Old Owl Tavern - Grilled salmon and green beans (not pictured--my second side was the side salad).

After a day long visit to Shaker Village, a 10 minute drive to the Old Owl Tavern (part of the…read moreBeaumont Inn) was the perfect choice for dinner. As soon as we parked the car we were greeted by a ginormous need of mint...the scent was inticing. The tavern does not take reservations and we arrived at the perfect time, around 5:30. But 6 pm the bar was full and most of the tables were also filled. The tavern had good character, dark, woody...with photos of rick houses on the wall along with paintings of two fierce owls. We were greeted immediately and had the pleasure of being served by the most pleasant and efficient waitress. Enough choices for bourbon, some good drafts, and a deliciously made dry martini (along with a coffee for our tea toatler yesterday) started is off. There was a nice selection of specials for the day...some of which only a true southerner could appreciate (fruit gel topped with mayo, tomato spicy over cottage cheese topped with mayo) and some like cream of broccoli soup and steak boardelaise that even a yank could appreciate. Our table settled on two orders of fried catfish which came with a choice of two sides...baked potato and coleslaw were the choices. One of our diners choose the fried chicken livers that came with cream gravy...she chose the broccoli soup and corn pudding as her sides. Our tea toatler chose the country fried steak. I will term you that everyone cleaned their plates...it was that good. A final round of coffee, the OK from the waitress that we could pick some mint (which was planted in our garden at home) and we were off. Guess who is coming back? Me!!!

Table for three was cleared and handed to us promptly (they don't take reservations)…read more Drinks were great (old fashioned and manhattan). Server was attentive and friendly. House salad was fresh with fantastic blue cheese dressing I assume was house made. Chicken livers were impeccable--crispy outside and tender and delicious inside. Gravy was nice (hint of nutmeg?) mash was acceptable but not outstanding. Chicken my companions had was good. Banana cake was outstanding! Cobbler was undercooked and not tasty (they gladly subbed in an orange/lemon cake which was great) bread pudding and cobbler both looked a little sad next to the cake portions. Perhaps think about human nature when you are pushing out desserts. It is very easy to feel let down when your dessert is tiny and your neighbor's dessert is huge! Just a thought. Recommend highly! Atmosphere, service, food, the whole picture.

I want to leave a review for Brunch with Babies / Farm Family / Farmily Days! I couldn't find a lot…read moreof details about the flow of this. Note: you can do any part of this before or after your brunch reservation, within the hours of the event. Which in 2026 was 10-2. There are 2 places to park: one by the welcome center and one by the restaurant /trustees table. It seemed if you had brunch reservations you parked by the restaurant side. Accessibility wise: they have a lot of accommodations but it's not perfect. There's a big-ish hill from parking to the restaurant, but the rest was mostly flat with tiny gravel and white chalky dust. People do dress from play wear to nice, but I'd recommend shoes you are okay with getting dusty. The farm part: There are pony rides: $5 extra per ride. My kids loved this and it was worth it. A craft area also (these were set up in front of the trustees table). Coordinated games were a little farther up. The farm is past the restaurant and they had: 2 sheep / lamb stations, goats and kids, 2 Clydesdales, a mom cow and calf, 2 pigs, turkeys/ducks/roosters, baby ducks, baby chicks. They had story telling, lamb shearing. Face paint for $10. A seed and plant thing we didn't explore. Some play areas. And of course all the grounds! It was really great! Our toddler and baby loved it! Our toddler can't sit still for stories and demos yet, but was thrilled with the animal variety and experiences. Note: there is a big sand pit we strategically avoided, but I'd imagine your kids would get dirtier in there. I was worried how much time it would take us, I'd say about an hour. I think if you're wanting to do stories and demos maybe closer to an hour and a half to 2 hours. The total event is 4 hours. This is just a note for anyone planning breakfast before, during, or after. Brunch with babies: I think the value was good. It was a buffet with: bacon, sausage, eggs, potatoes, gravy, grits, cooked apples, waffles, and cereal. They delivered 1 biscuit and pumpkin muffin per person with butter and jam to the table. There were people scooping, but I assume you could get more. The grits and sausage were so good. I don't even normally like sausage. The biscuit and jam were so good too. All the food was delicious. I saw someone trash talk the breakfast buffet in an another review, but every bite I ate was good. I just came back from Disney, this was above the standard breakfast buffet in quality. IF you are wanting a relaxing, DINKS or retired experience, I'd look at the calendar before booking. Some of the adults seemed overwhelmed by kids near them, and on this date, the restaurant was FULL with kids.

The buildings are spread out, so visitors should expect to do a fair amount of walking. I also recommend checking the schedule and attending any tours or informational sessions available, because otherwise you're just walking around reading plaques. Staff were very friendly and I learned a lot from the short tour we went on. We also attended a Shaker music presentation, which was fun and informative. Viewing the farm and barn was fun and there happened to be a farmer there who shared a lot of info with us. Also enjoyed the chickens and ducks!

I don't usually leave reviews but this one deserves it…read more There was no hotels around the surrounding area on the weekend and despite the poor reviews I figured it couldn't be that bad. It's under construction which isn't a big deal being all torn up. Went to check in there was no one there. Rang the bell a few times and the woman finally came around. Said you should have rang the bell. Whatever. She was at the end of the hall smoking with friends I guess. Speaking of smoking, the whole hotel is a non smoking hotel, yet the rooms and bathrooms smell like smoke. Really bad. Speaking of smoke, the room has a smoke detector, which conveniently needed batteries so it beeped all night. Not sure how, but when you turn the bathroom lights on it smelled like cigarette smoke. Sense we are talking about the bathroom I'll tell you how dirty it is. It's pretty gross. And I am pretty sure I got athletes foot or something like that, I have a wonderful itching and burning between my toes. No big deal, I'll just sit in the chair next to the bed. Well that's even more gross than the bathroom, looks like it hasn't been cleaned in 100 years. We can't forget the pre stained sheets. Whatever, time to check out. I booked online and paid with a credit card. Online. When I check out they asked for a credit card. I didn't think anything of it. I looked at the receipt after I left and was charged $155. Weird. I already (over) paid $190 online. I go back and ask and she says oh they only charge enough to hold it and we charge the rest. I got to chase after them and file a claim with the credit card company and hopefully get money back. We shall see. I guess I would have been better off sleeping in my truck. I wouldn't go back there ever again. Hopefully I can share my mistakes with you guys and steer you away. Now for the best part. The pictures.

I had colleagues on different floors who told me their experience was better. Someone said first floor rooms may be the better option. I stayed at a room on the 3rd floor my first visit and then on the second my 2nd visit. Both were similar. The room in the 3rd floor AC controls were on the window unit. The room in the 2nd floor AC controls were through the control unit in the wall. Both rooms had a damp smell and feeling. It smelled old. I couldn't get over it. The gym was smaller than most Hampton Inns I've been in. A colleague on the second floor said she saw bugs in the closet. I saw tiny bugs in the shower. I understand it's a smaller town, there were very few options and this hotel is older. Not many solutions besides renovating the whole thing...

The breakfast was fresh and well laid out. Appreciated the boiled eggs in a little zip lock snack bag. Look forward to staying here again in the future.
