I checked their website, their work and reviews in Facebook. They seemed to know what they were doing. Well, I was wrong.
One brother came to look at the job, and take measurements for a quote. When the second brother came to do the job, he said that the measurements had been done wrong and more material was needed. Fortunately, the supplier managed to get it in a very timely manner (Laminate Warehouse in Langford, they were great).
When the flooring job was done on June 21, I got an invoice for the final payment the next day. I paid while requesting that they came back to finish the job. The closet had been left with gaps between the flooring and the wall at the entrance (the boards had been clearly cut wrong); the closet door's rail had not been fully screwed back to the floor; and the hatch to the crawlspace had been left with gaps all around. I sent photos to both brothers. I was reassured those things would be fixed.
The brother who had done the installation came back, finished fastening the rails, and placed some kind of rubbery edge on the hatch, which later I found out had not been fastened, so it coiled as soon as I lifted the hatch. He said he did not know how to fix the hatch nor the gaps left in the closet and that he would figure it out.
I sent photos of the hatch with the coiled and loose strip.
Then, the other brother came and asked me if I had plywood to fix the gaps (that left me gasping), and said he would come back another day with a metal strip to put on the edge of the hatch. When he returned, the level of craftmanship showed the same lack of skill and care that the fitting of the floor had indicated. The selected screws were at least twice the thickness of the hatch and presented a cutting hazard to unsuspecting people opening the hatch. To make matters worse, it looked like he had been in a rush to get somewhere, and he drove the screws at an angle into the hatch leaving the sharp edges of the tapered heads exposed as additional cutting hazards. Additionally, the metal strip along one edge was cut too long for the hatch and kept it from seating properly against the wall. I have been unable to properly close the hatch since the installation of the metal strip.
It has been well over 2 months, and after several emails, I have been left in shock. At no point in the discussions prior to commencing the job had I ever been asked to consider or obtain any additional materials to complete the work. With the job now in a shambles, I have been berated for not providing sufficient materials to do the work. I'm appalled that these so-called trades people are now blaming me for not micromanaging them and providing depth of experience and insight to guide the project to a successful completion. It is clear my floor will never be fixed by these people as neither they nor I have the experience or knowledge to complete the task which has been set back mostly by incompetence. Just a few more minutes of time and attention to detail would have ensured a proper fit of the floor, the trimming of the metal strip and the selection and use of the appropriate screws. None of these deficiencies should have been a challenge to a true tradesperson.
Too late for me. Save yourself. read more
