Jordan used to get her hair done here, and you can see why. One of things I like about Brighton is…read morethat it has many different sides to it, and Stage One encapsulates the trashy, fake hair and nails West Street side of Brighton - but in nice way. The owner/senior stylist is a guy called Neil, and he is a bit of an oddity, because he really isn't what you think of when you think of 'Brighton hairdresser'. He is a bit of a geezer, and - sorry Neil if you are reading this - his outfits are - ah - not exactly the kind of carefully-put-together angular hair cut/tight-black-top/scarf ensembles that are more familiar male hair stylist ground. He is more likely to be found wearing double denim. Unironically. He lords it over a bevvy of the ditziest, dippiest juniors I have ever seen. I've never seen one of them let loose on the scissors, in spite of the fact that I went in there on and off for a couple of years. The range of services available also reflect the clientèle that they serve, being one of the places in the area that do hair extensions. I had my hair permed there a few years ago, and they did a good job, although Neil would always try and style my hair with a very 80s wet-look wave after cutting it. The true value of the cut would only be revealed after I went home and washed my hair of the vintage Baywatch look. Altogether the salon has an unpretentious atmosphere, and they offer a wider range of services than a lot of salons in the area. Prices are moderate.

If you aren't too fussed about the 'salon experience' and just fancy a quick, efficient, good value…read morehaircut, then Peewees is great. The only times I've been there are when I've been out, caught a glimpse of myself in a shop window and thought: Damn, I need a haircut! Then, I've turned into Kensington Gardens to miraculously find a sign proclaiming: 'Cancellation Appointments Available Now'. I've had my hair cut at Peewees three times and never had a bad experience, although several friends of mine say they have. It may be that the salon is a bit hit-and-miss and I've been lucky, or it may be that the mates in question are just too fussy about their hair. In fairness, this salon doesn't have the 'wow' factor of Electric, but I've always got what I've asked for (and, in my opinion, what I've paid for). At £27 for the cheapest cut and style it isn't going to break the bank, but you probably aren't going to be blown away either, and if you sign up to their mailing list they do have some great offers that come up regularly, like cut-price colour treatments. They also offer a 50% student discount on Mondays, making it excellent value. All in all, this is at the better end of Brighton hairdressers, and clearly in a great location for passing trade.

I used to get my fringe cut at the Peewees in the London Rd before it closed, and they always did a…read moregood job. This led me to believe that I could probably get a decent haircut with them. So, I booked myself in for a cut and blow-dry at the Kensington Gardens branch and dutifully turned up on time, on the designated day. Well. Nothing about my experience was straightforward or particularly pleasant. I arrived to find that the receptionist had scheduled my appointment during a staff training session, which resulted in me waiting 25 minutes before I was attended to. This diary mix-up also meant that they were over-booked and there wasn't any room in the downstairs of the salon, so I was shunted up the stairs to a half-decorated shabby room, which drained any remaining confidence in the fact that I would be receiving a good hair cut. Seriously, it looked like the perfect setting for an under-qualified teenager to do a botch-job on my hair. I was thinking about bolting, but then my hairdresser presented herself. Let's just say her hair was the last straw...a sort of 90s jelled back affair, I started to sweat as she ran her fingers through my lovely, lovely hair. In fact, she turned out to be really quite sweet. Sadly, this did not make her a competent stylist. She cut off at least 2 inches more than I asked for and I'm not convinced she had ever cut layers before. To top things off, I was charged £5 more than the price quoted over the phone...subsequently, I paid £45 for what was essentially an appalling experience. I do know people who claim to have had good cuts at Peewees, but personally I wouldn't risk it.
