The most exciting thing was the hairy black tarantula that crossed the path. Many dirt roads run through this nature area that mostly stretch north-south with smaller east-west connector trails. Also with multiple trailheads, I chose an 8.6-mile loop with a 1000' elevation change that started at the north end of Las Virgenes Road off the 118 in Calabasas. 0.0 miles: Park on the street and walk north past the aptly named Sulphur Spring (don't know how the nearby apartments handle the smell). Follow this dirt road and stay left. 0.8 miles: Left to go up the Las Virgenes Connector which is not a road but a wide trail. 1.3 miles: Right to Cheeseboro Ridge Trail under electrical lines because this dirt road services a series of power towers. The trail has views of the rocky Baleen Wall on the left. 3.5 miles: Reach highest point with outcropping of boulders with decent view. 4.5 miles: Right at marked sign to go down Sheep Corral Trail - a single track trail not a road. 6.3 miles: Right to the mostly flat Bell Canyon Fire Road at the valley floor with occasional tree shade and many signs warning of the underground high pressure natural gas line. We were among the very few hikers but encountered plenty of mountain bikers. I didn't see anyone with dogs but there was plenty of poop on the trail.

The ride to this trail is beautiful but keep your eyes on the road! Once you get to the trailhead there is street parking. Just don't park on the street between 9-6am. Come early for a good spot near the trailhead! This walk/ hike is relatively short. The hike starts at the gate and from there stay left all the way to the end. You hike will start on a paved area and then transition to a trail. A relatively simple hike with some gradual ups and downs! The views from the trail is absolutely beautiful! Especially when the fog is rolling off the mountains! You can truly get a 360 view! And the very end of the trail you are greeted with a cement platform that has been graffiti! This Takes away from the beauty but interesting its own right! On your way back to your car, if the cloud and the fog has lifted you will be able to see the beautiful ocean from the mountain peaks! If you are seeking a quick simple hike with beautiful 360 views, then this is worth the windy uphill drive!

I brought my umbrella that I keep in my car to protect me from the hot sun. It was only 9am but the sun was already beating down, without my umbrella I wouldn't have lasted. I parked at the Bark Park dog park and initially I couldn't find the trail and almost left. As I was about to drive away there it was at the edge of the dog park right before exiting, so I parked again and went up. The trail is easy to follow and actually not too hard, considering my lack of appropriate hiking shoes I just walked a little slower and watched my steps carefully. The trail is overgrown so these sharp bushes are poking your arms and legs periodically but I really had the urge to move so I kept going. About halfway I scared myself since I was alone so I ended up downloading the app All Trails and immediately I was assured that I was going the right way and that I was at the halfway point. Little did I know this trail Also has a Kobe Bryant memorial. A little further from the halfway point of the trail I thought I saw a pile of trash, but as I got closer I realized it's a small memorial, but it has allot of old bottles and cans it doesn't look so nice. The photos and jersey have faded. I paid my respects and kept walking up the trail to the end. At the end of the Bark Park trail is the Millenium loop trail. I would have kept going on that trail if I had appropriate hiking attire but this is where i decided to turn around and head back. Going back is downhill and relaxing. One thing though is that the entire way back and forth it felt like an animal was following me. I heard something in the bushes to my right behind me and it seemed to always be behind me. I saw lizards, birds, giant flying insects, grasshoppers, etc, but the sound I heard sounded bigger. Maybe I was just scaring myself because I was alone LOL. I didn't see a single person on the trail either. Overall a nice trail that got my heartrate going and some fresh air and scenery. I'm sure it's much more beautiful when everything is green!

I had driven up to the Entrada entrance of TSP with nothing more than a rumor that lilies were blooming in the Santa Monica Mountains, somewhere. This trailhead lies right next to a luxurious housing development, landscaped with 100% non-native and non-drought tolerant plants. (Aargh.) I found parking easily on the street; there is no admission fee at this entrance. The first few steps of the trail are covered with concrete, which itself is covered with graffiti. A typical urban hike. All this climbing is worth it for the gorgeous views, and the fresh air. At the very top I felt exhilarated that I didn't give up! I hope that i can continue exploring and finding new parks and trails to increase my stamina, to then return to this location and test my endurance if I can go faster next time! Wear good hiking shoes with grip because there are loose rocks and narrow areas on the path and you need good grip for both the up and down hill. As a trail run, it…read moreis considered one of the hardest in SoCal, as it is run during the height of the summer season and is completely exposed to the elements. As a hike, I would recommend it during the cooler seasons. The start of this trail is at the Malibu State Park. It is a wide, dirt fire road with few rocks under foot. Less than 3 miles into the loop counterclockwise, you will reach the M*A*S*H site, from a well-known sitcom from years past. It is quite interesting to spend a few minutes browsing the old vehicles and memorabilia. Shortly after, you will begin one of several steep-ish ascents. If you are a seasoned hiker, you will not find the climbs that difficult. However, running up the hills would be a different story... There are multiple ups and downs throughout the loop. At about the half way mark, if not sooner, the scenery really begins to change. Lots of sandstone formations can be seen, which are kind of unique to the Malibu area. Also, on a clear day, there are picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean and beyond. I was pleasantly surprised and intrigued on this hike. I would highly recommend it. Parking - $12 at the lot or free parking about 1/2 mile away off of Las Virgenes Rd

The loops begins at Malibu Creek State Park, which is about a quarter mile south of the intersection at Las Virgenes & the Mulholland Hwy. There's a fee to park in the lot, so if you want to avoid paying the fee, there are 3 dirt lots that you can park for free at the above mentioned intersection. The first two thirds of the loop are on fire roads for the most part. You start out flat for about 3 miles, strolling through deer filled meadow. Then you start going up, gaining about 2,000 ft in elevation over the next 4 miles, finally topping out at the summit at Castro Crest. From here out, the last 7-8 miles of the trail heads due east, consists of a rolling hills, descending in elevation before you make your way down and back to the trailhead. The cool stuff - You get some decent views of the Agoura Hills/Thousand Oaks to the north and some hillside mansions and ocean views to the south. The sandstone rock formations that dot the hills are quite impressive. Saw a ton of wildlife, including deer, hawks, and on a hot day, I'm sure the snakes come out. The uncool stuff - The hike consists of mostly fire roads. Never been a big fan of them, mainly because there is not shade and you are fully exposed to the sun the majority of the time. Even on the cloudy, overcast filled day, I still managed to get a little color. Shade is far and few between, so make sure to bring enough sunscreen. Overall, great for hiking, trail running, horses and especially mountain biking, with plenty of room on the fire roads to maneuver. Total loop mileage is about 15.5 miles.
