looks at me in total confusion, like, "What are you doing here?" I mention my car, and having the painted bumper installed. He says that they're one guy short, and won't be able to get to it until tomorrow. But of course, we need the car tomorrow. Thursday was the day we planned on not having the car. He also has a doctor's appointment, etc. He seems really stressed. Then he says he doesn't even know where our painted bumper is. Could be upstairs, could be in the basement. Gulp.... has he lost our bumper? So we tell him we are going to have to reschedule, and then my wife and I are about to drive away (in our two cars, so she could drive me home when I dropped the car off), and then I'm like, "Wait a minute, enough is enough. I should just get my bumper, pay for the paint job, and take it somewhere else for the install." I mean, if Thursday couldn't work, as agreed, he should have called us to let us know. But come to think of it, he never even wrote down our phone number, or my name, or any other information about me or my car. So I go back in. The owner guy is nowhere to be found, and one of the younger technician guys knows nothing about my bumper, or how much it will cost, etc. More confusion ensues, and they finally call the owner guy, and he says $600, and I'm like, "Fine." They also go upstairs and find the bumper. Well, that's good news! And yeah, it would be easy to lose something there.... the place is absolutely piled with junk. Like... if I actually dropped my car off here, would it return in one piece? They bring the bumper down, and it's all dusty, but they wipe it down, and the paint looks nice. There's a scuff on one corner of the bumper, but at this point, I'm just going to take it. So one of the techs takes me into the office, which is an RV in the back, again completely piled with disorganized papers and junk. He processes my card, and I take my bumper and go. Two stars, because I feel bad for the owner, who's getting old and seems like he may have some health problems. But yeah, I would never bring another car here.

I was happy with the repair on my car, the cost, and their customer service. The only issue is…read moretheir location. They are on a busy road and have a small area to park. It was a little nerve wracking getting out onto the road from this spot.
