this was my first time here, my boyfriend and i were playing with our dog by the water and i walked in with a bathing suit top and shorts, nothing too crazy. before i was welcomed in, the older lady immediately goes "this is a restaurant, you need to have a shirt on." I was taken back by the attitude and delivery as it's not a restaurant but a GENERAL STORE. So i said back, "looks more like a store" and she goes "EXCUSE ME??? thought i heard something." i was baffled. i couldn't help but laugh because of the audacity. I should've just walked out right there and taken my service elsewhere because for the mediocre sandwiches we got and spent over $20 for, wasn't worth it at allllllll. The apple crisp and pear preserves were delicious. However the zucchini potato soup and the minestrone soup has so much pepper in it that it was all I could taste and it burned my mouth and lips otherwise the minestrone would have been probably pretty good . read more

I bought milk here here for 4.5 months. Until I started being allergic to the milk. We called ahead and told them we didn't want to order milk this week and will not be ordering milk anymore we are taking a break from it. They replied that they hadn't ordered the milk yet, which they do on Fridays, so we called just in time to cancel. We call next friday just to make sure sure everything is fine, and they tell us that they ordered us 5 more milk gallons. Now we have to pay for 5 gallons even though we don't even plan on picking it up or drinking it... I will update if anything else changes. read more

We were at the park across the street and my nephew fell HARD on the slide. It immediately swelled. We headed to Cj's and she took care of us like family. A free ice pack and some kind words. We were extremely appreciative. We came back for some delicious ice cream and sat and played tic tac toe. This store is open year round. We will definitely be coming back. Thank you Cj's! read more

A step back in time - about 40 years. Cute little market with intelligent choices for what they carry - just about anything you could need at the amazing Evergreen park across the street but forgot at home. They also run a ice cream and deli tucked into a small little corner. I haven't tried the ice cream yet, but the sandwiches were pretty dang good. Imagine if you had time to make yourself an amazing sandwich at home - that's what you get here. Also of note, the store seems to carry a lot of locally produced items - the ice cream is made locally, they carried Hummingbird sodas made in Silverdale, and signs show that they sell whole local milk on a weekly basis. Docked one star for price/value on the sandwiches, and the speed at which they were made, but it's really worth checking out. read more

With people looking to eat local food from local small businesses it can be a bit difficult to find those diamonds out there. CJ's is one of those diamonds. The store itself carries a variety of general store items but what really makes them stand out are the amazing selection of quality, healthful foods cooked with love and frozen for your convenience. There is fresh food including sandwiches and soups but when it comes to "what am I going to have for dinner tonight" it is the freezer case that shines. I have enjoyed the enchiladas, the Moroccan meatballs and the myriad of soups. It was the Senegalese soup this eve with chicken quesadillas that I made. What a wonderful dinner on a cold, frosty night. Another item they carry is their roast carrot and fennel hummus. It isn't always in stock because it is in high demand but there is a reason for that. If you like hummus, you will love this creation that goes as well with breakfast as it does for dinner. We will all have better lives if we take care of ourselves and our neighbors and finding the local foodie geniuses who are out there plying their trade for the benefit of all makes life a lot more enjoyable! read more

I am reviewing an experience from possibly as long as a year ago, so things may have improved since. Based on what I have read here, though, I doubt it! I felt inclined to share my experience. Maybe the owner will get a clue from so many complaints about service. I grant one star because I have to. Let's say that star is for the fact that they carry local milk and other farm products. The store felt dirty, but that may have been the dim lighting between aisles. It did feel crowded and was uncomfortable to navigate. (I suspect they could stand to carry less processed 'food' on their shelves, especially if much of it expired years ago as some reviewers have indicated.) We had to hunt for the milk we were after because the refrigerator where it was kept was unlabeled and unlit. We would have asked, but the employee at the counter seemed unsociable. I think she is the heavyset, dark-haired woman mentioned in a previous review. She did NOT greet us when we entered the shop, and barely grunted at us when we went up with our purchase. She seemed impatient, and acted like we were intruding. I wondered if I was being sensitive due to anxiety, but my easygoing partner also thought the woman behaved badly. This was our first time visiting the store. Based on other reviewers' experiences, I tremble to imagine how that woman might have behaved if we had done anything more to draw attention to ourselves. I almost wish we had a dog so we could politely ask the employees about bringing it inside the store, just to measure the reaction. Being shouted at doesn't seem very inviting, though! Anyway, we experienced indirect rudeness at worst, but certainly not the level of customer service one expects from a store that purports to be an old-timey neighbourhood hub. It was overall a very unpleasant experience, and we have not returned. It is a shame that CJ's Evergreen General Store represents itself so differently online than it does in person. Oh, also, I sent them an email inquiring about a product, and they never responded. Classy. This means I would have to call (horror!) or go in person to deal with their sullen employees. I say thee NAY. We have been going to Abundantly Green for our local goods, and we are extremely pleased with the service and quality there! read more

A wonderful "corner grocery" across the street from Bremerton's Evergreen Park. Very handy for summer ice cream cones. Good espresso-stop. Very down-home old-timy mood to the place. Although the groceries per se are not stocked in depth and it's not quite a "general" corner grocer for all your quick-stop needs beyond the most sought milk or eggs, much of what it carries is unusual and often very great: a variety of regional/local food products, home-made frozen meals, freshly-made ready-to-eat food items and sandwiches made to order. The place has changed owners a couple of times over the years, but the women running it now seem truly on top of things. If they ever sell off the place and move on they'll be missed. read more

Came to the new park across the street to enjoy a day with family and friends. When we decided we wanted to check out the general store for ice cream, we asked the girls behind the counter if it was OK to bring our pup (golden retriever) in the store. A simple "no, [insert logical reason here]" or "sorry, no" or even a "nope" would have sufficed, instead they took it upon themselves to be very rude. "Absolutely not and that is NOT a puppy." I will never support or recommend any business, local or not, if this is how they treat customers. Don't waste your time with this rundown place, they don't want Bremerton' s business. read more

The ladies working there (owners? I'm not sure) definitely always seemed on the uptight/standoffish side pretty much every time I'd go in there. And they'd always have some odd choice of person working as the ice cream scooper (unfriendly, or really slow moving, etc). As you can imagine this being a convenience store and all, the prices leave a LOT to be desired. But they do have cheap/really good ice cream which is the only reason my gf & I would come here in the past. And the cute little outdoor seating facing the park across the street really helps. Overall we were happy to have CJ's only a couple blocks away when we lived in Bremerton. read more

CJ's is a quaint local store that has things you don't find everywhere. They have the best pies!! We recently won one of their pies at a dessert auction. It was all we could do to not finish it in one sitting. It was a deep dish berry pie with an amazing crust. They are the berry best!! Not just for pies, but ice cream, to go frozen meals! read more

The owner is so friendly! They make your egg salad and tuna to order like all of the other sandwiches, whatever you want in it they add it in right there. This store is absolutely delightful! Full of really quality local products, they serve espresso drinks, ice cream cones, operate a Boar's Head deli, have a fabulous catering menu, and have all the little incidentals a person using the park, playground, public boat launch, or just living in the neighborhood might need. Amazing pot pie! We just happened to drop in when visiting the park and are so glad we did. They had a wonderful variety of local products and fresh prepped goods. We left with one of CJ's turkey pot pies and a couple slices of dessert pies. We were not disappointed. Definitely headed back for more pot pie and to try out their other take-home treats. read more

An excellent place that I'm embarassed that I don't go to more. It's stocked well with lots of things you wouldn't expect for a business it's size. The premade meals are amazing and worth your time if your in a rush to make something at home. Good food as well. Had a hummus wrap there a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I also really like that it has a hitch for my dog with a waterbowl that way I can go inside. There's really nothing to dislike about it. Worth your time if you are ever in Evergreen park. read more

Terrible experience...today the dark haired heavy set woman who works there was absolutely rude to me for the third time. I nicely asked if I could carry my Chihuahua in to make a purchase and she proceeded to be loud and almost yell that he wasn't a service dog. If she would have been nice and just said it that would have been fine. I only asked I had been allowed to bring him in before. I try to support this local business even though half of the food on the shelves is past expiration and I'm treated terribly everytime I come in and this woman is working. I've watched this business slowly go down hill and it's sad to me. It started out as a little gem and went downhill. I bought a jar of queso dip one day when we were at the park and it was 3 years out of date. It a store of that size, that's absolutely uncalled for. I really hope the owner sees that this woman is terrible for her business and some changes are made. read more

This was our first and definitely last time visiting the store. My friend and I decided to get ice cream for ourselves and for the kids. At the store, we had to "pre-pay" first at the counter before we can get an icecream. The lady on the counter was not welcoming. She didn't even say "hi" or "what can I get you?". She just stared at me and I just went ahead and ordered. She then asked, "what size!?" In a very rude way. She made us feel that we are not from that community. After getting our icecream, we decided to sit down on the chairs inside the store. My 2 y/o was standing on the chair next to me, and this same lady said, "we have a booster chair for her" then I said "its ok, my daughter climbs out on those". She then shouted at me "Well, you have to have her sit down!!!". My friend and I thought that was very rude. I didn't like that she shouted at me in front of my friend and the kids. My toddler likes to sit on my lap, Im a mom and sometimes I feel tired and even when I put my daughter on a different chair, she likes to stand up and explore. I grew up in the neighborhood of this store back in the 60's! Although it's a much cooler store now, it's very nostalgic for me to go there and to Evergreen Park. My family picked up sandwiches there this week to eat at the park. The sandwiches were delicious. They were pretty busy when we arrived and more people kept coming in, but the 2 gals working at 530pm did very well, getting orders rang up and out the door. Next time I want to try their licorice ice cream. Yum, sounds good! read more

Husband & I are always on the lookout for healthy tasty eats, preferably locally grown. Plant based diet can be a challenge when on the go but Richard has been a great help in cooking up grab and go meal items to be found in CJ's freezer. When we have more time we enjoy sitting outside with our two greyhounds and observing the goings on in park. For those with grand-kids.... CJ's is on our "must do list" when grand-kids are in town. I've been going to this store off and on for years. Stopping in here and there. Although it's a cute little store-The brunette that owns or runs the store is about as friendly as a Winter Blizzard and because there is so much to look at if you catch her glance while walking about the store she gives you the feeling that you are out to steal from her. One day last week I went in for an ice cream cone and went to the counter to pay for it before I ordered the cone, I pulled out my Atm card and she said do you want to buy anything else and I politely said no and she said there is a $5.00 limit on credit cards, instantly I said Oh this is my debit and she looked at me (no smile, no personality) and said "as I stated there is a $5.00 limit on purchase with a card. I said Oh, Ok well Thank-you and got into my car and drove down to Cold Stone Creamery who were more than happy to take my Debit card. I won't be doing business with them again just because of the way they treat you from the minute you walk in the door. Alot to be said for Customer Service these days--or lack of it!!! read more
