First, note that while its short…read more1-mile distance from downtown might sound very walkable, the sidewalks in fact end about two-thirds of the way there -- meaning that you will complete your walk in the damp grassy verge along the side of "Dixie Highway" as the occasional semi truck rumbles past. Although known here in Bluffton as "the place you can buy beer," it turns out that Kibbes includes a small convenience store section that includes a working deli -- where you can buy a sandwich, order meat that is sliced in front of you, and also choose from a selection of cheeses. The owner is very friendly. But the establishment earns a full five stars from me because of its beer selection -- it would have been easy for a small convenience store in the Midwest to limit its selection to obvious, popular big-name American beers. Instead, I walked out with a six-pack of Smuttynose Winter Ale that I chose from an entire little holiday cart of different premier brews. The refrigerator section continues the theme of a wide variety of good beers, not merely the watery big-name brands. The only downside of the establishment is that they do not sell high-gravity Belgium beers, nor gin or liquor at their normal levels of alcohol. (Instead, they sell "diluted" versions -- I will find out tonight exactly how bad a martini made with diluted gin tastes; wish me luck!) But as this is a defect of Ohio law, and not of Kibbes in particular, I will complain to my new state representative instead of bringing my wrath to bear on this rating. Kibbes appears to be a safe, clean, friendly establishment that is an excellent example of the convenience-store genre, and that I can recommend without reservation.

But we all know you can't buy liquor here-you have to go to Rite Aid for that. Brookys is everything you could want and expect in a gas station/carry out/garage with a drive through and a decent pizza (and other hot menu items). If you're not from the area, getting your pizza at a gas station may sound ridiculous. But trust me, it's worth the experience. And pick it up in the drive through for the full experience. One of three places you can order a pizza in Glandorf, Ohio...that's an economics case study right there.

Since you are on the island, it's awesome to have this store for so many years for convenience downtown, but do expect to pay maybe a dollar more than you would on the mainland. But, I really can't fault them for that. They have a full array of everything you'll need from snacks, cigs, beer, pop and more. You'll have to drive in at least once while you're here, or just walk right up to the cash register if you're on foot.

It looks like this was a car repair shop at one time and then converted as you pull right into the store through a big bay door and they have coolers and their shelves of stuff on each side of your car. Someone walks up to your car and you literally drive through the store until you get to the other end when you reach the register and then they ring you out. They have your typical convenience store stuff but the uniqueness of this place's layout is what earned it the four star rating.
