This places is consistently a good spot. The place itself is pretty small. The usual bartender is friendly and engaging. He's cool with you trying a few beers before getting a full drink. Service was a great clean environment. My bartender was super helpful. They advertised it as being a liquor store and it was around 11:30 pm, not many options. Which the bartender explained. After I bought a generic bottle of wine for $55. I wasted time being nice and buying a cider so as to not be hasty. The time and money I could have went across the street to SUBWAY INN and ate decent burger and a few shots to help me sleep for half the price. Which sucks because when ingot there they had just closed the kitchen except for fried foods. Which over all after the wine cider and tip came to about $75. Wish they had flights, so I could sample more of the beers in the limited time I have in NYC. My family and I visited this bar on 1/27/2024. We had just finished dinner at Tony's Di Napoli and we were looking for a chill spot to have one drink while relaxing and talking. & this bar did not disappoint. The manager, Jose greeted us as soon as we walked in. He assisted us in choosing wine and beer (for myself). With his recommendation, I tasted my first beer from Guatemala called Gallo. As I am someone who has the strange goal in life to never drink the same beer twice this place is a great find. I did not drink anything there and looked around and basically did self service to buy and take home. Someone was helping someone else in the place and the guy behind the bar needed to be called to get away from the soccer game running on the TV. So I cannot comment on the helpfulness of staff. In the end an experience I cannot say I have seen somewhere else in a small neat shop with this being the only thing going on. City Hops is a perfect alternative to the typical neighborhood loud cavernous bar scene where you have to shout to be heard, the smell of well alcohol permeates every surface, and drinks are easily $13+. The vibe here is friendly and low key. You can get a draft on tap or select from one of the seeming thousands of options in the refrigerated cases. For those with gluten issues, there's a whole case devoted to ciders and other gluten free options. They charge a $2 corkage fee for cans and bottles under $7 that are drunk in-house from their coolers, but the final cost is still less than paying for a far more expensive cocktail. Been coming here for a while now during the COVID times to pick up some brews for home. Small shop with a few fridges to the side housing different types of beer by can/bottle. Most of the beers will run around $5-9 per can/bottle depending on type/uniqueness. Some specialty beers are also available at a premium, though I find that it's more affordable than counterparts in the area. Currently they have nothing on tap, nor any indoor seating, but hopefully that will be changing soon. In short, good beer shop for a decent selection of brews. Not every term and wordage is an attack on your heritage or religion. Stop it already. That being said City Hops is a really tiny craft beer shop with some unique brews on tap and in cans / bottles. List of daily tap beers, about 12 or so, on a printed list that range from $6 - $12 depending on the brew. They also have a selection of cold beers in the fridge. A few seats and friendly staff who are happy to explain the selection. Don't expect to get a seat any time soon if you walk in and see a crowd in here. I stood and chatted away with a few others while downing a tasty Pilsner. It's a neat little spot to check out some unique curated craft beers here. Growlers and ciders offered too. The employee that was working was so nice and helpful that she picked out the perfect beer for the wife and I after we described what we liked. Come to the east side and grab some beer. This small bar pretty much have all beers (and reasonable substitutes) that any beer lover would enjoy. Due to its small size, the place feels more like a gathering room, rather than your traditional bar. City Hops is great for spot for a few beverages before heading out to other adventures. Also, it good if you just want to chill and have a few beers. I had great service the few times that I have been to the bar. The bartenders (or rather, the "beertenders", as I like to call them) are very knowledgeable about all things beer. Although City Hops does not serve food, you can place orders from local restaurants to be delivered . . . many people order from the restaurant/pub that is across the street from City Hops. Tiny, chill destination for draft and bottled beers. There are truly fewer than ten places to sit, but plenty of standing room. The selection that is already cold is about half the size of the shelves that aren't chilled, but there's decent coverage across both. I definitely noticed a heavier emphasis on sour and wild ales, but there is definitely something here for everyone. I got the Birthday Bomb stout, which was luscious. The crowd here seems very chill and not particularly straight edge, which is right up my alley. I am glad I got to check this spot out. read more

I remember what I said when I first discovered this place - "Thank Christ". The UES definitely needed a nice craft beer store, and this place does the job nicely. They get special cans from local brewers (check their Instagram regularly), have an excellent variety spanning 16 taps, and now have the option to order food from the Subway Inn across the street (they have solid hot wings). I was randomly in the area yesterday afternoon with one of my best friends when we were attempting a "Macaron Day Crawl". After trying two places (both busts) I discovered this place when I looked up and saw "Miso Hoppy". I laughed because it was punny and then grimaced because it sounded...a tad off... Regardless we went inside after I did my "happy yay craft beer!" dance. The selection here isn't has large as some of the other craft beer stores I frequent, but what they lack in size they make up for in selection. Miso Hoppy has some really interesting beers from some well known (and not-so-well-known) micro and macro breweries. We split a Samuel Smith Taddy Porter, it's a full-bodied English-style porter with big velvety notes and 5% ABV. I also sampled a variety of their on brew drafts. The Kentucky Common Beer they had on tap stood out to me the most. Kentucky Common Beer is a once-popular style of ale from the area in and around Louisville, Kentucky from the 1850s until Prohibition. This particular one was brewed by Greenpoint Beer & Ale Company, is 5.50% ABV and according to Beer Advocate Magazine - was in VERY limited production, only brewed once and has now been returned. It was a nice take on a sour, resulted in a really clean mouthfeel and had a really crisp finish. I'm not often in this neighborhood, but I would definitely return if I am. OH, and as an FYI - beers on tap (drafts and growler fills) are 20% from Wednesdays to Sunday ALL DAY as part of their "HOPPY HOUR" - bwhahahaha, I LOVE puns {3. Also just realized via their Twitter that they just tapped Otter Creek Brew's "Couch Surfer" - this is an oatmeal stout I've never seen on tap anywhere - only bottled. The combination shop and bar specializes in beer - with several craft beers on tap and even more in bottles. If you are looking for a rare beer, it's probably here. The staff is knowledgeable and will help you find exactly what beer you desire. The place gets packed after work, and I can understand why. The place is very low-key and you can bring outside food. Excellent beer shop located in the sutton place neighborhood. I was staying with family in the area over thanksgiving and came here to pick up some beers to enjoy. There are limited options in this area for good craft beer, but City Hops has everything you need! Although small, City Hops packs in some of the best beers in the city. They have about 8 bar stools where you can enjoy some of the drafts they offer while you shop around. Staff is super friendly, great about giving some suggestions. The only compliant is the price on these beers, they totally jack up the cost on everything. I know, its NYC, its the UES, and you can expect some higher prices. It is the only good beer shop in the area, so if you need something, this is where you gotta come, just be prepared to pay a little extra! read more

The bartenders give good advice if you're looking for something new. I used to stop in this place a lot and pick up a cider to have after work but I will never go back there after today. The guy working at the register was a complete dick. After waiting through his phone call and his storytelling and still working his way through one customer, I finally asked in the middle of his story if there was a chance I could quickly pay cash for my drink. He immediately said "no, there's a line and another person in front of you" in a rude tone. As I turned to leave he says in a nasty way "I'm sorry your time is so valuable. There's a hierarchy here." Just the perfect place to go and enjoy the selection of craft beers they have on draft. City Hops is a small place near the Queensboro bridge which makes it a great place to just sit and relax while drinking beer; if it were in a more commercial area, I would think that this place will be overcrowded every time but the two times I've been, it's been just right. The bartender Nick is friendly and helps you on choosing your beer. Overall, this will become a place I will visit frequently. Fantastic selection and they let you do your own thing. I took my leisurely time finding the beers and finally bought. $4-6 per bottle so not cheap but most are pints and lots of double ipa so you're getting 8% and plenty of bang for your buck. About 10 beers on tap and a dozen or so seats at the bar. Small but I could see it getting packed with a few retro games available to keep you entertained. My kind of beer focused bar through and through. Not cheap but you get quality for what you pay for. read more

City Hops is a cool beer shop in the UES. They offer a pretty great beer selection sorted by style, though not as elaborate as Top Hope. Here are my two main complaints. 1. The day that I came, the temperature inside was very, very hot. When this was coupled with a large crowd, most people were cranky and / or miserable. Not a great combination! I'm not sure if their air conditioner went out or what, but I really wanted to dive into the beer selection so I decided to stay. 2. The service on this day was iffy. I was trying to inquire about certain cans and the staff seemed overwhelmed and indifferent. I'm sure this had to do with the heat, though, so I won't hold a grudge. Back to beer.. The tap list and bottle selection was very electric. They had several cans that I couldn't find elsewhere in the city - given that City Hops is a bottle shop, the price wasn't all too expensive either. Nice job, City Hops. I'll come back again..
