We were driving from Denver to Cheyenne with a handful of individuals who have never experienced the phenomenon that is Buc-ee's, so stopping was an absolute certainty. People from the Mid-Atlantic who lack worldliness like to claim that Buc-ee's is just an oversized Wawa or Sheetz. They are entirely wrong. For starters, Buc-ee's explicitly bans 18-wheelers from the property, leaving the grid of well over one hundred fueling positions open entirely to a synchronized ballet of family SUVs. Inside, the scale is borderline psychedelic. There is a literal "Wall of Jerky" and rows of rotating homemade fudge flavors. At the center is the Texas Round Up station, where employees in paper hats yell "Fresh brisket on the board!" before chopping smoked beef with rhythmic, hypnotic violence. I bought the mandatory Beaver Nuggets: puffy, caramel-coated corn snacks resembling mutant Corn Pops that possess the terrifying supernatural ability to vanish from the bag without any conscious human intervention. Then there are the restrooms. They are celebrated on billboards for hundreds of miles, and they live up to the mythology. They are massive, brightly lit, and so impossibly clean that you suspect the laws of biological decay have been suspended by corporate decree. The entire operation functions because the company pays wages well above the highway standard, proving a radical sociological theory: if you compensate people fairly, they will actually take pride in keeping a floor spotless. It is a wildly efficient, beautifully absurd roadside institution. You pull in merely needing regular unleaded, and you leave with a warm chopped brisket sandwich, a bag of sugary corn, and a profound sense of wonder.
