These are a few of the intruders caught loitering in the Claridge House.

Don't be misled by the singular, shill 5 star review. Just visit the coop's website and go through the minutes of monthly meetings, or ask for a copy of the last 25 resident notices. Claridge House really stands out as one of the worst managed institutions in Washington. Don't be fooled by the recent refurbishments. Owners are stuck paying for low quality fixtures and equipment in the common areas and low-grade 42" TVs budgeted at $5,000 in the gym. Carpeting is already threadbare in spots, new lighting had to be removed soon after install. Meanwhile, roof leaks are common, expensive repairs and water outages the norm. Mortar is falling out in areas, cracked in others. Coop fees are an extremely bad value at upwards of $600/month. Independent audit has revealed 'accounting irregularities.' If you manage to sell, financing options are limited to one or two banks, and selling requires approval from the board. You'll find the 'smart money' is selling off their units. The building is overstaffed, the doormen ranged from inappropriately flirtatious to unintelligible to downright rude. Allegedly, a repairman was fired for harassment of female tenants upon gaining entry to their apartments. Another housekeeper hovers in the gym regularly, ogling females while talking on his cell phone. As rents have skyrocketed in the area, density has increased, bringing with it issues like bed bug infestation, vermin including mice and roaches. Fortunately, the building provided free sticky pads to catch them, but this is a no-cats building. Hallways often have intense, sometimes unbearable odors of cigar, cigarette or marijuana smoke, and a host of world cuisine that kills all hunger. The building has had its share of police calls and incidents, including a burglar who would search the building for unlocked doors. This occurred after installation of cameras and expensive security service. One of the city's largest concentrations of homeless and vagrants is just 1.5 blocks west, and reveling students scream in the alleyways and hallways at all hours. Laundry fees are almost $2.00 and have increased at an incredible rate. On the bright side, you may still be able to get free sticky vermin traps from the front desk.

Mr. Shaw was given $4,000 for personal reasons/eviction of home etc and did not pay me back. When DCHA, Corp was contacted, aside from the $4,000 garnishment that I am receiving is aware of his theft, lies, unprofessionalism etc and continues to be an employee even though management is aware of his unlawful, deceitful acts. Terri Letwinsky In addition to giving DCHA/his employment as a reference for independent contracting jobs, he is on multiple dating sites looking for women who are also interested in independent contracting jobs including painting and dry wall jobs etc..., women he will then steal money from and consequently block any contact with, hoping to evade consequences for his behavior, Will ask for money upfront, not complete the job , nor return the money paid upfront. Am getting ready to file a 2nd lawsuit for uncompleted work, not returning money paid upfront , will block you when you attempt to speak with him , change his phone number and will do everything in his power to evade you. Mr Shaw has changed his phone number three times in the 18 months I have known him, evading creditors, such as myself. DCHA is also aware of this behavior and he remains a current employee. I will attempt to contact DCHA corp to have him served and or arrested for unprofessional, unethical and illegal practices for a second time , that they, Ms R Joseph, COO is aware of. UNACCEPTABLE Terri Letwinsky Do not have/conduct ANY business with this contractor, Christopher Emerson SHaw.

However, when I arrived to the unit with my son and his friend to celebrate his 12th birthday weekend, I was shocked that the unit they put me in was NOT the same unit. The unit that I was placed in was significantly smaller in the living spaces and only had 1 bathroom instead of 2 in the original listing. When I contacted the owner, the response was essentially "Oh yeah, there was an issue with the other unit, enjoy this one instead." Despite the back and forth we'd been having earlier, they never once indicated any issues with the unit I had booked and they never actually updated or modified my booking to reflect the lower price or reality. The unit that I did stay in still shows up on Airbnb as 'never booked' but based on the dirtiness, I find that hard to believe and it makes me wonder if there is a scam at play. They gave me $98.99 refund --after I made a stink--which did not even cover the cost differential between the two listed locations and certainly did not compensate or make up for their blatant dishonesty. I would be VERY CAUTIOUS before renting any unit from this host/owner.

The building is safe, in a great location (right next to shopping, restaurants, etc., and a 7 min drive from the metro station), and has a well-equipped, clean gym. There's also a running trail nearby. I live overseas and return to the US each year on home leave, and I always stay here. Now I wouldn't go anywhere else! Thank you Kay and Teddy for a perfect stay again, and I look forward to seeing you next year. :)
