Theatre UCF - HEDDA GABLER, Spring 2017

Theatre UCF

This is the theatre on the campus of UCF. I stopped in to see a play that my dear friend was…read moreDirecting, a one act called "The Woods", it was part of their 10th anniversary celebration. At no cost, I was surprised by their quality! Quite possibly one of the best student plays I've had the pleasure of seeing. But this review isn't about the play.. it really is about the theatre, isn't it? Well, it's in an old lecture hall, so the seats are large, the rows are comfortable with plenty of leg room. The stage is wide and the lighting, while at times, oddly places, is both sufficient and efficient. The sound quality (acoustics) was quite pleasant as was the atmosphere of the lobby and box office area. The bathrooms, while dated, offered something you don't see in most bathrooms. Ledges on which to place your purse and a hook. No need to place your purse on the nasty floor! Kudos! I was quite pleased with my experience here.

My husband was searching for a local production of Spring Awakening and stumbled upon Theatre UCF…read more I went to school at UCF many years ago and never once saw a production. At $20 a person for non-students, it is a good value. The performers are student actors with an occasional professional actor. We saw Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liasons). There is plenty of space between rows so no one has to squeeze by. No food or drink is allowed in the theater. The quality of the acting was very good. If you are looking for an affordable alternative to Bob Carr, you might be pleased.

Why do we return and why do you want to enroll here? 1. Appropriateness - Honestly, this is the first reason we entered the studio. I very much appreciate that the students learn choreography that is modest and doesn't put their bodies into compromising positions. I also value that the music used is classical and young students are not being exposed to lyrics their ears are not ready to hear and think about. 2. Superb instruction. Attention to detail. 3. Students learn quality ballet, giving them a solid foundation for any dance style. 4. Performances! Students are given multiple opportunities to perform throughout the year. Not just a mid and year end recital. Students gain actual performance skills while having a fabulous time in a safe environment. 5. Wisdom & strength - Students legs are prepared and strengthened before going on pointe. This is important for their own protection. I appreciate that the instructors don't throw students onto pointe before their muscles are ready. 6. Growth - Students grow in their abilities and skill level. Every year there is an amazing transformation in skill level. 7. World class dancers - It's exciting to know that our students receive experience and quality instruction to such a caliber that they are going off and performing full time across Europe, with Disney, Universal, Dallas Neo-Classical Ballet. 8. You will feel at home here.

There are some amazing things about this theatre space…read more I love the way the doors can slide open so on nice Orlando nights it's like an open air entrance. I love how beautiful the stairwell is going up to two. I love how much they have expanded their food and beverage line up over the years. The sound tends to be pretty good, the communication from the theatre is always amazing. They waive fees if you come to the box office to buy your tickets. The seats are comfy and almost every seat has a solid view. The box seats are the exception so be warned. The volunteers are always amazing and they are so nice. It would be cool if they opened a second location that served coffee because that line for espresso beverages is always really long. I love the breadth of show types. There's always something for everyone.

Swan Lake October 2025…read more This is one of those performances that stays with you long after the curtain comes down. I saw Swan Lake back in October 2025, and somehow I'm only just now sitting down to write about it.... I apologize for not getting this review out sooner. The last time I had seen this ballet... I was in my twenties, which feels like another lifetime ago. Swan Lake sits right up there with The Nutcracker in terms of recognition. You grow up knowing it, even if you've never actually seen it live. As a little girl, it lives in your imagination. The costumes, the movement, the elegance, and that quiet belief that maybe one day you could be that dancer. For a lot of people, that dream gets planted early and never fully leaves. Walking into this performance, I felt that history. Not just personal, but cultural. Swan Lake carries weight because it's about illusion versus truth, about wanting something you can't quite have and mistaking appearances for reality. Tension is built into every movement. Swan Lake is not the same experience as The Nutcracker. The Nutcracker is festive and structured more like a showcase. Swan Lake is continuous, demanding, and far more intense. The lead roles require stamina, precision, and emotional control from start to finish, and the corps de ballet has to move in perfect synchronization with no room for error. It really is the Olympics of ballet. This performance delivered. It was polished, immersive, and held my attention the entire time. I found myself watching not just the choreography, but the control, the discipline, and the way each dancer carried themselves on stage. One dancer in particular stood out to me, Bernardo Betancor. He was exactly what you imagine when you think of a leading male ballerina. He carried a statuesque presence on stage and was, without question, easy on the eyes. More than that, he had command. The kind that makes your eyes go back to him whether you mean to or not. I'm glad I finally made it back to Swan Lake after all these years, and even more glad I didn't miss this one. Huge thanks to Ronnald M. for pulling me into this night, because let's be honest... this is not exactly a bad way to spend an evening.

The center has a more home-like atmosphere vs. hospital-like atmosphere. It is still very clean and it was re-modeled in the summer. The playground is the best I have ever seen, very large, and diverse and it is completely shaded by mature oak trees. The lunches are actually healthy like spaghetti and meat sauce, roast chicken, rice and beans. Every now and then they do either hot dog or hamburger. No fried foods are served which is a real plus! My sons love the food. They have lots of cool toys, music, and activities. My son made a fish on a string and pole (stick) that was so cute. It is very affordable and vacation weeks are only $20 reservation fees vs. half of the normal weekly tuition. Kids and Co is open until 7pm for late workers! The Director is fantastic and extremely personable. Very easy to talk to if your child has any special needs. I deducted half a star because not all of the teachers speak a lot of English. Note that the teachers for 2 yrs olds and up + the Director speak perfect English so not a big deal to me (just a couple folks out of the 10 on staff). Also note, that the children are shown G rated movies on a TV between 6pm and 7pm (I have no issue with this, but I know some parents are sticklers on TV). The kids are also typically given an extra snack between when the teachers are cleaning up. Hope this helps!
