As the snow melted I saw a need for some outside help and I have been the volunteer gardener ever since, going 3 times a week, winter and summer. I try to make the outside appealing and give residents beautiful flowers for seven months of the year. In 2016, Sharon, the owner built an amazing "walking" garden, for the residents, with mature spruce trees, gazebos for shade and room for lots of flowers in the patio gardens.This year will add a large grassed area on the south side of the building. More than the gardening, I love the staff and the residents and learning about the ever changing challenges of taking care of our aging population. Selma is my "go to person", always busy with Operational duties, but always finding the time to discuss what we should put in the garden each year.This year we will have a spectacular show of yellow "World Peace" tulips, following on the red and white tulips which celebrated Canada's 150th. In the next few years Ray and I will probably move to a retirement home, but we already have "our special family" to join at Embassy West. The care given to the residents inside is the same standard of loving care that I give to the gardens outside. Long term care facilities get a bad rap, but I actually feel that Revera does a fairly good job…read more We had a loved one live at the Westwood for close to a year. Prior to that he lived at another Revera facility (the Stittsville Villa and Manor), but that one was for independent and supportive living only, so when his needs exceeded their capacity, he was transferred to the Westwood, which provides assisted living and long term care. The Westwood feels slightly less homey and more like an institution than the Stittsville Villa and Manor, but it does not feel "depressing" nor other adjectives that many associate with such facilities. Staff are very pleasant and residents do not seem neglected. Most of our loved one's time at the Westwood was during the Covid-19 Pandemic. They did have an outbreak when he was there, but it was not nearly as bad as at other long term care facilities in Ottawa. I think they handled it quite well. When they were in outbreak, they had residents eating in their rooms, but as the virus got more under control they had residents back in the dining room with good physical distancing measures. During the outbreak they really had strict restrictions on visitors and after the outbreak they still limited visitors and had screening processes. Although they faced some criticism, I feel they did their best with what they had. We were happy with the care he received at the Westwood. He would still be there had he not moved to a hospice for the last days of his life. The Westwood has a family doctor who comes to the residents, which saves residents the trouble of leaving their home to see a family doctor. The Westwood also has a pharmacy and lab on-site. They have a fitness room and a salon on-site as well. There is plenty of free visitors' parking in their 2 private parking lots. I would not hesitate to recommend the Westwood for those at the point in their lives where they require such living arrangements. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank those working at the Westwood and in all long term care facilities, especially those providing the everyday routine care to the residents. I recognize that it's hard work and not glamourous. I commend you and applaud you. Thank you.

Peter Kocoris, the third Executive Director in just over two years, has not, I my opinion, been very good at managing the staff and residents, both of whom have left since his arrival. His motto is MY RESIDENCE, MY RULES, MY CHOICES, MY DECISIONS. so people leave. In my opinion, he truly needs to make his position one which he dedicates himself to the well being of everyone, staff and residents included. His hard line attitude is not conducing to the welfare of others. Not just a select few staff members and a few residents. a case in,point, a resident in her eighties had been sitting at the same dinning room table for over three years. He decided, without telling her, that another resident could sit there and the former resident go sit elsewhere, I defended the resident who was forced to move. He decided to shoot the messenger. Still does. And the bedbugs infestations!

She was there for about 10 years, during which time she was quite content with the care and the food provided. When her medical situation worsened, she went from independent, to assisted living care. Until her passing, we were glad that she was in a 'community' where care was increased as needed. Presently, my husband, who suffered a stroke, is in the same place, and again, I am glad that he is in a place where he is well cared for, and the staff are very attentive to his needs.

The dining room is just off to the side and the residents tell me that the cooking is fantastic. Descend the grand staircase to the lower level, or use the elevator and you will find a health centre, where there are doctors offices, a vast recreation room for organized activities or games at your leisure, the chapel, the library (with a large collection of books for your literary pleasure), a fitness room and a salon. There is also a cafe and bar, for snacks or drinks between meals and a theatre for afternoon movies. With all the amenities, you will never have to leave (or want to)! I have had the pleasure to use space in the manor to hold occasional classes and recitals for my young piano students, much to the delight of those who live here on a full-time basis. They care more about the people than the bottom line. Trying to find the right home for my mom was such a stressful experience. As soon as I met Adriana and the staff at Thorncliffe Place it felt right. MOREOVER, IT WAS VERY AFFORDABLE. Plus, all of the seniors I have spoken to that live there, love it! Mom has since developed a more serious form of Alzheimers and I have never seen such compassion, GREAT NURSING DECISION MAKING and SUPERLATIVE care. They offer all the care she needs there until end of life, so no more moving. My dad and father-in-law were both at different residences and also both had Alzheimers, so I have had experience with the quality of other facilities. The people and the place felt cold and many uncaring. At Thorncliff Place, residents are treated with compassion and kindness. It is the best residence if you like a small family-type atmosphere.
