You never know what to expect, and this was one where I wasn't deciding to go here, yet I couldn't…read morefind a parking spot for another place around the neighbourhood to get a coffee, and doing a search for coffee (and high ratings) brought me to this awesome spot.
Let's get this out of the way, as Roger, the owner, has heard all the lines before, once you get to the front of this place, it's something really from the past, and something that you will find in Kensington market in Toronto, a real low key shop that somehow just tells you that you will find a surprise inside. Where the energy really comes from is Roger, like a ball of sunlight, this guy just engages you and welcomes you and makes you feel so welcomed, it's hard to explain unless you come here (come here.. is what I say). Inside you will also find things he has collected and put up for show from his own heritage, and other interesting knick-knacks.
And before you know it you realize that he has something that we do not really have much of in Vancouver, and that is Jamaican patty's, plump, big, filling, damn good ones, and a slew of sandwiches on the blackboard behind him. I saw those pocket's of goodness and I almost forgot the original reason I came here, was for the coffee.... we went back and forth about Toronto (he and I used to live there, reliving our younger years) at the same time some good hip-hop tunes were playing in the background.
My wife had a veggie (lentil) patty, and we ordered a jerk chicken sandwich, and he invited us to stay, as there are a few seats in the joint. I will have to come back for the other patties and sandwich's one day, as all the food was great, but really the star is the boss here, even on this grey cloudy day, really made our day and I hope to just chat up with him again when I am around here.
This is a total gem, check it out.
