The staff here have always been nice and welcoming as well as efficient . I have never ever seen them be rude to anyone And they make you feel comfortable- Like they trust you . They don't make you feel like a lot of small convenience stores do- like they are following watching over your shoulder. I have a 5 year old daughter that can be a bit hyper, running through the isles but they have never given me. a dirty look or made me feel unwelcome which I appreciate: they truly are a "community" store where they treat everyone with respect. okay so i've been going here FOREVER and it's always been my favourite place with the best employees. BUT for the past year or so the food has been CRAZY expensive like unreasonably expensive. It kind of sucks because like i can understand how imported food are expensive, but now they charge regular Canadian foods at crazy high prices and it's super unfair. Ali has upped his service ninja game yet again but I hesitate to say why, in the fear that an unsavory person may read this and take advantage of such awesome. And so, I begin this review with a disclaimer: Are you a good person? Have you ever thought of kicking a puppy? Or taking candy from small, adorable children? Do you own a big van and spend your Saturday afternoons lurking? Or do you, or have you ever had a large mustache that you twirl ominously while partaking in activities like tying damsels onto railroad tracks? If you've answered no to the above, we can safely assume you are a good human. Please read on. In preparation of a big move, my overwhelming need to procrastinate by walking for craft soda has expanded exponentially. So tonight, like many other nights, I made the 15 minute trek to Hasty for my root beer fix. Upon reaching my favourite little neighbourhood store, and loading up on various craft beverages, I realized I had forgot my wallet. Now sure, i'm a regular but Ali didn't blink an eye. With a quick flick on the register, he took my name, told me my total and said I could pay next time I was in. It was done with the ease that assures me this is not the first time this kind gesture has been offered. It brought me back to a time where neighbourhod grocers would happily keep tabs or pubs that keep them tucked away until you stumble in the next afternoon. I grew up with this kind of trust and service, but I haven't seen it before in this big ol' city we live in. It's the kind of neighbourly awesome that makes me love this haunt so much. It's weird for me in general to be reviewing a convenience store, however, I have a personal attachment to this store. My parents were the original owners of this store before it sold down the line to numerous owners. I have memories of working there, the old layout is still imprinted in my mind as fresh as the first day. As I was walking home over the weekend from the record store, I decided to pop in for the first time in literally 14 years. I never did before hand 'cause I never used to hang around the hood and then when my dad passed, didn't want to be emotional. I decided to suck it up and walk in and look at the changed layout and what they had to offer. I didn't have any intention of buying anything that day, I just wanted to remember in my own way. I was pleasantly surprised and relived that not only is it in good hands at the moment but the selection has the convenience store staples but a few specialty products as well. The owners are super friendly, just like my dad and his brother were when they owned it back in the day. It took me 10 minutes to decide on a soda pop to drink 'cause other than your usual suspects IE: Spite, Coke, Pepsi, 7-UP etc., they had specialty pops from different parts of the world. They had rare unusual flavors that I would pay up to $4 a bottle elsewhere and here, at reasonable price. I even found my favorite soda pop Zevia and some cool Seattle based sodas (without having to go to Seattle). I am now on a mission to try all the colas before the end of the year. It's awesome to see a convenience store having faith with unique drink products in hopes that the customer ship is there besides banking on the usual varieties. Two words: Vanilla Coke. Oh for 2004, when Vanilla Coke was available everywhere normal coke was sold. Nowadays, you have to make a pilgrimage to Hasty Market on Main for your Vanilla, Cherry, or Diet Cherry Coke. It can't be easy to distinguish yourself as a convenience store merchant, but Hasty Market somehow manages to do so. I find most convenience stories oppressively bright and institutional. Hasty market manages to offer just the right amount of cluttered goods, with options for exotic beverages (see Vanilla Coke mention above) in the coolers along the back wall at not unreasonable prices. And the gentlmen behind the counter are unusually friendly and helpful. When's the last time you saw a convenience store clerk actually get out from behind the counter and show a confused customer where an item is? I never imagined I would write a review for a convenience store on Yelp, but Hasty Market has earned it. read more

Other than the constant fight between whomever decides to change the "H" in "HASTY" to an "N," there's not much to distinguish this from any other 24-hour, independently operated convenience store. The guy behind the counter is always nice enough and if you need a carton of juice or a loaf of bread, etc in the middle of the night, they've got you covered. Year after year, month after month, some clever soul with a bucket of black paint, a paintbrush, and a will to keep tradition alive, changes that H to an N. And it just keeps getting changed back. You would think that after all of this time, after all of these years, Hasty Market would just change its name altogether. But man, I'm glad it hasn't. Every time I pass by I make sure to look -"has it changed? Is the H an N? Is the N back to an H?" 5¢ candies, cans of Coke, over-priced bags of Oreos - it's really just a convenience store... just so happens to have become a pretty special spot in the Vancouver landscape. read more

I really like how they have never bothered to fix the slight typographical touch-up done to their 'HASTY MARKET' sign. With one ingenious stroke of paint, someone has changed an otherwise innocuous store facade to made-you-look NASTY MARKET. I don't know if it's apathy or ingenuity that has led the owners to leave the sign as is, but either way, it deserves a five. read more

I'm doing it, because I actually did a google search to see if anyone else feels that store has something magical about it, it's like entering the Twilight Zone , except nothing weird or creepy happens. Love Love Love these guys, I'd go in there when my B.F and I had a fight just because, I swear, you open that door and it's a different world. Aside from that, their prices are great, they have good quality groceries, not a lot, but organic things that you'd not expect from a corner store. Must be the best convenience store in the universe. The guys here are so nice, they have something calm and lovely around them. They have a bunch of Dutch candy which you can't find anywhere else - so they got me there. Hasty Market has a really good supply of sweet treats for a corner store. In addition to the usual Kit Kats and Coffe Crisp bars, Hasty Market also has a lot of other premium chocolate bars. If it's ice cream that you are in the mood for you'll lots of varieties from Cadbury bars to Ben and Jerry's. They also have all the usual stuff like potato chips, lottery tickets, and cigarettes, but who cares about that. read more

There has to be a Hasty Market in every neighbourhood in the city. This corner store has style though. Your usual junk food candidates emerge on the shelves: Canned goods, chips and nuts, candy bars, chocolate and other items fill the store. It sells flowers, lottery tickets, cigarettes and frozen treats. I wish corner stores here were like in SF. They carry organic products there, gosh darn it. thank goodness for the kind-hearted, polite and friendly fellows that manage service to this very necessary main street 'general store' come hasty mart. mount pleasant grinds to a halt on main street relatively much earlier to any other neighborhood in vancouver with virtually next-to-none other 24 hour business of any kind for access basic food and beverage necessities, first aid supplies or toiletries, infant/toddler essentials, pet food supplies or just stuff like plain old snacks for that late night movie you hadn't planned on...our area is quite lucky and should be grateful for the business and community connected via their "convenience" store!.. ..and these guys got it covered... ...they do a pretty damn good job with their 'type' and better-than-average brand or quality product choices, hands down. you can buy things like incense, non-perishable organics including good coffee, honey, soup, snacks, chocolate, drinks, cookie confections dr.oetker's pizzas...and that was just the organic stuff off the top of my head while otherwise worthwhile to mention staples like hagen daas ice and ben & jerry's ice cream, maple syrup, eggs, (sometimes limes & lemons), organic yogurt and milk, 'alright' cheese (suitable for kids types), household products & wares, a small "dollar store" section with stuff like thumbtacks, craft supplies, envelopes, playing cards etc. the sheer number of beverage fridges and drinks is huge with a fantastic variety of yummy thirst quenchers... ranging from classics like ALL San Pellegrino drinks, more organic choices, local-brewed ice tea drinks, rice/soy beverages, "good" bottled waters...and it goes on an on...coke and pepsi in the middle of the rest. good standard collection of chocolate bars, 5cent candies with comparable stock of organic/fair trade chocolates/confections. even the relatively small section of first aid/bathroom/medicine/toiletries stuff is pretty smart and inclusive of most things you would/could want with choice and "better" brand products at fair par to most competitor's prices... daily coffee (not the greatest, best early morning), newspapers, bus tickets, lottery terminal, ATM... read more

It's all true. I can't call it a convenience store though - IMHO it's a market, and a really great one at that. Amazing selection, brands, organics, literally anything you could need (other than produce) and the prices are reasonable (unlike the 'convenience' store experience). That's all on top of Ali the super-service-ninja/truly great man (as described here by others), and Zahid, one of the nicest/best proprietors on Main, who are always a great pleasure to deal with. Can't say enough about it - but that there were a few more like it around the city. read more

Throughout the day, the Hasty Market on Main (at 16th) is just another corner convenience store. Squeezed between bigger and more eclectic grocery options it fades into the white noise of passing traffic and pedestrian conversation. But come darkness, and especially after midnight, the importance of the Hasty swells and the genius of being open 24 hours emerges. Cigarettes and Cereal. Lentils and Sardines. Gourmet smoothie drinks and Licorice. It is all here, among the organized chaos of a place which appears to transcend the offerings of a 7/11 just on principle. When walking into the local "sev" the lighting promotes an institutionalized sterility which feels as calculated as the food stuffs on offer. Almost like vast teams of market researchers determined the precise purchasing habits of late night shoppers and manipulated the stock (and the consumer?) accordingly. While some might applaud this exercise in efficiency, the novelty of choice and sense of discovery inherent to the Hasty Market mission has its' own merits. They refuse to limit their options to a few late night staples or overcharge customers for their all-day, all-night availability. Maybe the clerks do not bubble over with enthusiasm for every patron, but this place genuinely relishes the services they provide. read more
