It's actually one of my favorite places I've ever been to in my life. Being on the island is probably the romanticized Ireland that we all imagine. So just visualize, green hilly fields, views of the ocean, thick "cable knit" sweaters, a Leprechaun House, a bit of mist, a bit of sun and nice smiley people. We booked the b & b through the tourism office in Galway. To get to the island you need to take a bus in Galway to a ferry for a short ride out to the island. When you arrive there are small caravan cars that can take you where you need to go. It cost a few euros per person to take us to the bed and breakfast (b & b). Once we got there we found out that you can pay extra for dinner, which was salmon that night. I'd suggest having dinner there since there is only a pub across the street, which might not be open. Or if the weather is good, you could walk back to town for more choices. The breakfast was typical Irish: bread, jam, bacon, sausage, oatmeal, eggs, potatoes, tea, etc. Our room in the house had a full bathroom, a queen size bed, and balcony. The furniture in the house was homey and cozy, just like being in a friend's house. The island is only 8 miles long, perfect for walking or riding bikes. Unfortunately, the day we got there it was like a hurricane. We spent the afternoon and night in the bed and breakfast watching the wind. The weather cleared up the next day and we walked to Dún Aonghasa, a prehistoric fort. Truly amazing views. We got so taken away by the island that we got back later than expected and missed the last caravan to town to catch the ferry back to Galway. Fortunately, the owners are really nice people, the husband gave us a ride to town and told us about the island and how he and his wife started the b & b. IMPORTANT: The bank on the island is only open one day a week for a limited number of hours, I think Wednesday, so get some cash before going out there. My only regret, is that we didn't spend more time here. But that means I'll just have to go back! I'll upload pictures as soon Yelp lets me.

I am so glad that we decided to still go although it was not included in our game plan. This island was beautiful! I recommend renting a bike and biking the entire island and visiting all of the historic sites. We did not have a bed and breakfast booked or had any idea of where to dine and enjoy some Guinness. I am so happy to have found tigh ruari! The owners were extremely friendly and accomodating. Although there were no other tourists, the hosts at Tigh Ruari went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. The food the cooked was delicious; I had fish and my husband had baby back ribs. They poured a great Guinness and we had lovely conversations. The rooms were nothing special; but they were clean and comfortable. I am so happy to have found this B and B and spent my evening drinking, eating and having great conversation here.

Chock full of fish, mussels, calamari, shrimp, crab, scallops in a delightfully rich, creamy potato, bacon, leek base. The Irish stew was phenomenal. Peppery, smooth blend of mutton, potatoes, onion, carrots, and general deliciousness. Their brown bread is superb. The burger was flavorful, and juicy. The desserts: chocolate cake is wonderful, rich and velvety. The catch of the day is also amazing, especially when it's salmon and dill sauce. And her brown bread was the best we had in Ireland. I wish I could have some right now. The location is perfect for Galway, just a two minute walk over the bridge to the center of town. It has all the benefits of being right in the city, like walking to the pubs and shops and easy access to all the city's sights, but since it's just over the bridge, it's quiet too... and we were there on Friday and Saturday nights. From the small back deck you can look over this town all the way to the high cliffs that drop into the ocean, creating picturesque views of the orange, red and pink sunset. We arrived to a small sign personally welcoming us. Niall and Darra treated us like family while we stayed at their house and even dined at their table. They were personally acquainted with the entire area and gave us honest recommendations for spending our days there. We were able to see the Cliffs without crowds because of their directions. We then had the perfect dinner of local food at Roadford House where we walked along stonewalls past cows, horses, and sheep to the intimate dining room overlooking pastures. We ended the night by enjoying local music at O'Connor's Pub just a minute walk from the Sea View. We would highly recommend staying at the Sea View for at least a few nights on your trip to Ireland. The bnb itself is absolutely beautiful and very cozy. All the rooms come with their own ensuite bathroom and everything in the room itself is quite updated with little modern conveniences (she even included an outlet converter in case we needed another or if someone forgot theirs which was especially handy). She welcomed us with drinks (fantastic bailey's coffee for me, and a beer for my beau) and breakfast the next day was just fantastic -- I would recommend the smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, but the omelette looks very delicious as well. If I made a list of my favorite home-away-from-home comforts, Heron's Rest would cater to just…read moreabout every one. First, this charming boutique B&B is steps away from Quay Street--no need for a car or taxi. There are too many great restaurants and bars so close by that it's a shame I couldn't visit them all. It's also in walking distance to the bus stop that takes you to the Aran Island ferries. Sorcha Malloy, the owner and hostess has an eye for creating clean, cozy, minimalist spaces in the historic buildings that make up the Heron's Rest. Rooms are outfitted with down pillows, crisp sheets, and comfy white duvets with splashes of color from a vintage table cloth or Indian silk throw. Coffee and tea are provided, as is a rockin' crystal decanter of port for a pre-bedtime nip. The view from every room is gorgeous--swans, fishing boats, and the B&B's namesake (Arthur the Heron) float in the Galway Bay just a few feet away from your window. Rooms are stocked with robes, slippers, hair dryers, and a TV (I didn't watch the tube but noticed it was small--if TV is important to you when you travel, this place might not be for you). The bathrooms are stocked with natural bath products. Bathrooms have been renovated and are modern; showers have plenty of hot water. The two single rooms share a bath but Sorcha had plans to renovate that floor making one large room with private bath. All other rooms have their own bath. I saved the best for last--breakfast. Sorcha is a trained chef and the breakfasts were some of the best meals we had in Ireland. We started with a cheese tray featuring local cheeses, honey, and spreads. There were homemade savory scones and red currant & lemon muffins to die for. Each guest received a pot of freshly-made espresso (or tea) and a pitcher of steamed milk. Then Sorcha brought out freshly-squeezed OJ and an incredible fruit bowl with seasonal fruit (ours had kiwi, watermelon, blackberries, red currants, pomegranate seeds, strawberries--I could go on...). Local yogurt and flax were offered, too. And those were just our starters--next we chose between breakfast burritos with avocado and homemade salsa, local salmon-topped eggs Benedict, banana pancakes with creme fraiche, and a few other creatively inspired breakfast treats. Needless to say, breakfast carried us through each day until cocktail hour around 4:00. Prices were reasonable, especially given the gourmet food we were treated to. My friend and I paid $90 USD a night for private single rooms and we shared a bath. Our other friend splurged, wanting a double room with private bath, and paid around $180 (it would have been $100 a person for two people sharing). There was also free wireless throughout the inn. Finally, there are a few things I should note that didn't bother me but might bother some. Like I mentioned, don't expect high-def TV with cable; the inn is in the heart of Galway so some might find the streets a little loud (my white noise app blocked it all); and the rooms I saw were small based on what Americans are used to. Do yourself a favor and skip Galway chains like Jury's Inn or the Radisson and experience the charming Heron's Rest Inn!
