It also has a nistory of Nottingham display which we did not see due to a lack of time. Hopefully we'll go back another day to see the rest. The ground floor also houses the Sherwood Forester's Regimental museum (reviewed seperately) The musem is large and spacious and has a coffee shop and gift shop on the ground floor. This is access for the disabled, and all floors have stairs and lift access.

We spent most of our time wondering around the Castle gardens but would like to go back and see some more. It is home to a natural history museum caught in time, i.e. given today's plethora of information and entertainment in the form of TV/cinema documentaries, not really exciting or essential any more. Still, the architectural minutiae, the lovely surrounding deer park and the occasional special events - such as the vintage cars and bikes display when I was there - merit a visit. The architecture of Wollaton Hall is terrific, but the museum inside is quite a bit dated and truly feels like an old style museum trapped in time. Good thing then, that when I visited in early October, there was a congregation of collectors of classic cars and bikes, which added tremendously to the overall excitement. The deer park is as vast as it is attractive. All of these are/were free of charge, and there are several cafés strewn across the grounds. There is also an industrial history museum. Since Nottingham is rather short on attractions (there's Nottingham Castle, and not much beyond that!), Wollaton Hall is the runner-up!

There is a little lane of shops from the 1920's including a chemist, doctors and grocery shop. Also a gallery which shows the history from the local area, not being from Nottingham originally I found this really interesting and insightful. Entry is free to Nottingham residents or £3.50 for an adult if you're not and tickets are valid for a week. Literally a walk down memory lane and a good way to kill a few hours for free. (I think there are also some air raid shelters used in the second world war)

The exhibits focus on Robin Hood, the rebellion of Nottingham's townsfolk, and the struggles they faced under oppression in medieval times. It's incredibly informative and gives fascinating insight into the city's past. One of the most striking parts of the story is how rebels burned the castle down from the inside in 1831, and it was never rebuilt in its original form. Instead, the city transformed it into a museum, which makes it a unique blend of history and culture. Be sure to bring plenty of time--you can easily spend three hours exploring everything. There's also a lovely café and a terrace where you can sit and enjoy the views. Absolutely worth a visit when in Nottingham!

The Regimental museum of the Sherwood Foresters (later the Worcester & Sherwood Forests) is located…read moreon the ground floor of Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery. The regiment was formed from the 45th and 95th Regiments of Foot, and the museum also includes several Militia units which merged with the Regiment. It contains several display cases showing the history, uniforms, medals and other items. It covers the period from the units orgiins at the end of the 17th Century, right up to the present day, with items on display from its tour of duty in Bosnia. There is also a childrens trail, with various items for them to find, including an elusive mouse which moves around the displays! If you have any connection with the army in this area, then I can recommend visiting this museum.

They have a mixture of exhibitions from paintings, sculptures and live performances. The open day was really good, they had various workshops on including belly dancing and henna painting, it was a well attended event. The events/exhibitions are free and its open every day of the week. They've also got a cafe bar where you can grab a coffee or bite to eat (more snack type foods rather than proper meals), all of which are reasonably priced. The outside of the building looks really cosmopolitan and makes this place a delight to visit
