To say I'm a little pissed is probably an understatement. Apparently Hill Country Rifles bought…read moreNew Braunfels Gun Works and hasn't bothered to update the NBGW website. I trekked down from north Austin today only to find out they're no longer open on Saturdays, despite what the NBGW website says: [url=http://newbraunfelsgunworks.com/228-2]INFORMATION | New Braunfels Gun Works Besides the piss poor experience of burning gas for a useless trip and not keeping things up to date online, it's a clear sign that they simply don't want my business because I work during the week. If they can't post correct business hours I'm certainly not trusting them with a firearms restoration. Oh, and the one guy that was there, working in the weekend? He was very proud that because HCR bought them they could let their front office person go and use HCR's folks instead. I get economics, etc., but bragging about being able to fire someone (lay them off, whatever) is completely tasteless and reinforces my belief that money trumps values with these folks.

I've shot each of the rifles ranging from a 257 Roberts to 300 Weatherby and 338 Winchester Magnum and each one met or exceeded their guarantee. Even the 338 WInchester shot much better than any rifle that powerful has a right to shoot! Matt Bettersworth is the single most knowledgeable person I have ever met regarding rifles. If he tells you something, he's probably right! I can't imagine why anyone would not be very satisfied with their service. Every business has a "bad day" once in awhile where everything goes wrong at once, but I honestly can't imagine HCR not making it right. They are good people with an extremely talented group of gunsmiths.

IME, it is best to get work done after the hunting rush. Wait times get worse the closer you get to fall. Apr through Jul is usually best. I had a pistol Cajunized in the busy season and it took a little over a month. I took one in during mid-Spring, dropped it off at 11, and had it done same day by 4:30. The DA/SA are so much lighter and crisper. I have Cajunized one myself, so I know what is involved. It is surprisingly hard to find gunsmiths with experience Cajunizing, or with CZs in general. I guess it makes sense, they are far less common than Glocks, M&Ps, etc. I have had smiths tell me they do not work on CZs, or they say "we can do that, we'll figure it out," which is not comforting. Each time I came in, the associate at the counter brought me to talk to a gunsmith. He knew the order the parts go back in, that some jobs like the mag release are easier when everything is already apart, and that you have to remove the front sight pin to replace the barrel bushing. The sear cage is a nightmare to get back together, so I'm happy to outsource it. It's clear they do a bunch of them here, so it takes less time than me installing it or a smith doing it for the first time.
