The diversity of equipment is terrific and allows me to focus on whatever my current goal may be, whether it is cardio, high intensity interval training, working a bag, or lifting free weights. The staff is always willing to provide insight or instruction and the premises are clean and meticulously kept. Every corner of the gym exhibits pride of ownership. I've worked out during all times of day and never found it crowded. In addition, Calhoon's has worked with me to facilitate family guest admission while visiting. The YMCA is one of the only gyms in town, so most people work out there. They seem to charge A LOT for what you're getting, but they can get away with it since there aren't any other viable options. I was charged $25 for 5 days into the next month before I moved and they wouldn't just let me use the facility for those few days. I was originally charge $15/month with my student discount, so that was inconsistent. I got the deluxe membership with the steam room, locker, etc. It was nice, but the women's locker room is very rudimentary and dismal in appearance for what you're paying. While I had the deluxe membership, a staff member confronted me asking if I was paying for it and it felt like he was accusing me of sneaking in there which left a bad taste in my mouth. The worst part is the hours. This place is only open during the day, very limited weekend hours, closed Sunday's and holiday and closes pretty early in the evening. I think the YMCA is nice for older adults who are retired, but if you're busy and trying to lift in a nice facility with new equipment, try to find a better option....which will be hard in Walla Walla.

Nice park even when the parking lot is closed for the winter…read more I use the park as the starting point or a turnaround point of a walk along Mill Creek or a walk from here to Bennington Reservoir (lake). As the turnaround point, leaving the car at WWCC ball park and walking up to Rooks puts the cold breeze at your back on the way back down. If you leave your car outside the locked gates in the winter months at the park, you can just walk in and take a hike up to Bennington or walk down to WWCC or even further into Walla Walla along the trail. I like the last part of my hike or walk to always be the downhill part. In the summer, this can be a nice place for a family gathering, a picnic (tables available or barbeque pits), or a little activity. However, check for ticks in the spring and summer months especially if your wanderings take you out among the flora and fauna.

This park has character as it is close to the city but is quite rustic…read more It has all the usual accoutrements of a park--kid play area, bathrooms, grass, picnic areas, barbecue pits, horseshoes, tables, a dam, a bridge, a creek, a stream, some great trees and lots of parking. OK, so most parks don't have a dam and a bridge, but some do, right? It is attached to Walla Walla by the Mill Creek Recreation Trail which is over a mile long and is perfect for a daily walk as it runs alongside Mill Creek. It is next to the Bennington Lake Recreation Area which increases your options for entertainment. Dogs are welcome at Rooks Park but should be on a leash. Horses are also welcome, but they cannot use the bridge. The parking lot is closed for most of the winter so you may have to park outside the gates if you arrive at an out-of-season time.

This is the oldest city park in Walla Walla, but don't mistake that for being boring. There is so…read moremuch to do here. There are trails, ponds, and a lot of old-growth trees to relax under. I focused on the aviary. The largest enclosure has white peacocks, doves, ducks, and geese (I'm sure I missed some other birds) all together so you can see how they interact with each other. There are also smaller enclosures with other types of birds too. Some of them are enclosed with a bunch of doves, although I'm not sure if that was intentional or if they are free loaders. I could watch the birds for hours. In the building adjacent to the largest bird enclosure are smaller pens with birds that I'm assuming are being rehabilitated, although I also saw a cat with a collar in with the quails. I hope that the cat doesn't cause chaos...
