What a great restaurant! Traditional mexican food. Salsa and chips were delicious. Salsa was spicy and fresh. My husband loved the bean dip. The portions are large and the prices are very fair. The enchiladas verde was excellent. Love the fact that they offer "regular" kid food too. There are cheeseburgers and chicken fingers and fries on the menu for the kids. Nice to go out with nobody complaining. My husband got a special. The plate was overflowing. It was a great way to try a few dishes at once. We will definitely be going back our next trip to Capemay. Really disappointing. I believe it's a family run restaurant but they are very understaffed so the service is not good - they forgot to give us silverware, napkins, and water! We waited an hour for our food and I wish I could say it was worth the wait. I don't know how a Mexican place can screw up a fajita but they sure did. I had cheese enchiladas while uncle Chuck had shrimp. Both were outstanding. Great food, great atmosphere and fantastic chips. A nice find.

We go at least once a month this place is awesome. The best white bean soup I have ever had! Guaraches and tamales are amazing as well.

Food was really good but the service needs improvement. We sat down and quickly got chips and salsa and water. Luckily we ordered when the chips were delivered because we didn't see the waiter for 20 minutes. He entered the room several times but never stopped to ask if we needed anything. I finally flagged him down and asked for more water and more chips and salsa. He came back with water and chips, then asked if there was anything else. He seemed surprised when I said I'd like salsa with the chips. By that time the dinner came, which was delicious. Again, had to flag him down to get a doggie bag. Went here with my son last night and had a great meal. Service was good. Food was good and everything tasted fresh, my son had the beef burrito and I had the shrimp and scallop burrito. The guacamole was the best Ive had super fresh and creamy. Our water glasses were kept full and also the free chips. Great filling and inexpensive meal. The is the real deal. It is home made food that has great taste and is authentic. The tortillas were the best I have had on the east coast and the reason is that they are home made. Their salsas are great and pico is excellent. The fish is excellent and chicken has great flavor. The decor is a bit eclectic with the mix of nautical and Mexico. This is basic, good, home cooked Mexican food tempered for a gringo palette. Personally I like more spice and I don't just mean heat, more flavor as well. We found the service to be good. The waiter was polite and came by several times to ask if we needed anything. We were served in a reasonable amount of time considering the food had to be prepared. The food was authentic Mexican and incredible!! We had cheeses enchiladas and a shrimp and garlic dish over rice with tortillas on the side. We eat Mexican food often and know what's good, when it comes to Mexican food. We have eaten here a few times trying different dishes which have all been a 4 or 5 star. read more

We just moved to Cape May and were craving Mexican food so decided to give this place a try over the weekend. They were not too busy when we arrived and we were pleasantly surprised by how delicious the food was - I had the enchiladas verdes and my husband had the fajita burrito (it's smothered in a fantastic sauce). The beans they serve with the meals were awesome, I don't usually eat the beans at Mexican restaurants but my daughter and I polished these off quickly. I'm giving it a solid three-stars because our food took a VERY long time to reach us and our one-year was getting pretty cranky by the time our food reached the table. We were not aware that it was BYOB (but having just moved here we are learning very quickly that we have to find out before we go to a new place) and were disappointed that there were no margaritas to be had. Our waitress spoke limited English and wasn't very attentive, she never offered a refill on our chips and there was a table nearby that arrived and ordered long after we did that received their food before us (a kitchen mix-up perhaps?). The food is great and the prices are very reasonable but the kitchen and service are slow. Will probably reserve this for a winter go-to when things slow down because it is very close by and convenient for us. read more

Wow- what a great meal! My husband and I were staying in Cape May for a little vacation during off peak season. Many restaurants were closed, but we luckily happened upon this gem. If you are a fan of authentic mexican cuisine, you will love this place. The bean dip is excellent, and vegetarian to boot! My husband had the combo plate which was chock full of delicious mexican items such as; flautas, steak tacos, enchiladas, queso fresco, guacamole, and carne asasda. I ordered the shrimp in a spicy chile sauce. The server was friendly and helpful. If you are a fan of mexican cuisine and happen to be in cape may head on over. unfortunately Mexican options are fairly limited in cape may, so I was really hoping this place would be good. I was disappointed to say the least. despite the tiny and confusing parking lot being almost full there was only one other table in the restaurant. our waitress/hostess stood a the register most of the time on her phone while two of the other staff sat at another table and talked the whole time we were there. also in the traditional mexican resturant fashion there is a tv playing telemundo. the tostadas i ordered were nothing special, mostly bland and the chicken was dry. for what I got I would also say this place is a bit over priced. read more

On vacation in Cape May we felt like Mexican although we were worried about the reviews that gave them poor service. They must have read these and fixed the issues because we had excellent service. A waitress came immediately with chips and salsa and our food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering. I had the chicken mole which was rich and tasty. My wife and son had the Tilapia in garlic/butter sauce which was very nice, too. My other kids had chicken tenders and wings and they were great. Having a kids menu full of standards was a big plus as was BYOB. I rather liked the kitchy boat chairs and the decor but your milage may vary. read more

I knew what to expect of the decor of this place before I entered because I'd read other reviews. That didn't matter to me. The restaurant definitely needs a lot of updating, chairs, (get rid of tv). What upset me the most is the lack of friendly service. As soon as we walked in the lady looked miserable and she did the whole time we were dining.....even after I complained about there being a piece of plastic in my food! Yes plastic. I ordered the vegetable fajita which came out smelling wonderful. Portions of rice and extras were small but oh well. But, while I was chewing my food mid way through my meal I realized there was a piece of plastic in my mouth. I let the lady know who was not at all apologetic. I understand that there are times when you might find a hair or the odd piece of plastic (possibly from packaging, utensils..whatever) in your food....mistakes happen but because service was bad and on top of that , portions tiny, and then plastic in my mouth the whole experience for me was bad. Food tasted fine....not great but fine/good. The bill was discounted but I really think the owner should train or hire employees who can give better customer service. Was upset today because I had high expectations of this place....maybe that's what the problem is. read more

While there are mixed reviews I have always had a very good meal there. The parking is tight and the boat chair seats are funky for a mexican joint and the service can be slow at times but one would kinda of expect that if your eating at a family run place in any small town in Mexico. Try not to think of it as a New York Mexican place that's spot on in all aspects but rather a mix between Mexico and Cape May, so my advice is if your pretentious and stuffy and can't chill out and can't just go with the flow and enjoy some decent, reasonably priced mexican food just go someplace else. And FYI, if you like fish ask for the whole fish, it comes a couple different ways but it's not on the menu, you have to ask for it, also if you like Mole, their's is pretty damn good. The Wet Burrito is another favorite of mine there. read more

Went to 5 de Mayo for dinner while in Cape May and was shocked at how awful the service was. It took the waitress almost 20 minutes to even acknowledge us. She finally took our order, another 15 minutes later we got the chips and our sodas which were ok. We actually had to ask when our appetizers were coming out. Finally our flautas arrived which were awful, there was absolutely no seasoning on the chicken. We must have waited another 40 minutes or so and finally our entrees arrived (we had to ask if she forgot again!) and to top it all off, 2 other tables that were there after us got there food before us! And finally before she collected our plates, she sent a little girl over to our table with the check without asking if we needed anything else or if we were ready for the check. I live in Cape May and have been wanting to try this spot for a few years and didn't actually do so until last night. I was actually very impressed! It's very casual inside but has kind of a cute look overall. The food was super fresh, flavorful, and seemed authentic to me (I'm by no means an expert on authentic Mexican cuisine). Also, the prices were very reasonable, especially for the area, which is another major plus! Service was very quick, but it wasn't particularly busy at the time. In my opinion, the biggest thing Cape May is lacking is casual, reasonably priced, good restaurants. The town is somewhat extreme in the sense that the options are either "fine dining" or run of the mill pizza joints. I'm very excited that I can now add this restaurant to the small list of restaurants that fit this bill. I will definitely be back and look forward to trying a lot of different items on the menu. read more
