I took quite a few different dance classes, but the classes were usually too large and I never felt like I really "got it". Then, as if by divine intervention, I met Shari Fortino and her husband, Mike Smothers. How fortunate am I that these two talented, gracious and lovely humans teach a variety of ballroom dance styles right here in Morro Bay. Shari owned a thriving dance school in Bakersfield for many years before moving to the coast. If you've ever wanted to REALLY LEARN how to dance swing, cha cha, fox trot, rhumba, etc., I would give Debonaire School of Ballroom Dancing 10 stars, if I could. See you on the dance floor!

I called and called no one answered. Finally a girl answers the phone- I tell her my situation, I'm moving, I need to cancel. She says okay, give me all your information and I'll relay this and get it canceled. She assured me there were no more steps for me to take. I got a charge on my card the next month. I called back and explained and they denied I ever tried to cancel. I went in person to confront them, the lady helping me was so difficult and made me feel awful. She said it was my fault for not coming in person to cancel and they will not refund me the month I got charged for. I still think about the way I was treated when face to face with that lady. I'm mad I didn't pry more- such a bummer.

Not immune to challenges faced by other jr high schools (even private schools in our experience)…read morebut they seem to attract a gentler group of students. Sometimes I wonder if this is because the kids are around other age groups (it's for grades 4-8) and not just other jr high students. Or maybe part of it is the arts-based curriculum which gives kids some wonderful outlets for their talents. They don't have to pretend the arts aren't cool to fit in with their peers. One thing I've finally learned as a parent is that what may be a great fit for one kid is not for another. However, two of our children, both very different personalities, have gone here and it has been an excellent experience for them. We've had several teachers go out of their way on several occasions and have felt warmly embraced in the community by Principal Rubin and Chris in the front office.

The interior is nice and spacious, with lots of mat space for the kids. They attended class each day from 8:30 am until 12;30 and we picked them up when they were done to drive them home. We stopped in to watch the last ten minutes or so of class. The class seemed very well organized, with all kids engaged, and being attended to. Our nephew was excited to show us how he had learned a tumbling run ending in a flip in just five days! As a former teacher myself, I appreciated the way that the instructor addressed each child by name, lining them up safely and comfortably to wait outdoors for their parents to pick them up!

That said, as usual, the venue knocked it out of the park, as I sat through that visual and audio assault, I was comfortable. It's incredible that the high school performances there are stark in comparison. What actual professionalism and passion looks like vs a bunch of people who thought "hey let's do a play".
