We were lucky enough to meet Lee, the current owner and a direct descendant of the original founder. He generously shared stories about the store's history, from when it housed the second freezer in North Carolina (the first was in Kinston!) to the days when families rented freezer space because most homes didn't have one. One of the coolest details? The original fireproof cases behind the counter, where customers' monthly account slips were once kept. Lee has even saved some of those old papers--tangible pieces of history you don't often find in a working grocery today. Along with the history, the service was outstanding. Lee was kind and welcoming, and Howie, a young employee, went out of his way to be friendly and helpful. That personal touch makes all the difference. Of course, you can't leave without trying their famous homemade specialties. We picked up some of their pimento cheese, chili and cucumber salad--they were absolutely delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. The store also has a small meat counter and coolers stocked with local favorites. Conrad & Hinkle isn't just a grocery store--it's an experience. For those who live outside of NC and follow my reviews, in NC you have to buy your hard alcohol from a store controlled by the state. You cannot buy things like bourbon or vodka from a grocery store. The pricing is more controlled, but you are at the mercy of the distribution among the ABC stores by the local county distribution centers it seems. Overall it was good, but not great. I will continue my search for a better store.

I didn't recall that there was a bar in the rear and made sure to snap a shot of their weekly board. I'd return to check out some of their events or even just to grab a bottle of wine. I selected a Riesling that did not disappoint and a Cabernet Sauvignon by Jam. I forgot to snap a pick of the Riesling but I'll return to grab it again! I'd say it's a place you could easily overlook but if you did stumble in here, you might find a brew or want to hang out at the bar for a bit. There's more to this place that I'd like to see and look forward to more reasons to visit.
